If one reads some history of reserves (archive stuff), for maybe fifty years or more after settlement many Indians still lived as nomads out hunting and trapping or working, returning periodically to reserves. Indian Affairs officials would report reserves almost abandoned except for a few old people. That is where residential schools came into play. Schools crushed the native culture? – sure – and everybody elses.
Iran? Now that’s kind of drastic.
