Wuhan Flu

A very good podcast that touches on many the current issues of the week: censorship of dissenting voices, conspiracy hypothesis and the problem of countering “partial garbage”, unjustified scientific certainty, the dangers of tribal signaling, and the evolutionary unknowns of a virus that’s new and potentially exploring new opportunities of infection.

Dark Horse is a very good channel to subscribe to. They’re reliably middle of the road, relatively apolitical (for academics) and work hard at checking their biases.

  1. Well I got through 53 minutes of intellectual jerk off before I couldn’t stand it any longer. I gave it a real shot Kate.

Nothing but opinion here. And boy do they love prosyletizing with 1000 words when 10 would do.

I encourage everyone to listen to this for as long as you can.

These people could do an hour on whether it’s better to pay a dollar more for a quart of milk at your local cstore or go to the supermarket and save a dollar.

    And it would be deep.

    1. I didn’t even have to get that far. “It is experimenting…” (referring to the virus) is all I needed to hear to know that they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about and are covering that ignorance with a lot of pretentious bafflegab.
Viruses DON’T “experiment”! They’re not sentient! There are compelling reasons to believe that they’re not even alive! They merely exist. Their actions are based on function only.

      1. If you’d watched just a little bit further you’d have seen them (or rather, him) explain “experimenting” (he just meant it mutating and evolving). It’s the nature of podcasts that they are more streams of consciousness than polished productions. They spent a lot of time going back and explaining their words and phrases.

    2. I can’t hear her voice without hearing “schweaty balls” … and seeing that NPR program parody.

  2. Well, as of this am the world wide fatalities are approximately 279,321, if you can believe that? Only 2,897,883 to go to reach the 2018 seasonal flu fatalities.

    1. I still wanna know what was up with the ~ 20,000,000 Dead Cell phones in China…

If that number were to come out being the ACTUAL Chinese death toll…I for one would not be surprised whatsoever. That number accounts for exactly how much of their entire population….???

      .0014%

Like that would bother the Powers that be….??

  3. Well NYC is shut down by the Mob Governor… No pockets to pick, No targets for muggers to Mugg, No SDNY gangsters to Water Board, or help with Suicide options… The Waste of Virus funding @ the Javits center keeps the Mob well fed, but they are hiding out…The real upscale folks are at Martha’s Vineyard chilling…..

NJ South Jersey is clinically dead.. Atlantic City boardwalk closed down, all shore towns have zero income from beach fees…. Democrats in South Jersey are DOA…Never be elected again…..To scary for wimps

Florida Beaches OPEN…. SC Open ..but NC closed

    What’s not to like…..

    1. Fewer shark attacks in NC ? The NC land sharks have their oceangoing brethren beat

  4. The rather closed mind that the Virus is Smart & adapting. Why not look at the Human Race that has different levels of immuration & individual levels of immunity…..too many different characteristics due to manipulation of immunity cocktails…

    JMHO

  5. Lots of interesting, if somewhat windy, stuff there. Not much new to me but I’ve read a bit too much on all this for someone who can’t do anything about it. They rightly pursue the notion that it is not justified to rule out this being a human engineered virus.

The really interesting thing for me – the one that’s a window on their detached academic perspective, is at the end where they talk about the consequences of the lockdown. Their concern is the constitutionality or not of bans on gatherings. They seem to have no idea of the approaching economic end times; changes that genuinely mean the end of our world as we know it. Perhaps they address this in other ‘casts but if it isn’t at the top of their list every time then it’s likely they just don’t get it. Pretty typical of the type.

And whereas the impacts of SARS-CoV-2 are all couched in maybes and could bes (this could mutate badly, this may be causing new symptoms), the impacts of lockdown are known, inevitable and ruinously disastrous.

  6. The man is Bret Samuel Weinstein an American biologist and evolutionary theorist who came to national attention during the 2017 Evergreen State College protests. His wife here was also an evolutionary theorist at Evergreen.

He freely admits to being a staunch liberal but is willing to sit and discuss issues with conservatives in a calm and reasoned way. He has been on the Joe Rogan show numerous times.

His wordiness is probably due to be a lecturer at a liberal arts college.

  7. Weinstein’s comments about the self serving consensus amongst leading virologists that the virus’ origins are natural is interesting. We are now learning what they have been up to and they’d rather we not also think about the dangers they have exposed us to. Outsourcing all that “gain of function” research in virii to China was/is a disaster waiting to happen.

    1. In the same way that outsourcing NASA to Muslim “equality” and The Russian “Space Force” have resulted in an era of killer satellites deployed by China?

  8. Two important items:

    1. Heather presenting a chart put together by a M.D. Phd.(virologist) on the relative risk of listed activities. No gov’t. experts are doing this! So, we have zero risk(outdoor activities social distanced conflated large groups in enclosed spaces, shopping with social distancing, with masks and without masks social interaction(low risk) all conflated with (high risk) being elderly in a care home or working in the I.C.U. !

2.No government expert publicly compares speculative high to low Wuhan virus deaths with increased deaths due to social isolation, severe stress of bankruptcy both personal and business, and delayed medical diagnosis and treatment due to a premature shutdown thereof !!!

But we, the citizens, will suffer the costs of increased: morbidity, mortality and economic impairment for decades !

    {Thomas Sowell’s 3 question axiom: 1. Compared to what? 2. At what cost? 3. What hard evidence do you have ?}

We have either: Gov’t. of the people, by the people, for the people or we have tyranny of one kind or another.
    Who answers to whom?
No institution is stronger than the strength of the moral character of the people who make it up.
How could it be otherwise ?

  9. Watched it all last night, yep they can be wordy & yep they are professors.
They also have a segment of their audience that only hears, can’t see them.

They seem to understand & promote real science; form a hypothesis & test it with discipline & ethics.

I’ve always found value in listening to
or reading, intelligent people with demonstrated mastery in important fields. Especially those of calm mind, above average communication skills & some intellectual humility.
