About a week ago, I began to wonder why one person mentioned in the discredited Rathergate memos had not commented on the controversy. My suspicion is that he may have been seeking legal advice – as far as I can tell, it looks as though he’d have one hell of a libel suit against CBS.
Today, Powerline says he’s broken his silence.
“He didn’t use political influence to get into the Air National Guard. I don’t know how they would know that, because I was the one who did it and I was the one who was there and I didn’t talk to any of them.”
“He was highly qualified. He passed all the scrutiny and tests he was given.”
“No one called me about taking George Bush into the Air National Guard. It was my decision. I swore him in. I never heard anything from anybody.”
“He was a well-educated, bright- eyed young man, just the kind of guy we were looking for. He presented himself well. I’d say he was in the upper 10 percent or 5 percent or whatever we ever talked to about going to pilot training. We were pretty particular because when he came back [from trainin.g], we had to fly with him.”
Online ABC version here. Reportedly, the interview will air tonight.
One does wonder why Dan Rather didn’t go the extra mile to the do that interview himself.
Well, ok. One doesn’t wonder.

The burning question I think we should all ask Dan is why he had Ms. Knox flown in from (?) to readily state that the documents were forgeries, however, she continued that the content was correct. Wait…..what the…so what Dan is trying to get across is that Ms. Knox is saying that the content was correct, but that the correct content was forged? Why bother to forge anything if it had a correct content? That would be kind of redundant, wouldn’t it? Perhaps they have nothing better to do at the DNC than forge documents with correct data, or perhaps it is just a long time hobby of theirs, either way these people are not only liars, they’re bad liars. CBS should fire Dan and go off the air. Their credibility has taken a direct hit.
It’s good to see ABC, and not just Fox is going after CBS. I was afraid the MSM would close up shop. Personally I hope Dan stays on to furhter discredit CBS.
What are the Democrats and liberal media, slow learners? They claimed that Dan Quayle was a coward who pulled strings to join the National Guard. Bob Novak found another bloke who joined the same unit on the same day — one of those plutocrat, politically-connected truck drivers. Tom Selleck and thousands of others joined the National Guard rather than take their chances in the draft lottery. Frankly, it doesn’t seem to have taken political influence to get in. Or am I missing something?
Charles, you are missing nothing, as usual.
Most of us who volunteered did so because we liked a particular service’s uniform or our family had a history of being in a specific service.
Generally National Guard volunteers were a little more knowledgeable or savvy about military possibilities. They tended to be thinking a bit more about how military service might fit into their life plan.
Most of our plans revolved around the consumption of liquor and fantasies about amorous encounters with beautiful young females who would regard us as heroic.
The first fantasy turned out to be true, and the second a flight of the imagination.
