Martin Operative Running For Vancouver Mayor?

Sam Sullivan, Christy Clark’s opponent for the mayoral nomination has accused Paul Martin’s B.C. organizers of interference in city politics, in this Sun piece (that goes out of its way to present Martin’s side and cast doubt on the motives of his critics.);

The charge was echoed by veteran B.C. commentator Gordon Gibson, a Sullivan supporter who said his view wasn’t influenced by his failed bid to get the vacant B.C. Senate seat recently filled by outgoing Mayor Larry Campbell.
Clark is married to Mark Marissen, the senior political organizer and adviser to Martin , who is in Vancouver today for Chinese President s Hu Jintao’s two-day visit.

A spokesman for Martin refused to respond to the rumours being spread by the Sullivan camp that [former Vancouver mayor] Campbell was appointed to make way for Clark’s candidacy.
Scott Reid, Martin’s director of communications, said Campbell’s own track record justifies the decision.
“A Parliament with Larry Campbell is a Parliament where the people of Vancouver have a tireless advocate. Public service is practically his middle name. That’s why he was asked to take a seat in the Senate,” Reid said.

Personally, I think corrupt is practically Scott Reid’s middle name and bullshit probably his first name.

  2. G-G is upset. Will she spill the beans on AdScam Martin? How long did it take G-G to realize/awaken? Two years? Ten years? Thirty years? Shabby treatment by AdScam Martin? Just like all Canadians, except for the Librano$$$. Who is the stupid one if it has taken her that long to come to her senses? Self-pity is it? Poor Addy.>>>>more

Ottawa Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson is planning on writing a memoir of her life and her six years in office, portions of which will deal with what she feels was shabby treatment by the Martin government, according to a source close to Ms. Clarkson.
“She has a lot to say,” the source said yesterday. “Anybody who has been around her, from her staff to her friends to her associates, will know that she does not feel, and has not felt, well-treated in the last two years.”>>>

  3. What’s so surprising?…vampires network and nepotisim is a natural as sucking the public’s blood.
Anyone who has watched/studied Liberal party networking knows there has been a concerted effort in the national party to set up Liberal party activists as municipal Candidates with nominations and funding for the past 35 years…..the federal party/government tie in with the municipal council stacking is the FCM ( Fedration of Canadian Municipalities)….a tax payer funded federal ( so-called) lobby group that essentially facilitates the desemination and implementation of federal liberal public policy through councils to a municipal level in exchange for arranging federal grants. There are Fed funding payoffs for these municipal councils when they openly lend support to Liberal policies or impliment them at a municipal level.
So seeing another federally networked Liberal parachuted into a mayoralty race ( probably funded as well) is no great shock.
BTW Kate: we all know Peter O’Neil’s record as a Liberal party press operative..are we surprised he apologises for their dirty manipulative operations in BC. Frankly I’m surprise he hasn’t taken a run at you yet.

  4. Larry Campbell is a flake, and nobody should be surprised that Christy Clark’s campaign is being run by the feds. There were a few uncomfortable moments for her when her husband’s connections to the feds became apparent after the raid on the BC legislature, the full extent of which is yet to come. There were rumours at the time that the whole mess would eventually be traced to Ottawa. She resigned amid great fanfare about her need to be with her new baby, etc. Suddenly, Larry’s gone to the Senate where he’ll promotoe tent cities for every urban area across the country, and free heroin/alcohol/crack/bud for any and every addict in need of hug therapy. He is an asshole and his appointment is one of the greatest shams I’ve seen since I started following politics. I think folks here might just resent Liberal machinations and make sure she doesn’t get the nod for mayor. It’s worth a novena, as my grandmother used to say.

  5. That is interesting WML, Calgary’s current mayor Dave Bronconnier ran as a federal Liberal (good luck in this town), when that failed he ran for mayor. He also seems to be very well funded.

  6. And now I see that a Manitoba “Conservative” has opted to run for the “Liberals” because he couldn’t abide the “Right Wing” element of Harper’s politics. Please don’t touch my fresh coat of cynicism.

  7. Kakola, who’s switched sides this time? Anybody important, likely to be missed? Good riddance, is more like it.

  8. John Loewen (P.C. Fort Whyte) was one of the first to blow the whistle on Crocus Funds when he was the Tory finance critic. Stewart Murray, the Manitoba PC leader, made Loewen stand down from his comments, apologize and even had to buy some Crocus shares personally. Loewen was of course proved correct earlier this year when all the accounting irregularities were revealed.
Murray never really did a proper mea culpa. I surprised Loewen waited this long.

  9. This is a run for premier of BC. Traditionally the mayorship of Vancouver is the stepping stone to be Premier.
Christy would probably do a good job as mayor. The NDP affiliated party is splintered, has done a horrible job and has put Vancouver on a terrible path. They aren’t even running a mayor and the splinter groups candidate has been a social activist whore for the last 30 years. a vietnam draft dodger, Green would continue Vancouver on its downward spiral. Her competitor in the municipal party Sam Sullivan is lacklustre and has no vision. Once again more of the same. Never thought i’d say it but a Liberal who is Right.
One or two terms until Premier Campbell retires and she slides in. Then the Liberal of Canada have another province. That’s when we should be worried.
In BC, the gulf between Liberal and NDP is pretty great.

  10. Iron Lady, I think my point was that there seems to be too large a number of Liberals masquerading as something else, until they’re ready to make their move. I don’t think that’s by accident. I’m not worried when they hang out with the NDP, because they show their true colours. But “Conservatives” who switch sides shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

  11. I suspect it’s just that they will do anything and say anything and sleep with whatever to get elected – snout in the trough and all that. The best thing to happen to the Tories was Stick Chick’s coming out as a Liberal. It highlighted the inherent whoredom (with sincere apologies to working girls everywhere)rife within the Libs, and the lengths to which Paulie Pimp Martin will go to hold on to power.

  12. The fact that the organizers behind Christy Clark are exactly the same people who took over the BC wing of the federal party is a clear sign that Clark’s run is indeed meant to be part of the Liberal advance on western Canada. Not only will a successful run set Clark up to run for premier in a few years it also provides yet another platform to reward good soliders of the Liberal cause in BC. Sam Sullivan may not be an ideal conservative candidate but he does have reasonably conservative stances on a number of issues and is much better placed to beat the far left Jim Green.

  13. WLM Redux you have good insight. It works that way in our area of the Okanagan. Our Mayor is the Local Liberano nominee for MP. No wonder there is always so much money available for grants to make the future resume look as though they really have done something. Remember also, the poor reception Stephen Harper received at the Canadian Union of Municipalities conference with Larry Campbell leading the pack.”enough” don’t you realize a Liberano will be as right or left as they need to be?When the B.C. Liberals were in opposition they voted for the majority of N.D.P. initiatives.

  14. “This is a run for premier of BC.”
    Yes, it probably is.
“Traditionally the mayorship of Vancouver is the stepping stone to be Premier.”
I wouldn’t say it is traditional – there are two recent Premiers who started as Mayor of Vancouver; Harcourt and Campbell. Other than those two, I can’t think of a Premier going back to the Socred coalition government who had been the Mayor of Vancouver, or even been a City Councillor / Alderman, although Vander Zalm made an unsuccessful run for Mayor.
“Christy would probably do a good job as mayor.”
I doubt it. She is a confrontational windbag and intensely partisan. She will be faced with a minority position on the City council, most of whom will oppose everything she does just on general principal. It would be a difficult spot for a good politician, and I think she will be in well over her head. From personal knowledge of a couple of files she was involved in she commits to decisions without even a cursory understanding of the issues involved or the implications of the direction she is taking, and is then vociferous and inflexible in defending them. She would be a disaster.

  15. Don, RE: John Loewen/Stuart Murray
Your facts are only partially correct. John didn’t go ahead with the accusation at the time because he couldn’t prove anything and everyone at Crocus (and the NDP government) were saying that he was wrong.
The purchase of shares was part of a legal settlement.
From Loewen’s own mouth: “Stuart doesn’t owe me an apology.”

  16. Kelly said: “That is interesting WML, Calgary’s current mayor Dave Bronconnier ran as a federal Liberal (good luck in this town), when that failed he ran for mayor. He also seems to be very well funded”
Yess indeed..true to formula…and befor Bronco there was the invertebrate Al Doer who was a closet liberal at a time when industrial growth was big in CowBerg….He allowed the fed-Libs to get their hooks into the city nomination processes via the fed-lib mole John Schmal…who was front and center every year at the FCM AGM pounding the table for united municipal support ( the FCM only represents 18% of Canada’s municipal councils) of the latest Librano policy/crusade…and walking away with a fed funding grant for pal Al….I crossed swords with Schmal in this period when he wanted to take a cue from the feds and have a city gun registry….he was the one who put Calgary’s endorsing signature on the billion dollar registry boondogle….he has never had a problem with campaign funding.
I’m sure there are hundreds of other such anecdotal evidence from other municipal councils. The Fed Libs put far more networking and funding into getting Libs on a major city council than they do with the provincial party.

  17. In the same green vien of Paulie’s various games, there is an excellent short ed piece in the TO Sun that Debbye posts about on.. http://DebbyeStratigacos.mu.nu
Crazy Paul’s billion dollar shell game
The author didn’t sign, so I sent an Email of appreciation and then posted it too. Debbye is getting back into high gear.. take a look, but be sure to come back here or Kate will get me. 73s TG

  18. Dean [@5:20] Your take on Chrity is exactly as my own. I think she is just too intensly ambitious, sort of another Belinda.
I thought I was correct on this, and now with your take on it, I am certain about it. ‘3s TG

  19. Christy is saying this is a one-shot deal. She wants to be mayor, not sit on council. But she’ll have to step over Carol Taylor to get to be premier. Taylor has her eyes on that prize, and since she was head of the Mother Corpse at one point, she’ll get the nod or be appointed to the senate. God, what a Rogues Gallery that place has become.

  20. Did Mike Harcourt ever put a railing on that deck of his? Sheesh!..no wonder he took that tumble….stupid lefty !

  21. Al Duerr, “the Grey Mayor” of Calgary, and if memory serves me, his wife holds a very high federal guvment financial position.

  22. Hack: There’s at least one former premier that will be happy you bought the story as reported in the papers.

  23. Don,
I’ve spoken to the players involved. Have you?
My office shared a wall with Loewen’s for two years. Did yours?
Sometimes the papers (and the gossip trail) don’t have the facts.
