In the ongoing interest of keeping it – mostly – light for the summer, tonight’s amusement en route to the tips is a vintage, entertainment district-style “pickup bar” song. The raunchy sax and loosely-flailing, sleazy mid-tempo drums are strictly standard-issue; what makes the song a real standout is the sizzling vocal, with its unique combination of “businesslike” and “smoky.”
From the compilation album Las Vegas Grind Part 1, here’s a 1963 recording of The Vikings (I can find no biographical information on them) performing Nicotine.

Fouad Ajami, writing in the WSJ:
“It is in the nature of charisma that it rises out of thin air, out of need and distress, and then dissipates when the magic fails. The country has had its fill with a scapegoating that knows no end from a president who had vowed to break with recriminations and partisanship. The magic of 2008 can’t be recreated, and good riddance to it. Slowly, the nation has recovered its poise. There is a widespread sense of unstated embarrassment that a political majority, if only for a moment, fell for the promise of an untested redeemer—a belief alien to the temperament of this so practical and sober a nation.”
EBD- If only that realization extended to the fools swallowing the AGW horsesh!t that’s been so pervasive everywhere…. all the time!

Ozboy at The Dragon’s Dissent:
“(The argument that China leads the world in renewable energy technology investment) rings a little hollow when you consider Beijing plans to build coal-fired power stations at the equivalent rate of one Australia, per year, for the next twenty-five years. The reputed Chinese fascination with renewable energy looks at best, a very long-term fallback position; at worst, a façade.
“That’s what makes what you’re about to read even more startling. It’s a book called Low Carbon Plot, by Gou Hongyang and, as it’s freely available in China’s government-controlled bookstores, carries Beijing’s nihil obstat. No English translation is currently available, but our own China correspondent, Locusts, has translated the introduction from the original Mandarin, and (not entirely without risk to himself) has asked me to make it publicly available on this forum…”
“It’s not so much an eye-opener as it is a bombshell. If true, it shows the Chinese government as rejecting CAGW in its entirety, believing it a conspiracy between Western governments and business to protect their own way of life, at the expense of the entire developing world—in other words, 80% of the world’s population.”

There’s some interesting grind going on there EBD .. The Vikings don’t seem to have too much history, all I found was quite brief, and still no real biographical story.

I believed you featured the song “Fever” some time ago, so in my travels I came across Rita Monreno performing said song. She won an Emmy for it….

Yes, she did win an Emmy, to go along with her Tony and Oscar.
Revnant Dream – I don’t get it – is that supposed to be artistic or what? What am I supposed to glean from it? I guess it’s a matter of taste again, but I just find it pretentious nonsense, like a Leonard Cohen moment.
From Pat Buchanan’s “Putting Government First” at RCP:
“We have a situation where private sector workers in Middle America are being taxed, their children being driven ever deeper into debt to China, so government employees who have greater job security than they do, and earn more in pay and benefits than they will ever earn, can stay in Fat City.
“And folks wonder why so many Americans detest government.
“In the same week Congress came back to prevent AFSCME from taking a haircut, the Wall Street Journal reported that, in 2009, only three of 52 metro areas with over 1 million in population saw ‘net earnings and the broader measure of personal income both rise.’
“Are you surprised to learn Washington, D.C., was among the three?
“That same day, USA Today had a startling report on how, during the last decade, U.S. Government workers, like Wall Street bankers, left their fellow Americans in the dust.
“Remarkable. U.S. government workers, who enjoy the greatest job security of any Americans, now earn twice as much in pay and benefits as the average American. This is not the D.C. some of us grew up in.”

EDB…. Light and breezy for summer. The Vikings are entertaining in a smokey bar sort of way.
Here in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, Richie Hayward, drummer and co-founder of the Little Feat band just passed away.
Hayward was extra good and backed Bonnie Raitt and dozens of other big names.
Here, he often played with our extra good Pacific Disturbance R&B band and Jerry Ducette sits in as well.

I read the story in the CBC pages and then the G & M. I was not surprised at the comments in CBC (do they write those themselves and spend the next few hours thumbing themselves up?) But the comments in the G & M were a lot more realistic–and that surprised me.
Obama tried to turn this into a religious freedom issue and referred back to the Constitution. I guess the Constitution is something he can take or leave, depending on the matter at hand. A true leader would have recognized that this has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with sticking a great big thumb in the eye of the West. There would be all kinds of gestures of reconciliation that would not be so blatantly insulting.
I just don’t get Obama. It almost seems as if he’s using his mandate to destroy America. Has someone paid him off (along with the mayor of New York)? It’s hard to understand what’s going on otherwise.
With regard to Obama – remember that he and the WH at first REFUSED to comment, saying that it was a ‘local issue’. Krauthammer opined that it was a national issue.
Now, Obama comes out and approves it. As noted, he refers to the Constitution – a document that he picks up and drops at whim. It has absolutely zero, nothing, zilch to do with religion.
It has nothing to do with the freedom to practice a religion. It has to do with a specific property, a geographical location. Nothing religious about that.
This geographical location is where over 3,000 people lost their lives due to an Islamic terrorist attack. To build a monument – and a mosque is that – to Islamism on that site is an insult to those people.
Furthermore, that mosque has nothing to do with opening up Islam to others, with an attempt to be collegial – as the mosque builders declare. After all only Muslims are allowed in. Right there, the rhetoric about openness is slammed shut.
IF the building was to be set up as open to all faiths, to gender equality, to dialogue about people and faiths, – that’s a different agenda. But it’s very clear; it’s a mosque for Muslims only. It celebrates Islam.
And the imam is a radical who refuses to acknowledge the reality, the existence, of Islamic terrorism and jihadism.
So- the agenda is that basic Islamic tactic of using both terror and soft-sell insertion of sharia and Islam into a foreign territory. It’s a signal, a clear symbol, of domination and indifference to the feelings of Americans.
Compare. How would we feel if Germany were to build a museum devoted to the celebration of the Nazis at Buchenwald?
What if the Sikhs built a temple on the site of the Air India disaster?
Should Japan build a temple celebrating Japan and its wars at Pearl Harbor?
Why is Bloomberg agreeing? I strongly suspect that he’s been bought off with massive amounts of money.
Obama? He’s basically an amoral, unethical and anti-American person. I mean that.
As I’ve said elsewhere, he has no religious filiation. His years at the Rev. Wrights ‘Christian’ church were due to his wife Michelle’s attendance. And her going there had nothing to do with Christianity but to the basic themes of Wright – anti-white and anti-American. Notice that now they’ve left Chicago, they attend no church. So much for religion.
Obama’s emotional filiation to a religion is to Islam, based on, I suspect, those formative years of his life (when his narcissism also began) when he attended a Wahhabi Islam school in Indonesia. He is not himself religious for that would be to acknowledge a power higher than himself. But he has ’emotional memories’ and his nostalgia is for Islam.
Think about what Obama just declared, in this release from the WH on the beginning of Ramadan:
“These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s
role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human
beings. Ramadan is a celebration of a faith known for great diversity and
racial equality. And here in the United States, Ramadan is a reminder that
Islam has always been part of America and that American Muslims have made
extraordinary contributions to our country. ”
Islam – and its role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance? Obama SAID THIS! Is he living in some kind of virtual world? Yes.
And – what ‘extraordinary contributions have Muslims made to the US”????? Name one. Just one.
This announcement by Obama, after his first refusal to comment on a ‘local issue’ is yet another example of his arrogance, his disdain for Americans, his psychological need to dominate them, to reduce their independence, to show them that their feelings and wishes are irrelevant. His are supreme.
Obama is quite capable of taking a position only because it is unpopular. That is, he can’t show that he’s ‘with the people’ because that shows that he’s equal to others. Obama can’t handle equality. He has to show that he dominates them. That’s a basic reason why he’s doing this.
rita, here’s something to try: imagine that Obama is both a Marxist and a Muslim: there’s plenty of evidence that could support this thesis. If he’s both, then what he’s doing—seriously weakening the strength and exceptionalism of the USA, by dismantling capitalism and running roughshod over the Constitution—makes perfect sense.
I tend to think this hypothesis isn’t that far fetched: IMO, these aren’t gaffes on the president’s part, they’re calculated assaults.
Of course he supports building a Monument to Terror near ground zero Obama is a cultural Muslim who was raised in Muslim lands. Obama will always side with the Islamists.
Yes, lookout, I agree. Actually my initial observations were more of the nature of rhetorical questions than real wonderment. I read a book once (or saw a movie) where the POTUS was certifiably insane and all the interventions that were necessary to keep the man (it was a man) from destroying the US. That was supposed to be fiction, though for all I know most presidents are insane one way or another. Now it seems that they have a President who is either insane, incompetent, or doing his best to destroy his country for reasons that are almost incredible. The electorate in the US must be of very low intelligence to have been taken in by the guy. It should have been obvious that apart from his big grin, there was nothing (at least nothing you wanted to know about) behind his genial face. One tends to see conspiracies everywhere, but I also have to wonder at the Republican choice of running McCain as a candidate. It’s almost as if they conceded or gave away the election from the start.
Nile Gardiner at the Telegraph (UK):
“There is a distinctly Titanic-like feel to the Obama presidency and it’s not hard to see why. The most left-wing president in modern American history has tried to force a highly interventionist, government-driven agenda that runs counter to the principles of free enterprise, individual freedom, and limited government that have made the United States the greatest power in the world, and the freest nation on earth.
“This, combined with weak leadership both at home and abroad against the backdrop of tremendous economic uncertainty in an increasingly dangerous world, has contributed to a spectacular political collapse for a president once thought to be invincible. America at its core remains a deeply conservative nation, which cherishes its traditions and founding principles. President Obama is increasingly out of step with the American people, by advancing policies that undermine the United States as a global power, while undercutting America’s deep-seated love for freedom.”

Right on, rita.
McCain was a total disaster. He should have used his candidacy to expose all the secrecy surrounding Obama. McCain was so afraid of being labelled racist, that he allowed Obama to sail into the presidency without any resistance at all. The MSM’s complicity was even worse.
My husband and I watched the original “Manchurian Candidate” the other day: the parallels between “reel” and real life were scary.
I believe you and I are both teachers: considering the anti-white, anti-European propaganda that passes for history in our schools these days, and that the kids are far more interested in such other dumbed down pursuits as Face Book and American Idol—most of their parents are equally brainwashed and easily duped—it’s no surprise that Obama and Company were able to fool more than half of the voters in 2008. Fortunately, more people know more about this fraud of a president than they did then. Unfortunately, there are still a whole lot of useful idiots out there—and our schools and universities churn out a whole new batch every year.
November can’t come soon enough . . .
EBD, many thanks for the really fine Nile Gardiner article.
Just when one thinks (well, not really) that Obama has reached the end of his string of outrageous behaviour, he does something else outrageous. WHAT an utter disaster this arrogant impostor is.

Speaking of the US – CNN is reporting that Pakistanis are complaining that US Aid is not doing enough for them. That’s right; the Pakistan man on the street is complaining that the US is not doing enough for them.
Now wait a minute. They aren’t referring to that esteemed institution, the UN – which should be dealing with all this. They are complaining about the US. Why should US support them? Where is Pakistan in this?
