David Akin breaks down Justin Trudeau’s election promise to add $26.1 billion to the national debt.
40 Replies to “Let’s get fiscal”
I’m sure parents will love Trudeau’s elimination of child benefit plans.
Its not very detailed.
I have a problem with the Liberals using the dollars from Conservative plans that are not yet in play as a revenue source.
If the Conservatives had promised that on Nov.1st they would give everyone named Walter a million dollars, but because the Libs were elected that would not happen … how does that become ‘new revenue’ ?
And when did leaving money in the pocket of those who earned it become a bad thing ?
The Liberal party is a socialist party.
So what if the Liberals’ promises will cost an additional $26.1 billion if, Heaven forbid, they form government. The government is paying for it so it’s free. Right?
One might be surprised at the number of liv that think that way.
So we take billions out of the economy through tax increases, throw billions more at Liberal projects (remember Adscam???) and run up more debt for our children to pay for. The net effect — lost jobs, wealth and investment fleeing the country and a deep recession. I’m not sure that meets anyone’s idea of sound economic management.
Don’t forget they plan on legalizing and selling marijuana maybe they figure on making a lot of money.
Not so fast O, not ALL parents will suffer that fate, just those evil rich productive people will be removed from the list, whomever they might be.

Two things:
First – the basic math doesn’t work – Spending 146.5 more and bringing in 108.5 more means a budget deficit of 38 Billion. One can only make the assumption here that they KNOW that the federal government is in surplus and are counting on more of it.
Second – they aren’t taking interest on the extra debt into account. Granted, interest on an extra 10 Billion per year is chump change, but it’s still got to be accounted for.
I’ll grow my own, thanks.
Not to worry, the budget will balance itself.
Those terrible one percenters are only giving up 2 billion
Justine’s money is free from taxation as it is in a family trust. Think Eatons etc. Income is taxable , accumulated wealth is not
Justin is a piker.
A real socialist like Barack Obama has run up almost $10 TRILLION in US Debt.
Of course Obama had a lot of help from his fellow free-spending Democrats and feckless establishment Republicans like Crybaby Boehner and Mitch “Turtle” McConnell.
Remember Justin is merely the front man for the LPC/Liberal Party Cabal. He’s like Jethro Bodine of the Beverley Hillbillies,he doesn’t know how to “cypher”. We had proof of that yesterday, the Butt Liberal Party had the tired old duo of Goodale and McCallum out giving us the “plan” while Justin rested his poor overworked brain a rest.
I’m sure few seniors will turn away from them in droves, pension income splitting is big for them, ditto middle class parents. Of course they’ve already, through their Front Man Justin, insulted small business people. For the Liberal Cabal to say they’re for the middle class they have a poor way of showing it.
I’m gland this is a lng campaign, it separates the wheat from the chaff.
S’cuse the typos, too speedy, too early!
Mr. Akins’s column, filed yesterday, is here (it makes a clear case against Liberal profligacy): http://www.edmontonsun.com/2015/09/26/liberals-offer-a-clear-choice-deficits-for-an-economy-already-growing
It is a pollyannaish delusion to believe that this particular iteration of the Liberal Party of Canada would ever hold to this so-called “plan”. Disregarding the Paul Martin, Jr. interlude, which was forced on the Chretien government by the financial markets, the default position of Liberals in Canada since 1968 has been “deficits, deficits and more deficits”.
Heck, all one has to do is look at Dalton McGuinty and his financially illiterate “child of Frankenstein”-esque successor, who even promised in 2003 not to run deficits or raise taxes. Any questions?
But let’s for a moment take them at their word, and pretend that they’ll increase program spending for each of the next four years by $36 billion over current annual levels, and then bring the budget back into balance at the end of the period of time.
Stephen Harper has cut federal taxes by close to $36 billion per year since taking office. So, what the Liberals are proposing, at the very best, is to roll-back the Harper tax cuts and restore taxation levels to those existing in 2005-2006.
Who wants to live with that prospect?
Lets hope the Conservative candidates are getting this message out as they campaign, it’s a bread and butter issue that will affect us all.
Listening to the Liberal financial brains yesterday tells us they’re not concerned at all about the middle class, the ones they have Trudeau emoting about, those most affected by their high taxes. Either they don’t get it or they arrogantly think we don’t get it.
The Wynne Disaster called Ontario should be “exhibit A” for Liberal economics, yesterday the the federal Liberal Cabal proved they’re on the same track.
What really has changed over the years? As much as I detested Mulroney he at least tried to rein in government spending. Conservatives are the only party that try. Voters succumb to progressive promises because they really have nothing to judge those promises on. Many consider this to be intellectual laziness.
Canada has been living in a bit of a paradise for more than a decade as materials like oil were bid up through China demand. Demographics, technology and the China rebalancing are now ushering a sustained period of deflation. Where will the revenue come from to replace this trend?
The biggest threat to the Canadian economy will be technology. Not only will more be built with less but it will all be incredibly cheaper. The whole economic basis for Canada built on the industrialization of Ontario is in tatters and will not recover.
Yes the 100’s of billions $’s sent to central Canada is very likely lost. Again, the assumption that the USA will keep NAFTA when push comes to shove is also likely wishful thing.
As much as most Canadians like to think we are the equivalent of enlightened Americans we are not the USA. The American economy is far more resilient and at the end of the day adds value and is not a price taker like Canada. As much as progressives like the Dippers and the Liebels simply think that they are smarter and that they can spend their way to prosperity the likelihood is that they will accelerate the spiral downward.
Being conservative with government finances is more of a national security issue than sending war planes to Iraq and Syria. As much as I might think their is a Muslim threat to Canada nothing will split this country apart faster than the massive loss of revenue which I anticipate.
My ramblings mean nothing as the more serious debate issues are Turdeau’s hair, Mulchair’s fake smile or Harper’s weight problem.
Oh, you forgot one, the activist inspired face covering escapade. Of course it backfired, majority of Canadians agree with PM Harper’s Government on this one, people should show their face to swear allegiance of Canada.
How did they get McCallum away from the bottle of scotch to do the news conference?
Well my “fair share” will result in an absolute minimalist personal and household spending along with a freeze on ALL political and charitable donations.
Whatever they take from the so called “wealthy” only hurts the unemployed and working poor in the long run.
My favorite line now in Alberta when approached by street charities is, “you’ll need to go get mine from Rachel Nutley, she’s already taken my charitable donation and promised it to you”
C’mon now,McCallum was allegedly once over served the vino when at his Mother’s for dinner, it wasn’t his fault he was blathered and an airline refused to let him board, so let’s be fair!
I had a good chuckle when I heard that there would be a $1 billion surplus after 4 years.
For two reasons:
The typical comical precision in so much government twaddle (no seatbelt fine $167 in BC: not $160 or $170 — sounds like they really REALLY studied the issue).
That three years of deficits followed by a tiny surplus is thought to be fiscal probity.
As one surplus in 8 years of Con rule is too, to be fair.
And of course to an anti-central planning libertarian, the word PLAN out of a pol’s mouth is always a knee-slapper. I struggle to understand how they can keep a straight face when using the P-word.
I saw part of an interview with JT where he was actually grilled by the interviewer. He repeatedly chastised the Semi-gloss Pony because, apparently, the Libs declared no media access for 3 days, starting the day the LPC finally released some fiscal numbers.
JT’s response…. Oh, I didn’t realize that, you guys are more aware of my schedule than I am(paraphrasing).
I am guessing that they need the time to read reaction and then prepare JT with some appropriate talking/counterpoints. 3 days ain’t going to be near enough, guys.
Justy is trying to sound like he IS the problem solver, building transit everywhere and fixing traffic congestion. His plan is so much swiss cheese.
It will be dependent on cost-sharing with the provinces, as per typical funding plans.
These plans will ONLY be implemented in the largest urban centers, Van, TO and Monreeyal. These are the ONLY areas the Liberals care about, its vote rich territory, and those rural types are just CPC knuckledraggers anyways, pay no attention to those neanderthals.
The Liberals truly are the Pandering party, its a skill they’ve owned forever.
If The latest empty wig running the LPC follows the tradition of the past 3 Librano fed regimes, numbers given at election are meaningless – remember the $2 billion over-budget long gun registry That was supposed to cost 2 Million $ ??
Now the silly little twit running the fed-libs wants to repeat the Ont-Lib fiscal disaster- E-health, Orange, green energy, and all the other spending disasters of the McChimpy-Grymm regime. When will voters realive Liberals WASTE tax revenue then borrow to WASTE more- and when all these spendthrift liberals are retired in tropical exclusive beach condos, your grand children will be paying their debt loads.

“His plan is so much swiss cheese.”
His plan is to screw over married homemakers that rely on spousal RRSP contributions while raising their own children.
Turdeau HATES “Stay at Home Moms” and their well adjusted children.
We need to factor in the Wynne influence, she’s publicly declared her support for Justin and the Liberal Cabal which comes with expectations should they win power.
Speaking of Wynne, is it legal for her to be running ads for her controversial pension scheme and her controversial sex education program? It’s getting close to being over the line. especially during a Federal election campaign.
If Ontario voters haven’t yet had a wake up call there’s not much hope for the province over the next decade. Three more years of the McGuinty cum Wynne disaster will be a major cleanup for whoever succeeds it.
I always get a laugh out of how liberals seem to think that taxation/spending are linear functions. They seem to be oblivious to the effect their policies will have on the economy. Yes you might get that much revenue the first year but the second year when all the capital leaves the country will have a lower return. It has been shown under Reagan, Klein and Harper that the way to raise government revenue is to cut taxes.
Anyone who believes “transit” solves traffic grid lock hasn’t driven in Vancouver.
Federal Liberals: big government/bureaucracy, big union, big climate change rent seeking, crony capitalism, a la the ON Wynne government
Federal NDP, big union, big government/bureaucracy, massive climate change rent seeking, hostility to business, a la the Notley AB government.
AKA, “transforming capitalism” from oil worker to social worker, with the resultant credit downgrades. From Gunter’s article:
“Outwardly, Notley and her cabinet give the impression of being ideologically reasonable and fiscally prudent, just as federal New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair is doing. But it’s a mask. It’s socialism with a smiling face.”
Now that Notley’s provincial Dippers are safely in power, their radical side is beginning to show. In their first three months in office, the Notley Crue announced higher taxes for the upper-middle-class, a 20% spike in business taxes, a 33% increase in emissions taxes, $1 billion more in health and education spending (already among the highest in Canada), a willingness to let environmentalists dictate oilsands policy and an unwillingness to push pipeline construction with other provinces… the new government is considering a carbon tax, higher gasoline taxes and much higher vehicle registration fees to encourage Albertans to get out of their personal vehicles – or at least to buy smaller ones and drive them less.”
And this gem:
“It is also proving that, like the NDP everywhere, it cannot be satisfied. No amount of tax dollars will ever be enough. Finally, this week, Notley’s government went behind closed doors at a legislature committee to approve a 7.25% pay raise for senior civil servants earning between $243,000 a year and $272,000. And it is considering bigtime pay raises for all of the provinces 200,000 public-sector workers.”
What, it wasn’t in their platform? Is it not crystal clear it doesn’t matter what is in the progressive platforms, they’ll never raise the “anticipated” revenues from the “rich,” so the tax bar must be set lower and lower?
Question: if making over $200,000 is socially unjust and unfair to society, why are any politicians or bureaucrats accepting this obscene pay? Because only business people are “unjust,” and progressive rent seekers are hypocrites posing as virtuous politicians & “activists.”
Harper should go after these idiot premiers big time as living proof of what progressives have in store for the beleaguered taxpayer, especially the poor for whom watermelon policies are the most damaging; that’s why they only want to talk about the “middle class.”

The money raised by the federal government through putting a price on carbon would go to the provinces for reinvestment in additional measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, he said.”
