Germany willing to cut tariffs on US cars, lifting automakers’ shares
Germany’s chancellor said Thursday she’s willing to back lower tariffs on U.S. auto imports as a potential European Union (EU) concession to the Trump administration – just one day after CEOs of Germany’s biggest carmakers reportedly voiced support for eliminating such tariffs entirely.
Huh.

Anyone remember the G6?
Dimwit Trudeau left holding the bag.
I remember the G6. We wern’t part of it.
But for a magnanimous gesture by GHWB to his friend Mulroney Canada would be sitting on the sidelines.
Some will learn that Trump does not bluff and will get on with doing business with him on his terms.
Others, like the clown man-child fool named Trudeau along with his high school cabinet will never learn.
Watched Trump’s rally today. The man is a force to be reckoned with. Anyone who still doesn’t understand him at this point absolutely gets what they deserve.
Exactly. I heard his speech on the radio while driving and he talked about trade being fair and reciprocal, and stressed ‘reciprocal’. An EU tariff of 10% and a US tariff of 2.5 % is not fair or reciprocal. Neither is a 270% plus or minus Canadian tariff on dairy products.
As far as Canadian lumber is concerned, the Canadian stumpage fee method seems to be an ongoing trade irritant. but I think only accountant/lawyers know the mechanics of the business. I wouldn’t want to begin to argue that one.
His speeches may sound humorous and bloviated, but are deadly serious as he apparently has always been a strong advocate of free trade.
All trade that isn’t coerced or fraudulent is fair and reciprocal by definition.
Will Trump and the US congress agree to end US agriculture subsidies? Not a chance.
Unfortunately Canadians are getting what Trudeau deserves.
I understand Trump pretty well: he’s a weak, incomplete (and mentally ill) individual who validates to other weak, incomplete, and likely mentally ill individuals.
You forgot your link to CNN.
I have a link to reality. Apparently yours is broken. (•_•) / ( •_•)>⌐■-■ / (⌐■_■)
Yes, your link to reality clearly shines through on all of your posts.
“Trump will never actually put tariffs on China.”
Guess what? He did, even though he says he personally likes Chairman Xi. Remember how China honored him during his visit? Red carpet, private dinners in the Forbidden City, public respects? But Trump likes America and Americans much more. PDT Is willing to go toe to toe with China, even though he needs their support to solve the North Korea problem.
What do you think he will do to a pissant leader that disrespects him? Or a nation that refuses to meet its promised defense commitments? That applies to both Frau Merkel and Lucky Pierre. Just remember, “It’s business, nothing personal.”
“But Trump likes America and Americans much more. ”
So much so that he’s making them pay way more because because of his idiotic ideas on trade.
“What do you think he will do to a pissant leader that disrespects him? Or a nation that refuses to meet its promised defense commitments? ”
Push them to each other and towards China.
Well JT (with a little boost from Mcleans) is all set for a summer or early fall election as a referendum on Trump. And the dimwit Cons are walking “shoulder to shoulder” with the little bugger.
Canadians really are two short planks dumb.
I don’t think we have scratched the surface of dumb yet.
With the exception of a few brave commenters on SDA, Canada has no conservatives. So-called Canadian conservatives are in fact Red Tories. Canada’s genetic socialist pathology starts in school where they learn that having a foreign Crown as the owner of your country, all its resources, and the very property you live on is an honorable thing. They are also taught that communist low quality government run medical care is a virtue and quite literally a bragging point to the bemusement of Americans. They are also taught that being an weeping unarmed pajama-boy who dare not defend himself and his family for fear of upsetting the Crown is an act of valor. Canadians are also taught that being conscripted against their will into 2 world wars by the rightful owners of Canada (the British Crown) and then used as cannon fodder to save the lives of as many British overlords as possible, was an act of supreme bravery on the part of Canadian servicemen.
I only hope Canada’s situation improves once the Hereditary Supreme Leader of Canada King Charles the Jughead is sworn in.
All hail the genetic moron King and his supplicant Canadian serfs!
Well! Well! You are a slap shot worthy of speaking truth to power…Well done!
We really need to get away from percentage tariffs and start applying them model by model. And the way to do this is to find an American model automobiles that provides equivalent transportation to say a certain model of BMW and subtract the American price from the BMW price. Since automobiles are made with very similar methods and the companies have very similar cost structures, this calculation would give you a rough idea of how much profit the Germans are making on each car exported to the United States. I would set the tariff on each model as 90% of that estimated profit margin. In other words get the Germans serious about the trade in balance by taxing away all the profit they make from trade with the United States.

Where are we to get orange juice rom.
Who needs OJ. Too much sugar, too many people with diabetes, too many people overweight.
I have a different take on OJ. It really doesn’t contain as much sugar as you might think. About 20 g per 280 ml serving. Another myth is that sugar has a lot of calories. One gram has less than 4 calories. The glass of orange juice has about 80 calories, or less than a bottle of beer.
The PROBLEM is that we overeat. The serving size is too big. Most people order a large pop (32 oz) which contain almost 400 calories. That is equivalent to drinking 5 servings of orange juice. Add to that a Big Mac (600 calories) and large fries (510 calories) and you just ate 1510 calories for lunch (just over half the daily calories for a male). I’ve seen people order 2 Big Macs with fries and drink for lunch. These overweight people are eating 5000+ calories per day.
So don’t go too hard on 100% natural orange juice, not from concentrate and with no added sugar. Stick to 280 ml serving (just over 1 cup) and you’ll be fine.
Bongo and his JV team could slap tariffs on every single item imported from America, and the end result will be the same.
Canada will badly lose any economic war with the US, but most Canadians are too stupid/ignorant/brainwashed/distracted from knowing any better. When their food and essentials cost a lot more, it’s Bongo’s doing. Nice way to tax Canadians more, without being called a tax, by the way.
Are there any grownups on Bay St with a connection to their Fiberal friends, to advise them how this is going to go down? This will end badly for most of Canada, especially Ontario and Queerbec
On his former radio show, Bill Bennett always used to say about Washington that “You’re either on offense or defense”. Trump is always on offense. Bush was always on defense. TBH, he wasn’t even on defense. He just lied there and took every stomp to the head. With a pathetic smile.
Exactly … and an ‘aw-shucks, I’m just a simple country(club) billionaire shuffle of his feet. In hindsight I really loathe Bush … and loathe the hell out of the Republican Party who didn’t even TRY … or want to try unseating a corrupt President Obama.
True dat! As much as I admired GWB, that turn the other cheek cowardice disguised as Christiany dogma would make me crazy. The man would never, ever defend himself or his policies and always left that hard lifting up to people like me. That is why I love Trump. America loves a fighter and Trump is a street brawler extraordinaire.
The entire Bush clan are owned by Davos and the Bilderbergs. One World Government acolytes to the core. If you luvs the UN and the EU, then anyone of the Shrubs is the leader for you.
“America loves a fighter and Trump is a street brawler extraordinaire.”
And yet Trump is very unpopular. Huh.
Also, whining like an incoherent bitch on Twitter does not a ‘fighter’ make.
More popular than Obongo at the same time in his term. Yes, Trump is popular, contrary to your unimportant opinion. It’s just the screeching from the usual suspects that makes it seem the way you want it to.
With the usual suspects losing their minds, and sounding insane, means Trumps attacks are on target, chump!
Nope. That’s wrong. That’s just factually wrong: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/
“Trump is always on offense.”
He’s also losing. Pruitt resigning, backtracking on child separation, the GOP losing special elections, etc
You go first, Comrade Erika.
Everybody knows the last German leader to negotiate in good faith with the Americans and British was Admiral Dönitz. And he only did that because he knew the Russians would kill him if he didn’t do a deal on terms the western Allies would accept.
I’m surprised the Europeans don’t complain about the American’s 25% tariff on imported trucks.
Volkswagen has a compact pickup that is sold all over the world – except the US.
Free trade is tit for tat. I put a 25% tariff on trucks and SUVs because they are the most popular in my country and you put a tariff on small fuel efficient vehicles because they are the most popular in your country.
China puts a tariff on almost everything. Goods up to 25% and services up to 12.5%. Free trade is a joke. Italy has almost 300 protected foods within the EU including cheese and dried meat.
“China puts a tariff on almost everything.”
China’s ‘tariff burden’ has been falling for decades from almost 20% to less than 4%. https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/TM.TAX.MRCH.WM.AR.ZS?locations=CN&name_desc=true
“Free trade is tit for tat. ”
No, free trade is simply an absence of barriers.
I have been saying for a while Trudea wants and needs this trade war . Even more so now with the groping revaluation. As most of you have been able to decipher , when Trump achieves agreements with China and or Europe, we are kind of left standing naked and alone . Well , we have Mexico. Of course this ignores the fact we have many industries in Canada that have suffered under the current Nafta arrangements with Mexico. As the Liberals feel their power slipping away an early election becomes more and more likely.
Indeed.
A trade war with the American hitler is bongo’s election strategy. Very risky IMO – as is an early election call.
The economy is skidding along. The effect of the new taxes (tariffs) have not yet sunk in. The jobs report that just came out suggests part time and self employment led the way – all in eastern Canada. Not a prescription for a robust economy.
The libranos know this. They may escalate the rhetoric with Trump to set the table for a, ‘were gonna save Canada’ early fall election. If that is the strategy look for bongo to get in the Trumpsters face at the NATO meetings.
So true! It is patently obvious to me that “fighting the evil American President” … RESISTING Trump … is nothing more than an election strategery. Let THAT sink in my fellow Canadians … your boyish tossle-headed PM is willing to CRIPPLE your economy … to retain POWER. PM Sockeyebrow must be taking advice from Bill Maher who hoped for America’s FAILure … as a willing price to be paid for dumping Trump and regaining POWER
If Canadian voters don’t have a Nov. 8, 2016 … moment … then your beautiful country may just be DOOMED.
Do you really think PM Groper is that stupid? On second thought, that was a dumb question, as of course he is. When Ralph is the brightest bulb in cabinet than you know how this will end.
Ha!
If there is one common thread during the trump era (which really began when he declared his candidacy) is the over-reaction of the left, the centre and the right wing establishment to anything trump says or does:
A couple of examples:
1. talking about nato members paying their promised share means he wants to end NATO and break with the members of the alliance.
2. wanting to renegotiate NAFTA means he is anti-free trade
3. Ditto imposing tariffs
To my eye these et al are all negotiating positions. To make judgements on them before the end has been reached is folly. And it is a trap that ultimately more often than not makes these opponents look foolish and harms their credibility (and enhances POTUS DJT.
Reserving judgement is the sober course, but they seem incapable of it when it involves DJT.
Well said, and you identify correctly the cabal.
Mr. Tulk!? You finally coming round on MY President!?
I have been very consistent in my opinions of him. He was not my preferred choice. And he has many flaws. But compared to the choice in 2016 there was no choice.
Thus far he has been a very good POTUS. But final judgement on that is years away.
No Gord, the fact that Trump is an idiot who has seriously bought into the ‘dey turk r jerbs’ line for decades is what makes him anti-trade, as are his idiotic tariffs, and his insistence that Canada turn the NAFTA into some sort of EU-esque customs union.
None of it was over-reaction. He has been every bit the destructive moron we suspected. Every. Bit.
So you would have voted for HRC and would vote for Harris or Warren in 2020.
Good to know.
I’d totally support HRC in 2016. She was clearly less dangerous to anyone of sound judgement.
2020: Harris, yeah that might be the best we’re going to get. Not Warren. Whatever horror we get in 2020 could have been avoided if Trump had just lost.
Undork, sound judgment is something you are missing a by a country KILLometer, just ask Vince Foster!!!
America is the world’s biggest, richest “buyer” of just about every consumer product on earth, with the possible exceptions of rice and seafood. Americans BUY …the rest of the world manufactures and hope to SELL. If you want to continue selling to the biggest, richest market on earth you’ll now have to do it one of two ways:
a) with over-priced products due to U.S. tariffs; or …
b) with competitively priced products that will now have to be MADE IN THE U.S.A.
The EU/Germany dropping the tariff on imported cars sounds nice but it will not result in selling even one more U.S.-made car there … because all the American car companies already have ‘sunk costs’ in their EU factories. If you want an “American” car in Europe it’s built in Europe by U.S. companies there, Ford, GM and Fiat-Chrysler.
2) But Trump’s tariff on EU cars coming into America WILL DEFINITELY result in European car makers opening several more BIG plants in the U.S. IF they want to keep selling their cars to Americans.
In summary, Merkel’s offer to ‘end tariffs’ has ZERO BENEFIT for the U.S. or American companies. Trump putting tariffs on imported EU cars has BIG BENEFITS for the U.S. economy because EU companies will now have to build factories that employ Americans and pay taxes IN America.
“Trump putting tariffs on imported EU cars has BIG BENEFITS for the U.S. economy”
No it doesn’t that’s just mercantalist horsecrap. It just means Americans are going to overpay for crappier cars. That’s it. That will cause investment to shrivel. It will also hurt exports/FDI because it is harder for exporters to America to get dollars.
As most of you are probably already aware, the hate-mongering of Trump by the CBC has often been at levels that would even make a CNN viewer blush. Too many Canadians have unquestioningly accepted their false narrative that Trump is a mean-spirited bully, instead of the truth about yet another outstanding Trudeau diplomatic blunder in his public back-stabbing of Trump.
This is really starting to look as much as deliberate ‘sabotage’ by the Trudeau government as much as it does professional ‘ineptitude’. I’ll bet you a positively motivated personality like Doug Ford could probably hammer out a USA/Ontario Fair Trade Agreement with Trump in a matter of days.
Copied from elsewhere:
Trump: “I can tax Americans who buy your stuff!”
China: “Oh yeah? Well I can tax Chinese who buy your stuff!”
Trump: “Oh yeah? I can tax my people more!”
China: “Oh yeah? I can tax my people more!”
Idiocy. Pure and simple.
“the ‘dey turk r jerbs’ line”
Oh man. You’ve gotta stop watching Jimmy Fallon. Like him, you’re neither funny nor intelligent.
That line is from South Park you fool.
