  1. For Obama to fire Comey before the election would spell disaster for the Clinton campaign, as it would affirm for many that the political elite are above the law. Comparisons to Nixon’s Saturday night massacre would be inevitable.
    But that does not prevent Obama from criticizing Comey. Perhaps it’s a quid pro quo — I don’t criticize you, you don’t worry too much about the White House’s involvement.
    Given how much flack Comey has taken in the last few days, he might welcome such a deal.

  15. Comey cannot be “fired” by Obama or anybody else.
    He was appointed by Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2013 for a 10 year period. The only way he will depart before 2023 is a) if he dies; b) if he resigns; or c) if he is impeached by Congress. Comey has excellent job security as long as he can avoid hit men sent by the Clintons and by the Democratic Party.

    IOW, if they can’t find a scandal on Comey, as in Trump’s case, they will just make something up.
