92 million bucks and nobody bought a lousy calculator;
The MMIWG national inquiry overstated in its final report the percentage of Canadian homicide victims who are Indigenous women and girls by misquoting a figure from Statistics Canada — and later quietly altered the report online after CBC News raised questions.
The error, which was confirmed to CBC News by the inquiry’s director of research, occurred when the commission left out a word that had appeared in the original Statistics Canada figure.
The statement “Indigenous women and girls now make up almost 25 per cent of homicide victims” should have referred to their percentage share of female homicide victims — which is a smaller number of people.
It’s one of a number of statistics in the inquiry report on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) that appear to conflict with numbers collected by the government of Canada, or with other numbers in the same report. In some cases, the inquiry report’s footnotes cite government reports that do not support the footnoted statements.
And the error was subsequently corrected in the online version of the report, without giving public notification.
The real number is 6%.

92 million bucks to prove what, that the solve rate for those murders are the same as they are for other murders?

Look it up. Buy the book.
I guess that’s what you get when you hire professional axe grinders to produce a report and not academics. Garbage in garbage out.
What exactly, is the difference between “professional axe grinders” and these “academics” you speak of?
Do you mean the “academics” who chased Shepherd out of Laurier?
I meant people who have actually done research as opposed to people whose only qualification is bitching and complaining. I see your point. Much research today is selectively done to support a predetermined opinion as opposed to an attempt to determine some “truth.”
My only question on this sensationalist misreported, misrepresentational statistic would be, “What makes you imagine it was NOT done like that on purpose?”
It’s like why all their gun control statistics report “… were rising precipitously to THAT MUCH in 2016… ” – guess why they didn’t say “to 2018”, or “to 2019”? 2016 was an exceptionally violent year in Canada, and crime statistics have declined steadily since then; but there’s obviously no gain in fear-mongering about crises that are going away all on their own without any sort of government intervention.
Cue Ralph Goodale – or better still, Sockpuppet himself: “Murders of all kinds, and robberies with violence, are decreasing across Canada and have been for a couple of years – and THAT’S why your LIBERAL government NEEEEEDS to confiscate ALL those NAUGHTY GUNS!!! Besides, we need the votes in Toronto and Quebec, and I promised Paul Martin and Wendy Cukier…”
Teacher’s unions, poor life choices lead people to believe that it is the government’s job to take care of them, and they bear no responsibility for their own well being.
At that point, I refuse to help those who will not help themselves.
“I can’t supply the numbers or research, but I know and feel that it’s true!”
Not to sound callous, but why should these 138 women victims be considered more special than the 517 other murdered women during that interval? As others have mentioned, it’s not that hard to find out why, if you don’t mind stepping on a few Indian Industry toes.
Also, 142 aboriginal women were charged with homicide (convictions not mentioned) during this interval. How does that fit into the crime statistics or narrative?
Another Calgary Marc: It fits perfectly!!! But we don’t want to talk about that…do we!!!
Is anyone surprised at which direction all of errors accidentally leaned? No? Me either.
Wafer … that was my first thought also …. how many of these “errors” ocurred accidentily on purpose?
Stewart Pid: Trudeau’s gov’t lies all the time he has taught his minions well! Time for a change….VOTE OUT TRUDEAU AND THE LIE-BRALS IN OCT. 2019!!
I have mixed feelings about whether or not this was actually a mistake. Too often political activists let the narrative take precedence over facts. Especially intersectional progressives because they openly say that facts, logic and accuracy are evidence of “whiteness”. The 6% number might not have been dramatic enough to allow them to label it genocide. The weird focus on trans rights instead of indigenous women should have a warning sign.
The real number is 6%. Getting closer.
Those detailed reports show that in the four years from 2014 to 2017, 138 Indigenous women were slain and 142 were charged with homicides. Indigenous women made up 5.8 per cent of Canada’s homicide victims.
I wonder how many of those 142 accused were convicted. Could that statistic suggest more indigenous women are killers than are killed?
I actually agree with the MMIWG advocates that math errors aren’t the issue. Whether the absolute NUMBER is 25% or 6% isn’t the issue. The issue is that far too many Indigenous women and girls are victims of violence. The math isn’t as important as the WHY!?
However, here is where the MMIWG shills and I sharply depart. Because I DO NOT believe they are the least bit interested in the “WHY”. Because, if they were, they would find the answer right back IN the Indigenous culture. Instead, they are using this issue to IMPLY that “white people” and “white culture” are to BLAME. We aren’t. The very reason these women and girls go missing with no trace is BECAUSE the “white mans” justice system is excluded from Indigenous culture. No evidence is given to authorities. Nobody talks. It’s akin to inner city gang violence. Nobody talks to the POleece.
It’s the Indigenous People’s problem to solve. If you treat “white people” as the enemy … then, as far as I am concerned, solve your own damn problem … or don’t. Just leave “white people” out of your problems and your tax money grab. Leave us out of your hateful politics.
You know the RCMP have been “gagged”, along with all other police agencies. They KNOW the “WHY”. They know how and why Indigenous women and girls are being abused, murdered, and disappeared … but they cannot SAY “why”. They’ve been gagged by the political operatives running their departments.
““white mans” justice system is excluded from Indigenous culture.”
I suspect that on some reserves, every single resident might know who committed a murder but the RCMP doesn’t.
Yep. For different reasons, I imagine, but some relating to it being a warning to others.
As a sidebar to this, I suddenly wonder how many aboriginal men are murdered within a short timeframe of these women and how closely that correlates to unsolved murders of the women.
Or the RCMP does know, or thinks they know, but they don’t have enough admissable evidence to persuade the Crown there is a reasonable chance of successful prosecution. Because some people will talk to the police privately, but won’t admit in public (i.e. Court) what they know.
Well said Kenji. Want to know about another huge indigenous problem? Indigenous kids without families that can’t be legally adopted UNLESS the prospective parents are Indigenous. In 2016 there were 4300 indigenous kids in foster care in Canada accounting for almost half of all fostered kids. Kids need nurturing families first that provide for their needs, safety and growth as individuals. Not culture. Racism is alive, well and in plain view in Canada.
Martin B: Look what happens when the kids are left with the parents frozen to death because the parent was to drunk to know better. He was not charged with murder a slap on the hand and all is well!!! Where is the justice for these Indigenous kids…. there isn’t any. Canada’s justice system needs to change….we are all Canadians UNITY….not multiculturalism and different laws for each culture will be the end of Canada!
Narrative was right, though.
Right… It’s the thoughts that count.
Some people think that math skills aren’t important. We’ve got computers and stuff for that, right?
But someone who’s skilled in mathematics is in a much better position to judge whether a stated fact or statistic is reasonable, and to detect when even a correct statistic is deceptive. Having mathematical ability makes one far more likely to put up your hand and say “About those numbers…”
The very FIRST thing I was taught in my college Engineering courses was to … check your answers! Once you’ve typed the numbers into your HP-35 RPN calculator (I still use mine every day) … CHECK THE ANSWER!! Do the numbers “look” right!? Does the answer make sense!?
Numbers, math, and statistics divorced from reality are meaningless scribbles on paper. See: CAGW.
I have a 48G sim on my Android phone. Good times.
Check your answers. How true.
I had to teach a general requirement geometry class in a university to fill my work load. (My field is actually physics.) To make it easy, I gave them the classic 3-4-5 triangle. You’d be surprised how many students gave the answer as 0.2! The reciprocal of 5, of course. Just common sense would tell them that can’t be the right answer for the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose two sides are 3 and 4. I found out they had trouble handling fractions in general. Something they should have learned in grammar school. They were not dumb, they all learned in the one session I devoted to teaching fractions. But it showed the state of education then … more than forty years ago. I shudder to think what it is now.
There are books which offer “back of the envelope” questions, where you have to estimate amounts based on your common sense. Sample questions: How many people die every day? How many feathers are there in the world? How many pairs of snowshoes are in Canada? You don’t have to be exact, because no one knows the real answer anyway — sometimes being within an order of magnitude (or two) is a success. Such skills sharpen our number skills, helping us to detect implausible figures.
Engineers need to be able to estimate and get a feel for plausible answers. My undergrad engineering design instructor split the class into several small groups and then posed the question, “How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?”
Estimate population, piano ownership, frequency of tunings, time per tuning, come up with an answer. The group answers varied by a factor of twenty, but the class average was within 5 percent of what the Chicago Chamber of Commerce provided (I am sure they were really confused as to why a University in Saskatchewan would want to know about piano tuners).
Where I worked, they called the first guess SWAG. I always understood it to be sh_t wild ass guess, which meant it was even wilder than just a WAG. But not really. If you are at a meeting, and they start talking about putting a bid in for a program, and ask for a SWAG, you better be in a ball park. Factor in complexity, manpower, duration in real time, and come up with an answer to a question out of the blue.
I am not surprised this site has a lot of engineers.
Physics … wow. I am not surprised, based on your logical, rational, mind.
Now tell me why I thoroughly understand virtually EVERY ‘mechanics’ physics topic … but when it gets into electrical ‘forces’ (and even more esoteric topics) … my mind goes numb. I guess I am just a “visual” thinker. If I cannot see it and visualize it … it never seems to resonate in my head. Is that just my intellectual capabilities hitting a wall … or is there a trick for visualizing the invisible?
Don’t be too impressed. I was, barely, good enough to get my doctorate. I wasn’t good enough to do research at a university. I worked almost my whole career as an engineer (satellite, airborne radar). I take it you are an engineer?
By “mechanics” I presume you mean classical mechanics and not quantum mechanics. The latter is very anti-intuitive.
Electricity aside, classical mechanics is the only physics we deal with in everyday life. Of course you are familiar with it. You don’t have to visualize it. You understand Newton’s Laws of Motion because you see it in action all the time.
You are actually surrounded by electromagnetic radiation, even if you don’t see most of it any more than you see gravity or even oxygen. You just have accepted gravitational effects as mundane. (a deep pun there) The thing about EMR is that it is defined by frequency which extends through many powers of ten, and acts very differently depending on the frequency. The longest frequencies are familiar to you because they are carriers of tv and radio signals. Your receptor (dish, antenna) literally picks signals out of thin air and convert them to images and sound. The visible spectrum is a narrow band in the EMR which is unique because it is visible. But it is EMR nevertheless. And the principle is the same.
The receptor (cones and rods in your eyes) are “tuned” to the visible spectrum, and convert them to the color spectrum. Your “tune” your radio to a particular carrier frequency, which carries information your radio receptor can pick out and analyze the exact content to turn them into physical sound waves, which your ears can pick up.
I don’t know. Would it help if you visualize millions of tracks supporting billions of cargo trains. Particular guides can bring you to different tracks and get inside the boxcars to retrieve what is inside them. Some of the trains are so benign (low frequency) they bounce right off you and you don’t even know it. Some of them are so powerful they can interact with your body (ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays).
EMR is different from shock waves because it does not require a medium to propagate. And also because shock waves are longitudinal. The mutually perpendicular electrical and magnetic fields sustain the energy which travels in the third perpendicular direction. Imagine a long line of line dancers. Instead of doing everything in unison, each dancer is different from its neighbor by one beat. If you look at it from the side, you can see the whole dance performed, each beat by a different dancer. And the dancers stay in place and goes through the cycle of dance over and over, but more and more dancers are added to the line as they dance propagates through the line.
Hope this helps.
I haven’t addressed the electricity most engineers and other people are familiar with, that is the AC current. I presume you know that a lot better than me.
Ha! Barely obtained your physics PhD … I bow to your greatness. I prefer not discussing my career in too much detail, suffice to say that I have done some Engineering of structures. Preventing structures from succumbing to Newton’s empirical laws of nature is a satisfying pursuit. Including lateral Newtonian forces propagated by wind or fault line acceleration.
Your visualizing techniques are helpful. I should pick up a physics book and see if my age and wisdom helps understand the “invisible” physics.
Just curious, since you appear quite expert … are cell phone, and cell phone towers harmful to humans? It is quite vogue in my upper middle class community to blanket OPPOSE every new cell phone tower … esp. 4K towers. Are we killing ourselves … just to Tweet about the traffic.
No, I don’t know anything about cell phones at all. Well, probably less than the average cell phone user.
A lot of people have accused different frequencies of EMR as being harmful to humans. I have no idea, because I know something abut EMR, but not much about its effects on people, as that is more medical science.
My gut feeling is the level of radiation is too low to do much. Much less than X-rays. But I could be wrong. Maybe the saturation of our environment by EMR may reach a breaking point.
“There is no question that Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ and two-spirit people are among the most vulnerable people in Canada, and face disproportionate rates of violence.
Ahhhh … here we have it! Look! Suddenly … as if to EXPAND the statistical evidence … LGBTQqeieio and “two spirit” (WTF!?) women are ADDED to the violence crisis. You see this whole charade is aimed squarely at “conservative, white, traditional Western culture”. This whole ruse is aimed at taking down Western culture.
This white, Western, traditional culture adherent has NEVER committed violence against ANY of these “protected” groups … have you? Have you punched a lesbian today? Me neither. Have you kidnapped, raped, and murdered an Indigenous woman? … me neither. You see, we adherents to Western culture actually RESPECT the Law. Respect our culture of “inclusion”, but NOT “special” treatment for “special” people. We don’t believe any group or person deserves “special” treatment unless they are wounded Veterans of War. Or vulnerable handicapped, young, or elderly people. All others can just get the hell on with their own lives, and leave the rest of us the hell alone!!
Have you punched a lesbian today?
It’s still early.
I’d only punch back in self defense … since women and men are now “equal” … if not blurred completely out of focus.
It is curious that the correct 6% number is finally given well into the article.
Why isn’t such a major error part of the headline?
‘MMIWG Report Overstates Homicide Rate For Indigenous Women’
This whole situation reminds me of the media silence on the black-on-black crime in, say, Chicago.
There are things we shall not speak of.
It probably wasn’t an error. It was almost certainly done on purpose. It’s easy to let the lie out of its cage because it will never get put back in.
This kind of destroys the whole narrative that got this inquiry started doesn’t it.
Well then perhaps CBC can further investigate and start asking the minister responsible to elaborate.
What was her name again?
I love the reports where they write the conclusions first and then work backward.
Saves a lot of work when you don’t have to investigate contrary evidence.
(Notice I didn’t say it saves time or saves money? Because I don’t believe they try to do that.)
Whenever someone tells me we need more government, I pick some random dude/chick that works for government and say: “You want that guy telling you how to live your life?”
Government: A palliative care facility for half our earnings.
Government .
They take half of our earnings, and it is still not enough, they need more and more all of the time.
I am VERY sure we would have a much more vibrant economy if we has 50% less UNIONIZED GOVERNMENT WORKERS!!
They seem to be more of a drain on society, than they actually enhance society. They seem to be doing such a good job telling Canadians the news. THAT IS SARCASM !!!!
It is sad that I have to let all of the Torons know that.
Honestly, I’m still confused how this made it to the CBC….
Random act of journalism.
The leaker will never work in the MTV* again, they will be assigned the far north bureau in Alert.

A typo, a math mistake, a lie. Whatever, same difference, let it go as long as it advances the cause.
The culture of Rape & pillage will never be satisfied until they collectively capture enough followers….The Indians have used the Courts (SCOC) to define the Metis and NOW include the LGBTQ ….The Next SCOC declaration will lump them all together in the Big Tent…..
The Indian/Metis report on Indian School abuses are wildly out of date….The original abuse reported in Newfoundland by Monks was in the 1950’s & 60’s….. Most of the report’s testimony was from Indians who were not even born when the original Inquiry into Religious (Monks & Catholic) abuse of Children….I guess the Oral history is playing forward with a vengeance…
BTW: What’s with all the Transgender discrimination on Football’s cheerleading squads….The Toronto CFL cheerleaders should ALL be Transgender.. Fits with the team & City….Come ON
Toronto QueerNauts?
And 98% of that 6% were murdered by Indians themselves male and female. Indian Reserves are like 3rd world shitholes very very violent. Been on them, been through them know Indians that live on them.
Kind of helps one understand why Stephen Harper resisted setting up this kind of rent-seeking boondoggle.
Anybody remember their findings? Is there promise that the number of murders will be reduced, or was this just so much additional political posturing?
This is just further proof that we need a new 60 million dollar, ten year inquiry into this. And an indian leader stated on Trudeau’s CBC this morning, that indians should vote for Big Chief Justin to keep the gravy train rolling along.
Sounds a lot like Democrat Chicago and its Black Population?
350 killed so far in 2019.
83% black.
9% homicides clearance (solve) rate.
This is the Second City of the United States.
Don’t believe me. Look it up at https://heyjackass.com
“Math is hard.”
Please, we are talking about grade school arithmetic. Not even high school algebra, geometry, or calculus. Any high school graduate should be familiar with them.
Differential equations, non Euclidean geometry, tensor algebra, group theory, contour integration in complex planes. Now those really justify the sentence “math is hard.”
Sadly … basic math is now remediated by every major college in America
What? So they unlearn it?
Attempted remediation … there, I fixed it
Well that screws up Turdeau’s narrative now doesn’t it?!
It’s the same math as “the budget will balance itself”.
No it’s quantum arithmatic, where any answer could possibly be correct, and why is one answer superior to any other, after all?. He is, don’t forget, an expert on memorizing a Wikipedia page on quanum computing.
By establishing the MMIWG commission, then allowing anyone competent to resign and not ensuring proper supervision of those remaining in authority, the Trudeau government has committed what amounts to numerical genocide.
I read all the posts and yet no one grasps the fact that this is bullshit when the solve rate is identical for all fucking murders. Stop now.
The conclusions were no doubt given to the contractors at acceptance. The hard part of the exercise was having to sit through listening to the presentations of however many thousands of FNs and their white (lawyer) pimps to make it seem legitimate. One would need skin like a turtle to have to listen to the same message replicated thousands of times over on FN victimization and the need for more white guilt to feed the machine. The math error was likely part of the pre-ordained conclusions with the caveat that it was a trial balloon and if anyone noticed it, they needed to CYA.
Hah! Just had a thought. Yes, I know, difficult. But the FN, does it stand for First Nations or Effing Natives? Just a thought I know none of you will now be able to shake out of your head.
The author appears to me to be hinting that a bit more investigation would be warranted.
I have emailed him to ask about this & mentioned that I used this StatsCan link:
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3510006001
I always understood this to be an exercise in more guilt Wampum; but I didn’t expect outright fraud in a “Royal Commision” or whatever it was.
“or whatever it was.”
Yeh! Exactly what was it? And why did they employ people so invested in the only conclusion possible to them?
Don’t worry. Our crack media will get to the bottom of this 1/10th billion dollar failed exercise in virtue signalling by the Liberals.
OK cut to the chase. What the Report really is saying is that another HUGE HUGE apology must be made on behalf of all White Canadian Males and a HUGE GIGANTIC PAY OUT MUST HAPPEN. Lets begin with BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS. How about 5B will that assuage the guilt? No OK 10B and 50% of Quebec? And we wil through in Ottawa. Make Ottawa an Official Reserve and move the WHITE TRASH MP’s and all their White Trash Civil Servants out to Baffin Island.
They can have ALL of Kaybek, they just have to take it with them when they leave. Problems (multiple) GONE!!!!
“The real number is 6%.”
I doubt it’s even that high.
