Heinlein can always be relied on for great quotes. Pegging the Spawn as a useful idiot is about as accurate as one can get.
The Heinlein quote illustrates a prescient understanding of the Socialist dystopian FAILures. I believe the Americans who fawn over Castro and the Venezuelan State … need to be force-fed the crap sandwich prepared by their Socialist Chefs.
Spuds Mckenzie doesn’t speak for me.#Not my Prime Minister.Castro may you burn in hell.
How hard they fall. Cuba was one of the richest Latin American countries in 1958 and is now one of the poorest. Venezuela was one of the richest counties in Latin America and is now one of the poorest. The common thread is radical socialism. The commies blame Americans. The trade embargo doesn’t stop doesn’t stop trade with 200 countries, just one among 200. They can’t trade anyhow. They essentially produce nothing of value.
As someone who has travelled to Cuba and went beyond the resorts (interesting that in old Havana most tourists were European not Canadians who prefer to stay in the isolated resorts), Cuba is not the socialist paradise some think. While I enjoyed visiting there, I would hardly call it a model to follow. When trying to change currencies there were long line up (hardly any ATM machines and also few places with Wi-Fi) and one time I could only change into Euros they were out of Canadian and US dollars. When arriving you have to bring lots of cash as you cannot exchange into convertible pesos until you get there and likewise you cannot take them off the island. Food can be quite awful if you go to the wrong place. Make sure the restaurant is privately owned which will have decent food, not state owned which are horrible. It’s true Cuba has a strong health care and education system, but so do many other countries that are not dictatorships and likewise the average monthly wage is only $20 a month, something I don’t think most on the left here would approve of. In fact working at a resort pays more than being a doctor since you at least get tips. Castro may have been better than Batista, but that was 57 years ago and the country seems to be stuck in 1959 rather than improving. I’ve also been to China and Vietnam who are supposedly communist, but unlike Vietnam, they allow private ownership and generally let the market decide output and prices rather than the state and thus why you don’t see long line ups and rationing anymore there and they have strong economic growth unlike Cuba.
Actually if you check wikipedia on GDP per capita, Cuba falls in the middle for Latin America although calculations of GDP per capita doesn’t give the full story. In Cuba, one is paid 500 Pesos a month which works out to $20 a month however all necessities are paid in Pesos so purchasing power there is around $500 a month otherwise $6,000 a year which is close to the average salary in Dominican Republic, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. However anything beyond basics is paid in convertible pesos which the average Cuban only gets 240 a year thus in that sense Cuba is one of the poorest. Essentially unless you are in the government, an industry that relies heavily on foreign tourists where tipping is common, or work in the black market you get all the basics provided by the government, but you cannot move beyond that. Venezuela has one of the higher GDPs per capita in Latin America due to its oil, but poor management has meant much of the population is stuck in poverty, high inflation, high crime. Both countries should be developed ones not developing so the fact their per capita GDPs are higher than India and similar to China is not proof the system is working as their GDP per capita used to comparable to the Mediterranean and Eastern European countries who are now doing much better showing both were countries that had strong potential and failed.

I think the biggest problem is most Canadians go there to hang out at the beach and party and chose Cuba because its cheaper than most Caribbean locations. I’ve found in general Canadians seem to be more about partying and hanging out at the beach than learning about the culture and history, that is usually where they go in places like Bali, Thailand, or Greece. I am myself more interested in learning about the culture and history thus why I roamed freely around Havana and I found European tourists seem to be more interested in that. While some in Europe admire Cuba, I suspect many don’t. A lot on the left I think liked Castro more because he was anti-American and as a small nation who likes to be for the little guy, we tend to cheer for whomever we see as the weakest without looking deeper into it. The idea that perhaps neither the US or Cuba were good doesn’t seem to occur to many. I am not opposed to Cuba being communists if that is what most Cubans want. If they have free and fair elections and the communist win much like they did in Moldova a decade ago or Nepal, I am fine with that. I hate communism, but I believe in democracy people have the right to choose whatever government they want. What I don’t agree with is silencing dissent and jailing dissidents. Interestingly enough Bob Rae in his tweet was not so praiseworthy of Castro while socialist president Francois Hollande give both the good and the bad. Britain was more neutral while Spain ironically was quite positive despite having a conservative government although I suspect their strong ties are more cultural than political (same language, former colony, much of the Cuban population including Castro are of Spanish heritage).
Cuba does have a lower infant mortality rate than the US, but higher than Canada, higher than almost if not every Western European country, higher than Japan, and higher than Australia. Otherwise the US has the worst health care system in the industrialized world so beating them is nothing to brag about. Its the same problem when we debate health care, the left opposes any reforms because hey we have a better health care system than the US, forgetting Sweden, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Japan all have superior health care systems to Canada and all of them are hybrid systems that provide universal health care to everyone but don’t ban those from paying for it if they wish to.
I grew up in communist country and out of curiosity and with lots of trepidation I went once to Cuba. Fearing that my instincts will take better of me and I would run in a trouble with communist again in my live, I choose to stick to the resort. Five minutes after arriving, secret police guy approach me asking question. How do I know? I can smell them mile away, their soviet school mannerism, the way they talk, the akwardness of being a human. I believe they are in every resort, so if anybody venture there try to play Canadian idiot tourist.
I have to admit, Cuba is worth visiting for the music and dance in natural , spontaneous state.
One of my Hombres has spent a considerable amount to time in Cuba, which he likes very much.
When he goes, he has the pleasure of having the same “taxi driver” shuttle him where and when he wants while on the island. It has developed into a great friendship, which he anticipates with much joy as he has learned much about Cuban life, and vice-versa. He has contributed to the finances of his Cuban driver, as he is able to tip him as per the local customs.
This is a bit of an issue for the locals as he is also one of their Doctors. When he is driving, he is not at the hospital or clinic, as he has had to rely on the driving job to try and subsidize his “government wage” in order to pay his bills.
When I hear how fabulous the Cuban medical system is, this always brings me back to the reality that socialism and communism suck the life out of those who have to live within it. The Castro family are parasites that are living off the life and blood of that Island Nation.
I think Justin deserves the same…Baffin Island comes to mind.
When I here of the wonderful medical system in Cuba I have to shake my head. An acquaintance travelled to Cuba and was unfortunate enough to become very ill. She was admitted to hospital. Although the doctor seemed quite capable he had nothing to work with. There was no soap, no warm water, no disenfectant. She required certain things and the family had to go out and try and find them. And this was at a more tourist hospital. Yeah the much vaunted cuban health care system. Last time I checked we were tied with them for 30th place.
I heard a kid interviewed on Calgary radio a coupla years ago. He’s had the misfortune of being involved in a car accident and ran afoul of the medical system. He claimed the hospital he was in had no hot water and the toilets were plugged. I dunno?
The system was good enough for hugo chavez though.
A number of years ago a buddy of mine was forced to go to Cuba on spring break with his skool teecher wife (there were about a dozen going from the school). The skool teecher asked me what she should take to give away to the locals. I suggested copies of Ayn Rand’s Capitalism or a fistful of US$. The teechers felt obligated to give the peasants something….in order to feel good about themselves.
When she returned I asked if there was any evidence of prostitution. Nope, the reply. The teechers were not interested in finding out anything about the island prison or the culture. Mr castro was a good guy in her opinion. The all inclusive price with unlimited cheap rum was all that mattered.
I used to try to talk to people who visited Cuba about how oppressive a regime it is, but have given up as they believe the lies they are fed there. There do not want to believe that that friendly guide is actually a secret police operative.
monkey, you miss the point entirely!
Most Cubans HAVE NO CHOICE regarding the government of communism/Castro.
They don’t have elections!
If they protest, they are disappeared, PERMANENTLY! Why is that so easily overlooked? Do you not see how totalitarian that is?
Its funny how Canadians, especially the lefty types, will rail against low wages, “lack” of rights and equality here, but hey! Plunk them into a regime like Cuba, and, all of a sudden the same SJW lefties who will march in the street and scream slogans at home, will be willfully ignorant at the lack of same rights for Cubans, but blissfully talk about their “health and education” systems, which are grossly overrated.

Very interesting to see that secret police are in the resorts which cater to Canadians and other foreigners. Did you get the feeling that the secret police were there to spy on the tourists, or on the Cuban locals who work in the resorts?
“It’s true Cuba has a strong health care …”
No it is complete bull$hit. The health care in Cuba is atrocious. I could provide a lot of examples but let’s focus on one specific claim instead:
“Cuba does have a lower infant mortality rate than the US”
That is also not true. Pregnant women undergo mandatory ultrasound. When the ultrasound shows that there may be any minor complications with pregnancy women undergo mandatory abortions. That’s it, no options, no choices under the knife they go, and often perfectly healthy babies are butchered. Deaths of babies born prematurely are not recorded as infant deaths either. In fact babies born prematurely are left to die and recorded as stillborn. All this is done to pump up the fake stats about Cuban health care system.
It is a totalitarian state, they have to control everything that is happening. The first reason would be to prevent if any tourist would have an idea to get involved on any level in undermining the regime would that be distributing any materials or even trying to convince locals of perils of their system.
Of course there is secret police at these resorts. For fun one can be checking who of the locals is not. Try to arrange under-the-counter transaction and if you see fear in their eyes, hesitation or unrelaxed body language, you know you are dealing with a regular person.
“I am not opposed to Cuba being communists if that is what most Cubans want. ”
So majority is all that is needed? Would you like some historical examples of decisions undertaken with clear supposer of majority that lead to millions of corpses? Just ask Jews, Armenians, homos in any pislamic country etc.
You see when someone opposes communism (or islam) and wins they tend not to slaughter those who disagree with them. When someone opposes communism (or islam) and loses, they probably should not be making long term plans.
Communism, like islam should be opposed, always, and whether it is imposed democratically, or not, makes little difference.
“Monkey sez : “Cuba is not the socialist paradise some think.”
Heh…. you don’t know that much about the world and socialism in particular.
Cuba actually is socialist paradise, it is the end result of socialism. It is paradise for the ruling class, the big time socialists. With the help of international socialist or INAZIS for short. Isn’t it interesting how the acronym fits with the times?
For the poor suckers that the unions seduce with false narrative it has become a mirage in the desert, a fata morgana.
You may have been in Cuba. You obviously know nothing about socialism.
Append, “while it stared in the face” at the end of the last sentence.
I know some Canadian people who went to Cuba. Despite staying in or near their hotels along the beach, they were not deceived by the government flimflam. It was pretty plain what was going on.
They just didn’t care. Because cheap holiday.
Some people are like that.
Sheesh, is there no end to this, above should say “while it stared you in the face”
It should be understood that the Cuban “healthcare system” that Trudopian communists have so much praise for is at best a two tiered system, one for the slaves and prisoners and one for the ruling totalitarian commie elite. Calling the Cuban healthcare system “universal” or “world class” is a preposterous lie on both counts. That fat lying POS fake commie Micheal Moore in his propaganda movie (can’t remember what it was called) went to a communist health care facility in his movie, a facility used exclusively by the Communist overlords and their families, while he ignored the other system used by the everyday Cuban slave… a deliberate and calculated lie by a vile pig.
Cuba’s low infant mortality rate is vastly bolstered by the Cuban gov’t insistence that “live births” are not counted until the new born baby has lived to 1 year of age.
In some other countries, Peru rings a bell here, the age that a live birth is counted is 3 days, I don’t know if this is counted in Canada, or if it’s written off by the Liberals as a late late abortion. /possible sarcasm here.
Sample photos of Cuba’s “comparable to first world” healthcare. Don’t be shy, make sure those of you seeing this, that you scroll to the bottom in order to see the phych patients pilled on the gurneys. Why weren’t they fed? http://www.therealcuba.com/?page_id=77
Thanks, you are absolutely right, I forgot about the one day rule. For those who do not understand the significance: majority of infant deaths occur within hours after birth, the odds of infants survival increase dramatically after the first 24 hours.
Castro is a repressive dictator, no question, just saying Cuba has never had democracy before. Hopefully they will make a transition towards it. That being said Castro is not the saint the left makes him out to be, far from it, but for the right he is a repressive dictator, but hardly the worst on earth although still bad. And here is the thing you can have free health care and free education and still have a free press and free elections much like the Nordic Countries managed to do. Not advoacting Canada adopt the Nordic welfare system, but for those on the left who favour this they should point to those countries not Cuba as models.
when evil dies it is cause for celebration not for mourning.
Cuba is a shithole, and given the choice, nine-tenths of the population would leave.
When I say communist, I mean a centrally planned economy and state ownership of all industries. Off course such economic plan has been a disaster wherever it has been tried, but if people want to vote for stupidity they have every right to. We’ve seen that done (take your pick on who) in many other places. At least with elections you can throw out the government if you don’t like them and I somehow doubt that even if the communist did win, they would stay in power forever. Mongolia elected the communist in the first free election, but they got turfed sooner or later and haven’t come back since. Moldova elected them, but then wisely turfed them as well. Perhaps maybe it will be more like Czech Republic where 10-20% vote Communist every election, but none of the other parties will form a colaition with them, so they thankfully cannot do much. Heck even in Canada we have a communist party and there is nothing in theory stopping them from winning, it’s just most Canadians aren’t stupid enough to ever vote for them.
Friend who goes to Cuba brings antibiotics and shoes for children, two commodities always in short supply in communist countries.
No absolutely not, democracy does not trump human rights and property rights are human rights. None should ever get to vote on confiscating the property of the other.
the primary driver in every election in Canada is just that.

Uttered many times over at the CBC yesterday is the tired canard regarding universal health care, Do these people actually know about the need to bring your own aspirin, or endure setting fractures sans anesthetic? Some of those visiting should know, as residents ask tourists for basic over the counter drugs. Perhaps even the tired cliché about Cuba having superiour infant mortality rates compared to US probably was posted. This myth has been destroyed many times before and common sense should warn against it, still it persists.
Underlying CBC and Trudeau’s endless praising of this murderous tyrant is the thin virus of anti-Americanism. Pick away that scab and the real attraction to Trudeau Sr and Jr is that Castro poked a stick in the eye of USA.
Note that the old adage about “Favourite Communist Dictator”
lacks a counterpart as in “Favourite Fascist Dictator” with the trend setting CBC set. Wonder why that is exactly.
