Seeking Help from Ottawa Readers

There are reports now coming out that the powers at be have shut off the traffic cameras in Ottawa and are displaying old static images, thus obscuring the nationwide truckers protest. Surely this could never happen in a liberal Western democracy, could it?!?

If anyone in the Greater Ottawa area is able to [safely] take any photos or video, please do share them.

Update: I don’t think that several commenters understood what’s written above. It’s not difficult to find links to Ottawa traffic cams. The question is, are these showing live images or video? When the trucks are scheduled to arrive in Ottawa, it would much appreciated if readers could take screen snapshots and record when they were taken.

    1. Perfect, thanks J.Train! Fixed images only, but each image has a time and date stamp. If someone is at one of those streets and sees it wall-to-wall with trucks (and gets pictures), but the traffic camera shows wide open, then that’s the proof that the records are being doctored.

Not that that would ever make the CBC or CTV or others.

      1. Lickmuffin, who indeed got the point of the post and was just trying to be useful for frogs' snacks says:

Regarding the update: The Ontario 511 site shows traffic cameras throughout Ontario. Throughout Ontario includes multiple cameras in the Ottawa area. Was under the impression that there were multiple convoys moving on different highways at different times, so thought it would be a useful link. Crikey.

  1. Yes.. My coworker who commutes east along the 401 was checking traffic found all the images near empty.. Your government is gaslighting you..

    Trudeau needs to resign..

  2. Can’t confirm. When I went to check out the cameras, they were still updating once-per-minute (more-or-less as is the fashion all over North America). In order to do what you’re alleging, they’d have to have sixty images an hour for the hundreds of cameras that are apparently in the Ottawa area. Not impossible, but I’d be surprised (and disturbed) if they could do something like that on short notice.

Now, I certainly did not check the feeds for the most likely routes the truckers might take in to Ottawa (mostly because I have no idea, since they’re coming from several directions including the U.S.), so mebbe I missed something.

    1. No huge amount of work required to do what Robert has heard, they just switch them to “Hold”, as seen in many of the available images.

  3. The convoy isn’t supposed to be in Ottawa until Tomorrow. It was aiming for Kingston today, but given it’s size it’s not unreasonable to expect it to be around Belleville. I checked the Belleville traffic cams and the only ones that don’t have an image are the 401 cams. All the other cams are up and running. The Kingston cams seem to be operating just fine but they’re showing very little traffic. Does anyone know where the convoy is at this time?

    1. Ignore that comment, there don’t seem to be relevant cams around the Belleville area. They were posting cams east of the GTA as Belleville Cams. My bad for not checking first.

The Kingston Cams are up and running.

  4. I have just checked the city of Ottawa live traffic video website (link below), which includes the government of Ontario Ministry of Transport (MTO) cameras within the city of Ottawa. All appear to be working.

The Trans-Canada highway ( Ontario highway 17), which becomes a 4-lane highway (Hwy 417) about 30 miles west of downtown Ottawa, will bring some parts of the trucker convoy from western Canada into Ottawa. Of all the MTO cameras on Hwy 417, the one furthest to the west, which will be the first to show the convoy, is called “(MTO) Hwy 417 near Palladium Drive”. The link to that camera is on about the 20th row of the list of cameras shown at the link above.

A large part of the convoy is also expected to drive to Ottawa via Hwy 401, north on Hwy 416 which joins Hwy 417 about 15 miles from downtown Ottawa.

    1. The MTO cameras which can be linked to at this website do not display live video. They display a current picture which is refreshed ever minute or two.

  5. At 8pm Thursday there’s no traffic to speak of of any sort north bound for Ottawa on the 416 (north of Kemptville).

  6. I did see someone somewhere this morning post incongruous images, one of a live feed from the government of the Parliament buildings, all lovely and quiet, while the poster showed many people marching in front, in real life.

Also, freedomconvoy2022 on Instagram has a guy showing the CBC filming with their cameras pointing away from the massive crowd at Vaughn Mills, as to make things look more sparse for their report.

    1. Yes we do. And how f-ed is it for that to be true here in frickin’ Canada?

They’re lying with the traffic cameras and webcams? What a bunch of pissants.

  7. Folks, to test street cams:
A-get your cell phone, and pull up a URL for an Ottawa street cam. Any link above, I like OttawaMJ’s.
B-Bundle Up. Its -30C with the wchill.
C-walk out to that street cam.
D-hit refresh on the web URL. Wait 30 sec, hit refresh again.
E- if you see yourself, the webcam is working

Doing this in a car is tougher. You really need to walk. And make sure you know the orientation of the camera, some four ways look the same from all entrances.

Warning for progressives and the university educated: STAY OFF THE STREET! Vehicles can be dangerous.

    1. Which is exactly what I did at 7:15 this morning.

Tested two cameras, and they are both working. The lag between camera and cellphone screen is less than 5 seconds. Really, as fast as my frozen finger could hit refresh. At least for two cams here : https://traffic.ottawa.ca/map/intersections?lang=en

The cameras I tested were not on the route, and the convoy has yet to arrive… but so far, so good.
