Last month, the European Commission put forward a proposal to set a 2030 target of 40% emissions reduction from 1990 levels. It wanted a quick agreement, by the June European Council at the latest, so that the EU could go to a UN summit in September with a pledge for a globally binding UN deal.
A new global deal is supposed to be agreed in Paris at the end of 2015. An early pledge by Europe could spur other global powers to come forward with pledges in the following months, increasing the chances of a successful outcome in Paris next year.
But today’s discussions were dominated by the issue of energy independence, and leaders who had pushed for early agreement emerged from the Council acknowledging that the plan for agreement in June is now impossible. “At the European level we are facing a tough discussion,” said Werner Faymann, the chancellor of Austria. “For that reason we’ve agreed to discuss in June and to set a line by October for next year’s [Paris] conference.”

I watched an interview in China, and they asked why are you building coal plants, like every week, don’t you know they pollute. The guy said that we want the cheapest electricity possible. So we can build you, your solar panels, that cost you 100 times more for electricity, and bankrupt your country. You will have no jobs, and electrical rates 100 times more. He even said that while you guys are so stupid, we are putting like 90 percent of this money back into our military. We plan on taking down America and the western style values, once and for all. This is all been planned and just doesn’t happen over night.
1st off, why do we have free trade with them, Canada lost 33,000 manufacturing jobs last year. You cannot compete with slave labor and no environmental standards. I think the auto pact was a great example of what can be done. They mandated that a certain amount had to be made here, even ford said they would of left years ago if it wasn’t for the pact. Harpo in his stupidity, is out there signing more free trade deals, so what little jobs we have left will be all gone.Don’t get me started on his balanced budget, as he did it through massive money printing, the likes of which we have never seen.
Please note these are the same self satisfied Kyoto drones who repudiated Canada for having the foresight to drop out of a costly plan which has no net gain for its intended goal.
I have mostly disdain for Harper’s timid conduct where acting like a true conservative leader is concerned but dumping the Kyoto farce was the right thing to do and a bold move at the time. We are one of the better off G20 economies because of it. This will be Harper’s unsung legacy.
– Until the hair style leading the Librano cartel re-ups us to funnel money to his uncle Mo in China through a carbon tax trade disadvantage.
– we all know this Mini Me Truedough librano cartel will soon be raping and pillaging the nation like seasoned up jackals in a hen coup, they will be in league with their Onterrible cartel, the target will be Alberta and the remaining liquid industrial base in Ont. It will be all-out pillage in a attempt to move money from the only sources of wealth creation to buy off voters in the economies they have destroyed (Ont/Que) – GHG and Co2 junk science will be the excuse.
– It really is time to get your savings and tangible assets outta Dodge, because if the Liberals don’t steal it immediately, the next regime will when they try to patch up the debt they leave. The next 2 decades this will not be a very friendly place for retiring on a fixed income. Lottsa warm places want your business, why stay in a cold klepto-commie back water and be plundered in your reclining years.
Energy independence indeed!
President Putin has now pretty much crapped all over the EU emission reduction fantasy. It might well be that the greatest boost to shaking off the West’s eco-cult fixation came from the Russian annexation of Crimea.
Proving again that there is but one unfailing law in human affairs: the law of unintended consequences.
Who else will buy our goods? India? Indonesia? Russia? Our one trick pony south of the 49th is BROKE and trying to drag us down with them.
Our manufacturing was outsourced long ago for lower cost jurisdictions, because our red tape, regulation, energy and labor costs are too high to fund our high cost lifestyle at home. People have come to expect that $600,000 home, $40,0000 car, EI, OAS, CPP, “free” Health Care, as their right. And you all want it at Walmart prices, manufactured in China. They are the only ones that can supply you with what you want. Go “organize” a labor union over there, sport. See what that gets you. You refuse to pay the real costs, if anything made in Canada costs more than what you can shell out for on your entitled salary at Walmart, because you feel that you are entitled to an “affordable” house/condo, whatever.
Your productivity at your job doesn’t even match what these third world sh%tholes can do for less. Just the stupidity on energy costs here will drive your job to anywhere offshore, unless you work in resource industries. We don’t have the population to buy what we do produce, so we have to export. That includes food production. I’ll gladly trade pork bellies to buy stuff made elsewhere, that we don’t produce efficiently, or cheaper here. They are eating Alberta beef in Japan as I write, scarfing noodles from western grain in China and burning (hopefully) gasoline in their Mercedes made from Canadian crude that we have more of than we can ever consume on an annual basis here at home. F-150’s, not so much. Too expensive, too much fuel use in comparison to similar trucks made for their market in other countries.
You want to compete with these guys? Make something that they want to buy from you. Life isn’t a bowl of cherries, you have to work a lot harder than you are now, to get the stuff you want at an attractive price point. We don’t do that here any more. We are fat, lazy and complacent slugs and it shows.
I just have to agree with poab.
“You cannot compete with slave labor and no environmental standards.”
They can’t compete with our red tape, regulation and environmental standards, so they’ll undercut your prissy, self important PCness, so that they can feed their kids. If they could they would and then you’ll pay through the nose for what they produce. They still won’t buy your over priced, fuel guzzling F-150 and they won’t even let you import that thing into their country to knock one of theirs off their assembly line. Make something that they need or want that they don’t or can’t.
Economics rules, sport, for everyone. Corporations, whether in China, India, Russia, USA or this country, they don’t exist to “provide jobs” just because. They only provide an opportunity for a job, if you don’t impact their bottom line to produce a product for local or foreign consumption that has an attractive price point to keep that factory open. Exceed that and that factory and your job will have legs.
You can cook up all the trade distorting rules you want, here at home and elect governments to force people and corporations to “coexist” and buy overpriced, shoddy goods and services, without taking into account the economics of doing so, but it’s all a shell game with bankruptcy the end result, both corporately and nationally.
While they go back to the drawing board to figure out how to take the next run at the money, these daring Euro idiots want you to PLEASE KEEP THE GAS AND OIL COMING …. or we will freeze in the dark. Hypocrisy at it’s best. Shouldn’t those monolithic pieces of crap windmills be replacing all that filthy oil and gas energy by now? No and it never will. But we will experience a plaque of pestilence due to the deaths of millions and millions of pest eating birds …. in those windmill slice and dice machines.
Remember when they were killing all the cats in England and other parts of Europe because they believed that cats worked for witches? Ya … it’s that stupid … well … next thing you know there is a plague of Bubonic carrying rats running all over the place and killing a third of the population …. then all of a sudden, cats became a protected species ….. once a smarter person figured out what was going on. Cat’s saved their stupid asses.
I don’t care how intelligent some people are alleged to be, but when they surrender whatever brains they have to a F*cking nebulous believe … then they qualify as STOOPID!
Why is it stupid? Because it is stupid to impoverish your country on a belief that the sky if falling. I will need to see pieces of the moon and stars lying around my yard before I buy into the Euro lunacy … or the Ontario lunacy for that matter.
The greenies can snivel all they want, but I’m making two standing bets right here.
1. There will be no Euro agreement on any binding quantitative commitments by the EU this summer.
2. There will be no binding quantitative commitments to emission cuts at the December 2015 COP conference in Paris.
Faymann can bleat about tough discussions and deadlines all he wants. Truth is, this international treaty conference has been in complete free-fall ever since it froze to death in Copenhagen in 2009.
Boy, you are POed, and life is a bowl of cherries they just happen to be chokecherries.
I check labels before I buy things and try to avoid buying anything made in China. And I would never knowingly eat anything from China because it’s most likely toxic.
We farmed for over 30 years and always seemed to have to subsidize the farm with other jobs. No one wants to pay much for food but will throw money away on garbage made in China.
Here we go again, the right wing clap trap, wages are too high, red tape, taxes.
I was in a board room of a company that closed and moved to China. We were told that if the employees paid them, they still couldn’t compete. China’s government buys the steel in such bulk, and at such a cheep rate, that we are done for. The funny thing is at the time, it was our steel, made here. Not to mention they use slave labor, political prisoners, you know the guys that want democracy, and pollution is a non issue. If you lower the tax rate to zero, we still couldn’t compete, pay the employees nothing, same thing, we need to get real.
Problem is, ‘the children’ have been successfully indoctrinated. Public schools and universities are incubators for the ‘sustainability’ cult. One local teacher had a bright student (around 12 years old) do her science project on producing energy from citrus fruits. I kid you not.
Agree with JJM.
Putin killed this one. The last thing that the EU wants to worry about now is how to install windmills and solar panels and such in the face enemy. The enemy threatens with frozen, starving people in winter, which is probably a lot more effective than bullets and tanks. Not as quick, but a whole lot cheaper.
“I don’t care how intelligent some people are alleged to be, but when they surrender whatever brains they have to a F*cking nebulous believe … then they qualify as STOOPID!” OFAYCAT
But what better way to keep the stupid pLL from actually achieving anything. The majority of folks will never fall for the nonsense of NON-Scientific Cults, unless they actually produce measurable results. Platitudes of sustainability are worthless blather that the stupid don’t even understand.
It was Russia, China & Brazil that scuttled the Kyoto 2009 accord that the world economists expected to re-define & distribute the works of man. The new beads (wampum) of wealth. The failed theory of the wishful Economists
Yes WWIII is about to begin for all the wrong reasons.
Eurocrites!
The Europeans were all for Kyoto when it simply meant shutting down all the inefficient plants that had been incorporated from Eastern Europe in the early 1990s. This had already happened in Europe. Canada, under the Pink Floyd-Allan Rock Axis of naivete, agreed to the European time lines thinking Kyoto was an environmental accord. It wasn’t, for the Europeans it has always been an economic accord, and now that the economics are bad for Europe they will not do it.
Eurocrites!
