A rising tide evicts all Democrats;
If we’re seriously worried about flooding from higher sea levels, then we want to make sure that areas that will be flooded in the future won’t be developed now. We want to limit the investment in buildings that will be swamped, and we want to limit the number of people who’ll have to move. And we want to encourage people who live in those areas now to move away in the near future, before they’re flooded.
How do we do that? Well, we could do a lot of things: Limit construction in lower-lying coastal areas, ban rebuilding after hurricane damage, etc. But probably the favorite tool of politicians out to regulate behavior is to tax people for doing things the politicians don’t like. So that’s my proposal: Tax the blue zones. That is, put a large and steeply-increasing tax on property located in areas scientists say are likely to be flooded because of global warming.

And then what? Having allowed the thin edge of the wedge, taxing people because of the risk of where they are located, the next tax is in the Midwestern Great Plains where they have thousands of tornados every year.
Taxation is a two-edged sword. Government is Theft. Starve the government, lower taxes for all.
If you want to discourage people from living in hurricane or flood zones, then you simply have to end federally subsidized flood “insurance” which isn’t really insurance at all.
I’ve seen a lot of ocean. Why doesn’t it look any higher than it used to be? If we are being inundated, shouldn’t our toes start getting wet at some point?
You are missing the point. A lot of very lefty AGW believers own seafront property, and would be highly annoyed by such a tax, because, in their heart of hearts, they know its a pile of crap.
“You are missing the point.”
Does the term ‘precedent’ mean anything to you? How about the phrase ‘unintended consequence’?
This taxation proposal is clearly insane.
What needs to happen is trillions be spent putting shore front property on stilts. That would be sensible, and very Liberal.
First tax the living hell out of the lefty seaside dweller then threaten confiscation under the guise of eminent domain! That will make them see the truth! But first you need a conservative majority…..uhh…..never mind.
Nonsense. I find it a very modest proposal.
Canada can sell all the wood for stilts, that they may need….
A win-win!
I’m buying futures in ARK sales/building
I guess all gument properties will be exempt. And Obozo/Muchelle., will have not thought of lowland/waterfront retirement homes.
How about a giant betting pool on when climatechangeglobalwarmingwhatever will flood any given area. If there’s an over/under, I’ll take the under.
Interestingly, most celebrity global warming zealots (Al Gore for example) just happen to own prime waterfront real-estate.
Yep, been advocating this way of looking at it for a while.
Most structures (homes, commercial, infrastructure, whatever) have a design life of 70-100 years. Which is about the same time scale for the projected sea-rise, right?
So a managed retreat, allowing current owners to wear out their buildings and recover their capital investment, makes sense. Tell everybody, now, that there will be no more building / renovation / development within, say, the half-metre-rise redzone beyond 2045, and that Gubmint / municipal services (water, sewerage, waste collection, etc) are not guaranteed inside the zone beyond then.
Basicly, managed planning-blight.
And if it turns out that the sea hasn’t risen much by 2045, just repeal the measures and let people get on with it.
We realy need some flods in certian areas like the UN(Wash it all away into the Ocean)Washington away Obama)and in Tennesee(wash Away Hot Air Al Gore)plus David Suzuki and those annoying twats from Greenpeace
I will believe in catastrophic sea level rise as soon as I see all the ULTRA RICH Hollywood Leftist Elites selling their beachfront Malibu properties for pennies on the dollar … NOT Happening Now … Not EVER Gonna Happen. smeh !
the oceans will not rise. if a storm causes damage it will be storm damage as it has been for thousands of years. there is not sufficient water in the form of ice to raise the oceans to a dangerous level, in fact I doubt that the evaporation cycle could produce more moisture than is currently being produced. where is the water going to come from to fulfill these doomsayers prophesies?
old white guy….bang on. But not to worry. The new King Turdeau will save us all. Hehe.
Really? You think that is fair? Shouldn’t ALL people have EQUAL opportunity to live there? Then you’ll set up zones where only the 1% can afford to live there. That is what the government is there to stop.
I wonder how many of these crack-pots saw Kevin Cosners dumb movie WATERWORLD watching him swim dolphin style and making himself look like a total baffoon
