Fly “Les Cieux Amicaux”

Americans! Watch out for the language police:

Flying the bilingual skies
The Tories [Conservatives] moved to extend the grasp of the official languages commissioner on Monday when they introduced an amendment to the Air Canada Public Participation Act that would make not only Air Canada subject to official bilingualism (it always has been), but also all of its “contracted carrier partners.” Now, if you fly United Airlines – or any other carrier that has a contract to provide regional or international flights on behalf of Air Canada – you can demand the same level of bilingual service found on the main airline…

That is outrageous! Why is SDA not abuzz?

  2. New ships for the Navy and new vehicles for the Army, I’m just making a wild guess here but maybe Stevie’s a bit too busy to bother with the subtext of a minor bill that was put there to keep the frogtards happy, and will be summarily ignored and forgotten as soon as the bill passes, even if that clause makes it through Third Reading?
If this is the stupidest thing they ever do I’ll be overjoyed.

  3. What is this place? Redneck central? Geez, doesn’t take much to get you all excited… Calm down, you ‘ll get a heart attack…

  4. Ditch Air Canada we don t need them private enterprise can and has done a far better job.I would rather fly in a Sopwith Camel wearing goggles and a scarf than to be subjected to those snotty French flight attendants on Air Canada. If you speak French you are served with a smile,if you speak English you are served with a sneer.I will never fly Air Canada again and the sooner we get rid of Quebec the better off the ROC will be.

  5. “After the first lawsuit, this will be the end of code-shares for AC with US Air, United, and any other airline. This will only serve to weaken AC, and strengthen foreign (mostly US) airlines. Nose, face, cut, spite.”
Load of crock across this thread.
Code-share carriers that fly foreign flags are exempt. United, Continental, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian etc can carry Air Canada flight numbers without complying with the new ruling and the government can do diddly squat about it. Aircraft registered abroad are expempt.
Air Canada is in this unique position largely because it is a state-protected airline masquerading as a private airline. It is protected from competition, bailed out to the tune of a $1bn dollars by the Tories in 2009, protected from its own employees by the government and – the ultimate damning fact – failed to become sustainably profitable despite being a ‘private’ airline for two decades in a market where it holds a monopoly on premium cabin flying, as well as being the sole Canadian carrier with international routes.
As for strenghtening US airlines – give me a break. US airlines are bottom-of-the-barrel airlines. Like Air Canada, they pretend to be full-service airlines, while they’re really just glorified versions of Ryanair. Air Canada isn’t much better- its a slightly better version of Ryanair (nickel-and-dime for everything), albeit with the highest airfares (Cost per mile) in the developed world.
Yes, thats right, Air Canada is a loss-maker despite being able to command the highest airfares in the developed world, mostly because the presumably ‘conservative’ current government is protecting it from everything – competition, its own financial mismanagement, its own poor management and a nearly alienated workforce. Offering two languages is the least Air Canada can do in return.

  6. Air Canada has to be saved at all costs. If it disappeared, politicians would be forced to use Westjet WHICH HAS NO BUSINESS CLASS!

  7. Don’t worry, the French will be extinct in another generation , so all the outrage they display will mean nothing.
Quebec is dying, except for its Muslims. The same with France. Soon only Cajuns will be alive.

  8. Will we ever get a government with the stones to admit what is patently obvious: the trudeaupean experiment known as bilingualism is a dismal failure, 100%. As are the other trudea idiocies: multiculturalism, a “just society” and the enforced metric system.
More proof positive that liberalism fails utterly wherever and whenever it’s applied.

  9. Ça m’est égal si vous barrez les portes en français ou en anglais. // I don’t care if you lock the doors in French or in English.
I do remember one night waiting in the AA terminal at Chicago-O’Hare where an Ottawa passenger with a francophone sounding name was paged several times en anglais seulement. I don’t know if they ever talked to him or not.
