    How does a government subsidy make the press free if the government can tell you what you can and can’t say under threat of pulling the subsidy?
    These Leftists really are ignorant about how economics work.
    How about you sell an honest product and see how many free citizens want to buy it?
    For the sake of argument let’s pretend the government subsidizes the press.
    (which is mentioned in the 1st Amendment)
    Should the government also subsidize religion which is also mentioned in the same amendment?
    How about the 2nd amendment? Should the government subsidize firearms ownership?

  4. I used to subscribe to Vanity Fair and read Vogue magazine occasionally. Then I started buying VF about 4-6 times a year at the news stand. Now I read Vanity Fair at the library and only after leafing through it. VF has been so anti-Trump and so pro-Hillary Clinton, that it is sick making. And Vogue magazine just “doubled down” on Michelle Obama as being one of the beautiful First Ladies ever and a fashion icon. I cannot stand the woman.
    The fifth estate has really “tanked” themselves over the last 15-20 years.

  6. Note that the usual quoted subsidies to the oil and gas industry revolve around the government generously allowing them to deduct their expenses or partake in credits allowed to every other corporation.

  8. Last I read, about 2/3 of Americans distrust the media. I don’t think you can recover from those incredibly bad numbers. Government subsidies will not repair trust, subsidies will confirm that the msm is bought and paid for by progressive politicians. Frankly, at this point, even going back to unbiased news reporting won’t save them. Journalists have destroyed their profession.
    Everything partisans politicize will suffer the same fate – elections, science, public education, religion, sports, law enforcement, universities, research, entertainment, etc. For instance, reproducibility and replication of published, peer reviewed science is around 25%-40% depending on the field of study. I guess progressives thought taking over trusted institutions and warping them would help their cause but now it’s biting them in the ass. People are tuning everything out and looking for alternatives. It’s difficult for the chattering class to convince people that they need to listen to experts (people who agree with and are part of the chattering class) once people have figured out that most of the experts are FOS. Good luck regaining trust and maintaining social cohesion.

    The established scientists who should be taken seriously, have proven to be on the take in the climate change scam while other unrewarded analysts have exposed their data manipulations. Just who is more credible here?

Added thought: somewhere along the way people in power, especially but not exclusively progressives, forgot that’s there’s a difference between convincing someone your ideas are better vs. manipulating people into acceptiing your ideas by lies and omissions vs. bullying people into forced compliance via government force and character assassinations. Personally, I think only libertarians still understand the difference between the three modes of persuasion.

  15. Liberals absolutely HATE debate. They refuse to even acknowledge an HONEST and TRUTHFUL opposing viewpoint. So now … they want to go one better and simply do away with all opposing TRUTH … by labeling it “false”. Scum. Indeed. Human scum.
    I am reminded of a lunch discussion I had with several of my extremist leftist friends. They were talking about all the new “green” regulations being imposed by Jerry Brown … and how wonderful it was. After they had orgasmed over the new regulations … I told them that they were ONLY hurting the poor and middle class with what amounts to a regressive tax on the lower classes. I said they will be dealt a disproportionate economic blow because they cannot escape paying a greater proportion of their incomes for energy, transportation, and increased costs of everything. They were OUTRAGED at my idiotic falsehood. They said that poor people will just use less energy … “which is a good thing”. When I said they need to cook dinner just like everyone else … but a higher PG&E bill will be devastating to their future menus. They mocked me and said that their EBT cards will make up the difference. Their hostility was palpable. They were outraged by my unwillingness to swallow everything they said without question. I still remember the sickening feeling I got watching and hearing them squirm and falsely rationalize higher energy prices.

  17. Well Kenji, here is the essential problem. Your friends are wealthy, or at least wealthy enough to afford another $100/month for utilities without much trouble. And because they were probably born in and live in and have never left the sunny moderate clime of California (except to go skiing at Tahoe), they have little concept of the remainder of the country (or the world for that matter). And because they live in California, they think that they’re smart because …. California. Thus, they live in a different world than those despicable Trump supporters in fly over country because …. yokels don’t live in California.
    You should find better friends.

  18. I just finished having a debate with a classic progressive liberal on the merits of allowing Islam into Canada. Before I said we should not, I was instantly called a Racist – Bigot and needed to grow up etc etc.

  19. The intellectual class make a huge error when they look at economics in a “static” state. The actual affect is very dynamic….one step leads quickly to another.
    On CNN Van Jones said that increased Fracking (cheap NAT Gas) will preempt the resurgence of Coal, but that is not true because it just provides price competition & with low cost energy the increased Manufacturing with provide enough demand for both….The real truth is ALT energy will be unable to compete with Coal or Gas & the Windmills will blow away….
    Climate Change in the USA is DOA…Don’t expect Trump to be in Paris, followed by Russia, China & others….The UN/EU will need another funding fool…The EU socialists will be stuck in their own Swamp…
