They Don’t Need No Stinking Giant Fans

The fossil-defueling of the planet has been postponed indefinitely;

The Kobe project is one of more than 30 new power stations being planned or built by Japan that burn coal — the dirtiest and most polluting fossil fuel and one which is being phased out by some 30 governments around the world. [..]

Japanese government officials justify their reliance on coal by citing cost, security of supply concerns and the need for a diverse energy mix. Coal power plants are “necessary” because “the resource is cheap and more economical with scale,” Shogo Tanaka, director of the Energy Strategy Office at METI, told the Nikkei Asian Review.

They’re acting as though they want the lights to stay on.

  1. Wow! Doubling the size of a 1.4 gigawatt coal plant. For perspective, the entire province of Ontario had just under 9000 Megawatts (0.9 GW) coal-fired generating capacity before it was phased out – in order to save the planet – over the last 15 years. Kobe Thermal Generating Station will have more than 3 times the generating capacity of all Ontario’s recently retired thermal stations, in a single plant. Plus 30 more stations in the pipe.

    Keep the lights on indeed.

  2. Yes the last time the oil tap got shut off the Japanese got together and sailed and flew to Hawaii and protested very loudly. It appears they have learned their lesson.

    1. They will, eventually. Reality will insist upon it, and reality doesn’t give two f*cks in a cat’s ass how hard you disbelieve in it.

  3. if the TURDoo wins in ’19 I’m moving to Japan.
my niece is completely fluent in the language (taught English there for 2 yrs)
I will give her a visit on Vancouver Island on the way for a couple months for some intense language training.
I already know about nip culture, one of single effete males living at home.
leaving the majority of single female japanese on the market. I find orientals alluring.

    1. Japan is an authoritarian nation in a way that Canada never has been. Extreme gun control, a terrifying decline in press freedom, basically no regard for individual rights. Some coal plants doesn’t outweigh that, especially with Ford killing the Green Energy Act.

  4. Oh my, the Spawn will have to really, really, really, come down on our emissions to atone for this. After all, he and his Butts are the saviors of the planet, just ask them.

  5. The Japanese are a very precise, detail-oriented, yet beautifully artistic culture. I collect Japanese vinyl lp’s because their WORST vinyl production is equal to the BEST by any other country. I am not surprised by their practicality, efficiency, and logic in energy generation. TBH I was quite surprised by Fukushima … as some of the sloppy operation and response to the Tsunami disaster sounded very un-Japanese.

Consider phono cartridges … holding a unique place in the marketplace is Koetsu. https://www.koetsuaudio.com/ The amazing confluence of artistry and technology are expressed in every Koetsu cartridge. Handmade (originally) by a master samurai katana sword craftsman – Sugano … Koetsu cartridges have a unique sound signature beloved by most audiophiles. The Japanese are a beautiful culture which has managed to retain the very best of their ancient traditions, while adopting modern technology and contemporary culture.

Oh … and they FULLY UNDERSTAND what the white man is “embarrassed” about… the value of their own ethnic purity. Their own religious purity. Their own cultural purity. No, they don’t “hate” other cultures, technologies, or traditions … but they are unwilling to sacrifice their OWN IDENTITY on the altar of some ephemeral, fashionable multi-culti nonsense.

    1. kenji, are you or do you know someone of Japanese descent?
      just curious.
I’m 1/4 Irish which I like to say is ‘enough’. sans the affinity to whiskey.
I really admire the modern Japanese (except for the stay-at-home castrati) their astounding technical skills.
and the fact they are among the FIRST to show up at an earthquake site with their technology in tow.

Fukishima saddened me greatly. but unlike other cultures and political parties they actually learn from mistakes.

      1. I’m taking a leap here…He said he is a white American, therefore a Caucasian… of Alsatian and Swedish descent. The Kenji name is some fictious warrior Ninja from only Kenji’s imagination from when he was a nice little kid. A few weeks ago he made us all view a Ninja warrior from some cut out. You must’ve missed it, hb.

I’m sorry I have such a good memory sometimes. Since Kenji may not see this, this is the best I can do to answer a gentleman like yourself. Sometimes people don’t have time to reply to every single comment. Oh and sometimes he gets very p.o. and insulting and other times he’s affable.

        Well anyways…just sayin’

    2. They may not “hate” other cultures, but they do not have respect for them. As an example, the reason Japan treated prisoners of war badly is because in their bullshitdo, sorry misspelled that make it bushido, culture, only cowards surrender. And nothing you do to cowards is too bad. The difference between Japan and Germany during the second world war is that Germany only killed those whom they considered inferior, Japan raped and tortured them before killing them. The Rape of Nanking was unusual only because it was done in front of the whole world. It was routinely replicated hundreds of thousands of times throughout cities and towns in occupied China. The difference between Japan and Germany after the second world war is that while Germany owned up to her foul deeds, Japan does not. Not to this very day.

  6. The BC greens have opposed LNG plants in BC, even though this LNG will displace coal plants in China, S Korea, and perhaps Japan. Justin Turdeau and Butts were opposed too until some federal official sent Justin a cocktail napkin with the amount of money that would flow from BC to Quebec in additional equalization payments.

While the green-NDP-Liberal assault on the oilsands was going on Vancouver increased its coal export capacity and is now the biggest coal exporting port in North America.

    1. Those Japanese coal plants burn B.C. coal, the province’s biggest export. Something to remember when Dippers and Greens fulminate about global warming.

While we’re at it, BC Hydro imports coal-generated electricity from Alberta every night, after Alberta’s peak consumption hours are over. While water builds up behind BC Hydro’s dams, the Teslas in Vancouver are recharging on coal power.

      1. Since the Greens and NDP are also against hydro dams, where are they going to get the electricity to charge all the electric cars they want people to drive? Oh its called brown-outs – One city or municipal district at a time.

        1. Actually the GreeNDP true believers think that solar and wind will power everything in the future, despite the lack of capacity and virtual impossibility that these can supply electrical needs at a grand scale.

Believing is enough for them, facts don’t matter.

          the arrogance of these misfits.

      2. if you mean coal from south-east BC, I’ve got to correct you. Almost all of it is coking coal, which means it’s used to make iron and steel.

Although it can be burned to produce electricity, that would like making golden tire weights to balance your truck tires. Yes, you could do that, but you’d be an idiot if you did because there’s more valuable uses for it.

There’s lots of cheaper coals available. Australia, for example, has coal a lot closer to the coast so it’s a lot cheaper to get to the seaborne market.

  7. Eventually, cost and reliability is the main consideration. Germany also moved from nuclear to coal. Renewables like wind and solar can not replace baseload power. If Japan, and Germany/Europe, had land and resources like North America they’d probably dash for gas. It’s cheap, clean, reliable and plants are a relatively quick build.

In fact, I think that the real reason that solar and wind were pushed on all international governments is precisely because western Europe does not have the abundant natgas resources like North America. European governments, and other resource poor countries, wanted to make sure there was no North American cheap natgas advantage — so they insisted on solar and wind. Is it possible that big EU countries intentionally hobbled North America? Look at the Trudeau Liberals and Quebec hobbling Alberta and Saskatchewan energy at a cost of billions per year. Would pipeline obstruction and expensive regulations and an impossible permitting process be happening if Quebec had oil resources like AL-Sask? Of course not. Hurting your perceived enemy is more important than helping your country.

During the next recession, all governments will be forced to look at costs. There’s already riots in France. AL-Sask needs to take notes on how to effectively protest.

  8. Like modern China, modern Japan was built on cheap labour (which Japan no longer enjoys), stolen technology (the Japanese haven’t had a new idea of their own in thousands of years) and cheap Saudi oil.

Once the oil runs out (and it will, what with China guzzling it all), Japan will die. Nothing of much value will be lost when that happens—or would have been had the Japanese been wiped off the face of the earth in the late 1940’s.

    1. “Making decent cars” was certainly an original idea when the Japanese invented it in the 1970s. They god for competition!

  9. In 2008 our house in central Calgary used electricity at an all-in cost of $0.11 /kWh.
    So far in 2018 it’s $0.22/kWh.
Thanks to our governments , city, prov, feds for “looking out for the electorate”,?

  10. You really need to watch this professional explanation of Prof. Zharkova’s Oct 2018 release. The Global Warmer’s during her presentation blocked her charts and graphs, and the other release they played with the audio so you could not understand. It is laid out here. It is the sun’s 4 magnetic field’s go out of phase, in the Maunder only 2 went out of phase. Also the Milankovitch cycles play a part as at the same time the earth will be further from the sun. Food shortages to begin as soon as 2025. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHGbri7gWWw
