Someone please explain to me a recent quote from a vegetarian stating that it takes 3000 gal. of water to produce a gallon of milk. I call bs on that. Does anyone have the facts on this.

A Holstein dairy cow in peak production (8-60 days post calving) will drink 25-35 gallons of water a day (depending upon
weather) and milk 110-130 lbs of milk. 1 gal = 9 lbs/milk depending upon butterfat, usually 3.4%.
I don’t know where they got the 3000#. Probably pulled it out their a@$. Facts don’t matter to these people.

drinking 3000gal of water a day would lead to water intoxication, even for a 1800lb dairy cow.

They are adding in the irrigation for the feed (I think).

I read somewhere that a cow eats about 100# a day. If a head of lettuce weighs 1#, and if you could get a cow to eat lettuce … that would be 350 gallons of water.
350+35 = 385
I read in NA the average yield is about 7 gallons. So 385/7 = 55 Gal.
Those cows must be eating almonds.

Don’t call it BS because that would be BS from a male cow not a female cow. So it you could actually tell vegetarian that the water number is HS.
Regardless….unless all cows are killed they would still likely drink a lot of water because they would want to survive. So, it is best to tell the ‘mentally challenged’ human you are responding to to stop drinking water so as to not waste any more water for animals that wish to live.

Free meat!!! Damn, I got my animal flesh yesterday… Besides, I doubt my butcher (nor my late Father, who was one) would be impressed!!!
I tolerate vegeterians, but Vegans had better be from Vega, or I’m not interested!!!
The German greens made imposing a meatless Friday on Germans an election platform recently; they accordingly got deservedly hammered in the country of schnitzels and numerous cooked pork products.
One of my young cousins summed it up best: “I’m sorry we have to kill animals to eat them, but they’re just sooo tasty!!!”

Fjord, I’m in the process of developing a new genetically modified breed of cattle. I’m thinking of calling it a “Partialstein”.

Every day. Usually at breakfast and/or lunch, and/or dinner.

I know a guy in New York (a work contact) that is a vegan. No meat, fish or dairy is his mantra. However, he tends to survive on deep-fried sweet potato fries and Monster energy drinks and Espresso. He also carbonates his own distilled water. I guess that helps! 🙂

Thanks for the well informed answers (I think). I tend to agree that the water for irrigation must be factored into the equation. One of the other factors is water in Cow urine and dung. This is not a waste of water it is back into the ecosystem (fortified I might add)
Also, would these vegan lunatics not realize that prior to colonization these central plains had millions of bison using up the water for the last ten thousand years

Jack, the simplest explanation is that Greenpeace doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
On the farm where I grew up we had 30 cows milking at anytime and many pigs and the water was supplied by a 1/2hp pump that ran intermittently even in the winter when the cows ate only dried grain and hay. In the summertime you hardly have to water the cows at all because the green grass they eat is full of water.
