Law enforcement officials told NBC News the suspect’s name is Abdul Artan, an 18-year-old student at the university. He was a Somali refugee who left his homeland with his family in 2007, lived in Pakistan and then came to the United States in 2014 as a legal permanent resident of the United States, officials said.
The motive was unknown, but officials said the attack was clearly deliberate and may have been planned in advance.

As soon as I heard the attacker hit people with his car, not to mention stabbing others, I figured it had to be someone of the religion of peace. Can’t wait for Trump to take charge, though that means there may be more attacks here as we are soft targets.
There have been several (i.e. at least three) such attacks within the last 12 months in the US, and the motive may never be known despite the “best effort” of the FBI.
Living less than one hour away from the Cascade Mall, I found the sudden news blackout on the young Muslim Turkish-born shooter just before the election to be, well, interesting.
One of our relatives got a look at his Facebook page before it was deleted and there were certainly references to Islam. Probably not at all significant though, given it’s a matter of “mental health.”

On a related tangent. I happened to get to know several Somalis here in Canada including one heading to jail on fire arms offenses. They all said that they grew up thinking that in Canada money was free. You simply had to show up to collect it.

I have read that Somalies as a group are difficult to successfully integrate. They come from a vastly different culture where education is not particularly valued. For this reason they are frustrated when they confront challenge and disappointment in Canada or the US. The young men are particularly vulnerable to recruitment by extremists. This situation is true in Canada, as well as the US. The Syrian culture (though still newish to Canada) has similar vulnerabilities. Despite Mr. Pollyana’s pronouncements about diversity being a strenght, there are pockets where diversity is almost guaranteed to create problems. Somalies are easy targets for crime and radicalization. Calling this guy an “African American” is truly “fake news”, and Blacks in the US should be enraged.
