Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says he will release new information related to the SNC-Lavalin affair on Sunday.
In a Saturday afternoon press release, Scheer said he will present new documents related to the scandal that has plagued Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.
Scheer’s team did not specify what type of information is in the documents or how many pages will be released. The announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Ottawa.

I was watching Philpott being interviewed and she was asked if she still respects Trudeau. She said that yes she still respects him because he is the prime minister. And look how quickly both Venezuela and Yugoslavia descended into nightmare and hell. Both were relatively wealthy countries all things considered, at peace, not fighting with neighbours, at peace with each other and the world. And it all unravelled really, really fast.
So Trudeau has dealt the cards and it appears that Andy is quite happy with the cards he has been dealt. We’ll see how all of this plays out shortly but, and here is a bigly BUT here. Suppose, just suppose, that there is a very disillusioned Liberal sitting somewhere in Ottawa that has leaked something to Andy’s party. Somebody, like the somebody that leaked the deal of the Omar Khadr settlement, and he’s a little pissed off. Just suppose he has the background that links Trudeau, Butts, Wernick, Iacabucci, McLaughlin, to the SNC-Lavalin lobbying process that started all of this. Do you think this would allow Andy to sit back and say to Trudeau, “Hey bring it on Buddy, I’ll see you in court!”
It’s time for Max and Andy to sit down and figure out a way of presenting the conservative voters of Canada with a slate of candidates that both sides can take some pride in. We need more than just the weak and anemic CPC who have let us down almost continually for many years now. But I don’t want to see Trudeau able to split the vote and get in with weak voting support either.
Rather than going into full bun-fight mode, the two parties of the political right should work this out as they managed to do in Alberta. However, I think it’s going to take one electoral cycle to get there, if I switch roles from advocate to pundit. It’s not what I want to see, but what I expect to see.
Also, this issue while important is not really the full story and as the election draws closer, I think it might be possible for the voters to lose interest just to get Chantal Hebert off the air saying SNC-Lavalin in an overly precise fashion, then waving her arms around like one of those used car lot advertising gimmicks (that I call wind-blown gumby). I will miss the grimace of Andrew Coyne at each manifestation of that, but them’s the breaks.
So could the Liberals have steered Trudeau to sue as a way of getting him to trip over himself. (I think it reveals him as a weak leader and undermines his authority.) If they have an excuse to get rid of him, they can slot someone else in before the next election.
Scheer’s lawyer’s letter to Trudeau is priceless, explaining to him he will have to endure discovery and give evidence under oath in open court. Of course they know this is a feint, a bluff, but the last paragraph of the letter states if Trudeau does not proceed with court action, Mr. Scheer will conclude his allegations are true and unchallenged. Let the games begin.
