Thelma is a squirrel, about 11 weeks old. Her rescuers want to return her to the wild, but she suffered from glaucoma in her right eye. The eye was blind, inflamed and obviously painful. For Thelma’s health, the eye needed to be removed.

I would think that any squirrel without depth perception would otherwise
be known as prey. If it cannot judge distances, jumping and running
can be hazardous, but a blind side could be lethal in the wild.
There is a term in abnormal psychology for people with a morbidly misplaced sense of empathy. People who would coddle a pestilent rodent back to health but be fine with crushing the skull of a premature baby.
Its classified as a form of developmental retarding psychosis and it approximates a Borderline personality disorder (BPD), also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder – impulsive or borderline type or emotional intensity disorder.
Personally I care not what the shrinks classify it as, I want these people identified and kept away from any position of authority or public office.
out here on the loony left coast, if a seal is found floundering everyone from everywhere is called out to assist. They have numerous vets, nurses, biologists brought in (at taxpayers expense) to “save” one seal. The seal is usually flown over to the Vancouver Aquarium where they receive better care than any human being under are “free” health care. The same loons who are so nature oriented, won’t let nature take its course in nature.

I agree with the sentiment here in general, BUT stories like this remind us that humans are a different species altogether. we have technology, instant communications over long distance, written language etc but we cannot allow ourselves to become totally utilitarian. we need that compassionate edge in some measure. just not in all cases or highly politically motivated selectivity.
furthermore, the surgery had to constitute an incredible opportunity to practice some very fine and difficult surgery which, wait for it, could in future be applied to human needs. ie a form of animal based research. etc.

You’re both full of it. None of the people involved in this are qualified to perform human medicine (well, one of them’s an ex-nurse). This was a publicity stunt, plain and simple, although I wouldn’t discount a bit of “hey, opportunity to practice” here. It’s like complaining that the auto shop down the road spent all that time and money restoring a classic hot rod instead of fixing your grandmother’s prosthetic hip. The two things are completely orthogonal.

This isn’t “private resources”. These displays of professional altruism and the media people hired to publicize it are being subsidized by the pet owners who are finding it ever more difficult to afford normal veterinary care.

So a compassionate veterinarian, at her own cost and using nothing but a press release on her own company’s website, offers up a story of how she assisted this little creature. She used the tools of her trade at her disposal and to no cost to anyone else using methods and procedures for which she studied and trained and devoted a good part of her life doing so so that she could bring some relief to this animal. To me it is no different than what my Grandpa and I used to do when we rescued stunned birds that hit the window (before the cats got them!) or returned fallen nestling owls to their nest at considerable personal risk (70 year old guy climbing trees!) or hauling hay out in the winter to feed starving deer. We used the means that we had at our own time and cost to help our fellow creatures get through a rough patch. Now this was also a man who farmed, trapped, hunted and shot troublesome animals too but who had immense reverence and compassion for his fellow beings with whom he shared his land.
