The Rise, Fall And Now Rebirth of California Chrome

Sports Illustrated;

On the first Tuesday in July 2015, a thoroughbred racehorse named California Chrome was walked slowly off a long, white equine transport van and onto the backstretch at Arlington Park racetrack in suburban Chicago. Earlier that day, he had been flown from England, where he had spent the previous three months training. Post time for the Breeder’s Cup Classic is 5:35pm Pacific on Saturday, carried live on NBC. Earlier races on the card today and tomorrow are available on NBC Sports, TSN2, and streamed via Facebook. (Check here for more broadcast details).
I was supposed to be in the stands cheering him down the stretch. In fact, I was supposed to be in the stands right now (there’s my empty seat #104), waiting for what could be a race for the ages between Songbird, Beholder, and Stellar Wind in the Distaff later today.

  1. What a shame, Kate. Don’cha hate it when one passion interferes with another! Hope your horse wins.

  2. Kate – I have had hunting dogs for decades. Never was a breeder but I know the risks cuz I raised horses for decades as well.
    Thanks for these periodic postings from the racing industry. An often maligned and misunderstood endeavour but what a sport. There’s nothing like it.
    Affirmed vs. Alydar – 1978, a sporting event for the ages. Nothing has come close before or since……
    Good luck with the pups.

  3. Ah, but what way to go. My mother often complained about the dogs that she and my father owned, but guess who openly wept each time they had to send one on to its final rest?

  4. Great classic race two incredible horses on display .
    Bob Baffert winning his second breeders cup event of the day showed he is up there with the great trainers .
