Despite the political pressure, the U.S. Army should court martial the b@st@rd. If the president then uses his power to pardon him, that will be a clear signal to toss Obama from office. I never understood the fact that the U.S. president can over-rule a court of law – even the Queen can’t do that.

The fact is, Bergdahl is only guilty of Absence Without Leave (AWOL)…. unless he ADMITS his intention was in fact to desert. He may well have been delusional and believed he could actually “talk” to the Taliban (that would be the definition of delusional. He could have inherited that trait from his father.) In any event, clearly he is not a “hero”. And the politics and actual repercussions of his exchange are not going to bode well for the Democrats in the coming elections….. which is just fine by me. The incompetence of Team Obama is just incredible!!
Except for the part about stripping Bergdahl of benefits. So many better men have had to suffer under the care of the VA, why should he escape?

Actually the Obummer soviets have been reinforcing the “narrative” with staged theatrics for 2 terms now. By staging crisis-like events then having officialdom run about like frightened poultry in the aftermath he has managed to literally keep the commie narrative in virtually every news cycle for the past 7 years.

Accepting the return Berghdal was the Obama regime’s last best chance for an excuse for releasing those five senior Taliban leaders.

An admission (of intent not to return) is not a prerequisite for a conviction for desertion. A conviction could be registered on circumstantial evidence alone.
I always thought that the book of revelations was the result of some guy, 3000 years ago, finding an Amanita Mascara mushroom and after ingesting at least half of it, writing his thesis..about armageddon…no, not the one about a mouse and a couple of guys with an ABS tube…the other one – in the Bible.

@Oz: Yes, AWOL. I am a veteran of Viet Nam. Guys left the post to get a little when they were off duty. It was a little dangerous but not excessively so (depending on where they were stationed). If they were caught, it was AWOL not desertion. The intent to stay gone has to be shown/demonstrated (like fleeing to Canada for example). And by the way, the U.S. Marine in the Mexican prison is AWOL. He’s not a deserter.
The story I’ve gotten so far is that Bergdahl deserted after seeing some war stuff. Hated the US military, hated the war, had a crisis of conscience if you like, and walked away from it all. Decided to work with the local people to make up for all the bad the US military did to them. Like a penance.
See, if you say it that way, Bergdahl is a hero. A true blue hero to the Left. The Left has been screaming that America is all that’s bad in the world since Vietnam, and now they need a hero to distract from the political trouble at home, and here he is. Bowe Bergdahl, a new Sgt. York for a new, more enlightened century.
They don’t get that he did anything wrong, and they don’t care anyway. He’s their guy, they’re doubling down. All the connected people are going to line up behind this story, Bergdahl’s a hero. This is how they’re going to play it, and woe unto anybody in the way.
All the guys in Bergdahl’s unit still serving are going to get posted to Antarctica and buried there, plus smeared. Anybody who knows anything about it will get buried along with them, plus smeared. Reputations and careers are going to be destroyed wholesale, in job lots. Generals will be retired, will resign, will be demoted sideways into the Army Department of Used Tires.
Because why? BECAUSE THERE’S ONLY FIVE MONTHS UNTIL NOVEMBER. That’s why. Cornered rats fight the hardest.

I realise I only know what the press are reporting they heard from people who either read official reports or heard it from someone else, and my service wasn’t in the U.S. Army so I don’t assume the regulations are exactly as they were in my army. But it appears to me they are saying Bergdahl left his position while posted as a sentry in a forward operating area. Regardless of whether his apparent intent was desertion or to be merely AWOL, that would be enough to get a death sentence in a lot of armies.
Consider that the teleprompter has been reluctant to provide hard evidence of his actual birth may be because he is actually related to a certain third place federal political party…..well he certainly is demonstrating the same “astute” level of judgment.

I was drinking with a couple of British soldiers from 2 Para in a downtown Calgary pub in 1980 and they told me a story about their recent deployment to Cyprus where they were peacekeeping between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots at the time. As seen through their binocs, the story was that a young Turkish soldier had fallen asleep at his sentry post and when his superior came along and found him asleep, the superior didn’t even bother to wake him up to put the pistol round in his head.
All the facts are not in on Berghadl. Did he desert or go for a walk? Was he lured in some way? Let that investigation take its course, hopefully but not realistically, without presidential interference.
Two facts remain. The price for his release was too high and will likely result in more suffering. Secondly, the “swift boating” allegations turned out to be more or less accurate as I recall.
