I consider my ethical standards to be quite high so I should be able to expect the politicians I elect to at least approach my personal level. I know I’m living in a fantasy world but the lower your expectations for this crowd then the less effort they will put into reaching this level.
I regularly meet a lot of people whose standards are way higher than any politician,of all ages.
Maybe it’s the nature of the business that politics attracts a disproportionate number of sociopaths ,whores, grifters, gandy dancers,blackguards, and a host of other pejoratives come to life, and we sure as hell don’t deserve them.
I do my research on every candidate,in the case of locals, ask about them from long time acquaintances. Then I study the Party’s platform,and repeatedly visit the websites of their elected Members.
Then I attend Town Hall meetings, raise questions, E-mail and phone my MLA and MP,read the local and National media,to try to get a handle of who the hell I’m voting for.
I suppose I’m what’s called a “political junkie”.
And in spite of all my research and activities, the person I voted for can still go to Victoria or Ottawa and represent only himself.

Precisely. A cursory examination of The Dildo’s background would have revealed ‘the’ stereotypical slimy politician who would do anything, say anything to acquire and retain power.
But, not only did the stupid public (and the dumber press) ignore that initial step, they elected this turd THREE times!

So, it is quite apparent that anyone who voted for McGuinty the second and third times round, attaches absolutely no value to truth and honesty.
Most politicians are lawyers. You get what you vote for.
Its why our Political class have such a soft spot for criminals.

the company i used to work for, has really pushed transparency/refusal of gifts/recuse from apparent conflict of interest.
Bollocks, there is little changed about the ethical standards of Canadians, what has changed is the Presstitutes who fawn over and bless the selective corruption of their friends.
Who choose to not cover the news and then blame the public for being uninformed.
Ontarions seem to still trust the media party, wonder if they will wise up now?

That’s because politics is a popularity contest, and ability and merit runs second place to social charisma. The majority of voters are not especially intelligent, so it’s easy for a media hyped popularity contest to select the functionality incompetent but otherwise popular people. We would have just as much luck if we let beauty pageant winners run the country.
