If this is not the best possible illustration that Central Planning always fails, I can’t imagine what would be. Mosquito nets used for fishing. Obviously! Because while dying of Malaria some day is a problem, dying of starvation TODAY is a bigger one.
Except the -actual- problem is not malaria or starvation, its a population that has to get by eating bugs because that’s all there is to eat. Nobody seems interested in that part. Probably because there’s no money in it.
Also, I find it -very- interesting that this is the first I’ve ever heard that charity mosquito nets get used for fishing. One would think this massive public health fail would be made known immediately to both charity managers and donors, if the goal of charity was to help the Africans.
But that’s not the goal, of course. The goal is to Feeeeeel Better About Yourself cheaply by giving money to charity, and the charities are all about keeping those donations rolling in. Africans are a bunch of recalcitrant bastiges who invariably foil every effort to help them, so who cares what happens to them anyway. Just the feeeeeelz that matters.
