We shouldn’t scoff at the Americans and think ourselves superior to them. After all, it’s now perfectly legal and acceptable to hide one’s face when taking the oath of citizenship–provided, of course, one is a member of a certain pseudo-religious political movement that says it’s “peaceful”.
I’ve worked as a poll volunteer in many federal elections and without fail, there would be those who would attempt to vote while being ineligible. That ineligibility would range from non-residency in the electoral district, to non-citizenship. In each case we who objected were criticised by others from other parties – even from the Deputy Returning Officer. In one case, a “voter” was recognized as having already voted in another riding. She fled.
Fraud is much more prevalent than most would expect. Thankfully we still have paper ballots.
