China’s Communist Party is intensifying covert influence operations in the United States that include funding Washington think tanks and coercing Chinese Americans, according to a congressional commission report.

The report said the Johns Hopkins School of Advance International Studies, a major foreign policy education and analysis institute, has received funding from Tung Chee-hwa, a vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the party group that directs the United Front Work Department and includes a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, the collective dictatorship that rules China.
The funding for Johns Hopkins came from Tung’s non-profit group in Hong Kong, the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation, which is a registered Chinese agent.
In addition to Johns Hopkins, other think tanks funded by China and influential in American policy circles include the Brookings Institution, Atlantic Council, Center for American Progress, EastWest Institute, Carter Center, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Would you care to bet that, not only is Chinese money flowing into think tanks in both the US and Canada, but that significant amounts of their money is flowing into legislators’ pockets on both sides of the border as well? But then surely Diane Feinstein is a one-off case and the extent of their influence on her is being exaggerated as well…

Good point. The US foundations are heavily involved in Canadian politics. The difference is that those vile foundations are private while China’s influence peddlers are appendages of the State/Party. The US Government /administrations are not innocent either.
One way China is exerting control in Canada is thru funding of Chinese Language Media — if one controls the message ….
The Chinese may be learning from the Russians how they hijacked the election in 2016 — It is not clear if the Chinese copied the Russians or the Russians copied the Chinese in Fall 2004 with the “50 Cent Army” using people influencing social media.
In July 2008, The Daily Telegraph reported “Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson has intimate relations with the Chinese elite, dating from his days at Goldman Sachs when he visited the country more than 70 times.”
