“As internal CBC documents reveal…”

Jim Henshaw;

Whenever I discuss CBC TV, it’s with the same opinion I’ve held my entire career, that they uncontrollably stumble from crisis to crisis, always appearing neither certain of their creative direction nor their mandated priorities while repeatedly “re-imagining” some nebulous brighter future.
But there’s always somebody (often entire movements of somebodies) insisting this is our single most important cultural institution, an essential we must trust to knit the country together. And that has always given me pause.
But now, I know I’ve been right. This week I came across a document that proves beyond any doubt that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is managed by Buffoons.

  1. Cue Friends of the CBC to say
    “Tell Canadian Stories our way”
    Whatever that means.

  2. They certainly are into reporting politics their way. Even their satire is liberal/left bent.

  3. As I read it, the CBC made a pitch for the rights to broadcast NHL games based on the advantages to the CBC. And they thought that the NHL was going to make a decision based on what was to the CBC’s advantage, rather than the NHL’s? That sort of thing isn’t uncommon among, say, college seniors looking for employment (I’d have to say that I thought that way, myself), but it should be obvious to somebody who has had to work for a living for a while that people do things based on what they think will be advantageous to them; whether it is also advantageous to the other party is irrelevant.

When I lived in Canada, I always thought of it as being confederation of 9 provinces, 1 semi-autonomous region, a few territories, a bewildering number of “nations”, all cobbled and held together by a string of welfare offices and government-run liquor stores.

  5. I’m surprised that it has taken a member of the “illuminati” so long to finally see the light concerning the management at CBC, ‘buffoons’ does not adequately describe the ‘progressive morons’ that have been in charge at the CBC since the “Eighties”. Canadians that still watch the CBC do not realize that when these morons ceded the HNIC theme, the writing was on the wall. These ‘champions’ of national communications in Canada inherited a national treasure and squandered it because they thought they they were entitled. If you are not willing to fight for what you believe in, then as sure as night follows day you will lose it. As Mitchner, I think once once put it, “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations”. When you lose your balance you will stumble and fall, the left leaning “intelligentsia” that have managed the CBC for the last three decades have stumbled and are now on their knees, unless they can regain their balance and begin delivering unbiased programing instead of propaganda they deserve to fail and lose the tax funded subsidy that has kept them on life support for the last decade.

  6. Stephen Harper doesn’t have to shoot CBC in the head; they have done a fine job of castrating themselves, and will bleed out soon enough. Wait a year or two, and when CBC is in extremis, Harper will ride in on a white horse, and “save” it, but ensure in the process that its political orientation is changed for the better.

  7. When it comes to the CBC, Harper is a buffoon. You’re assuming that the PCs are going to retain power. If the lefties come to power the CBC will rise again. Stupid Harper should have killed the CBC a long time ago so it couldn’t be resuscitated.

  8. We should have the NHL broadcast rights forever because we deserve it.
    We’re entitled to our entitlements.

  9. Well said. Three decades ago was about when I realized that their claim to being objective was openly being replaced by overt bias. I suffered that for a few years by picking and choosing what I watched or listened to, but finally could not stand to vomit that much and weaned myself totally.
Doug, PM Harper is making the same mistake with scrapping all of Bill C-68. A possible Liberal government, as you suggest, will resuscitate the CBC and reimpose the firearm registration and by Trudeau’s own mouth make it even more draconian. Our local MP told me that there are too many “progressive” conservatives from the east and Fraser valley that balk at reducing CBC even further and scrapping Bill C-68
His western base will be sacrificed to appease the progressives.

  10. HNIC was the Radio Property of an Independent Radio Station owned by the Toronto Star.. Foster Hewitt didn’t work (contract)for the CBC until the television production. The CBC, and for-runner, were the National “distributer” of radio programming.
Foster Hewitt was a partner with Eaton & Bassett in Baton Broadcasting (CTV)
My point is that the CBC was not a pioneer of HNIC

  11. Harper did not run on abolishing the CBC so he will not do so. Unlike the other parties he more or less sticks to implementing his promises. The political calculus in defunding the CBC is whether it is an electoral winner or loser for the Conservatives in the next election.

  12. Defund the CBC of its annual BILLION dollars and funnel that money to the Osoyoos First Nations Band of Clarence Louie who in turn will by instinct, invest it and ultimately change the “entitlement” mentality of other willing First Nations into productive Canadians!!
NO MORE, “IDLE NO MORE SHIT!

  13. I’d like to see the Prez of CBC on “Dragon’s Den”, so he can present the case for preserving this “national treasure”.
It would be just lovely to hear Kevin O’Leary and the rest refuse to back this corporation without a business plan, goals,or a clue.
The CBC is a conglomeration of beggars in expensive suits, welfare for the well-connected. Watched Evan Solomon yesterday for a few minutes and had to restrain myself from attacking the TV set.
Harper won’t do much to correct the situation, and PM Justin will reverse anything negative he does anyway.
Like “the poor”, the CBC will always be with us.

  14. The CBC is going to have a plan in 2018 for how to replace its lost revenue.
    Great.
Just don’t contact me with your stupidass plan to tax me further to make up for your lost revenue. All my tax paid is “lost revenue” and the first thing I look for when I see a car stuck in the ditch is a sign that the driver works for the gov’t.

  15. There is no upside for Harper to do anything more for the cbc. Neither cutting it’s budget further or giving it additional funding.
With the exception of HNIC, what demographic watches cbc tv? 50+, 60+? This group represents the law of diminished returns. It is not sustainable over the long haul.
Even under liberals the writing has been on the wall. They pay lip service to the cbc but are not enthusiastic supporters. They will not want it to disappear though.
In the 1000 channel marketplace the cbc has become increasingly irrelevant. I suspect that trend will continue. Their business model doesn’t relate to the 21 century.

  16. The CBC. Waiting for the second coming of Joseph Goebbels .
Stuck with Baghdad Bob. Run by the many socialist clowns who took over by infiltration, or modern education.
To my surprise the Conservatives are slowly this hodge podge of meaningless waste of money on old socialist tropes.
They have tied a string’s around the scrotum of the organization by giving less money.
Now we wait for there balls to wither & fall off.

  17. CBC can fill in with reruns of rainbow country , Austin Willis this is the law, junior forest rangers, and beachcombers, followed by wind up my arse and celebrity chefs stocked by out of work CBC actors
The cupboard after 50 years is sparse

  18. Great suggestion there Joe. Louie would make good use of it.
Revnant Dream, that would be their balls. 😉
    Cal2, excellent choices.
In the words of the CBC’s great mentor, Lenin, hopefully the CBC goes into the dustbin of history.
