  1. As many enemies as he has accumulated, he wants to be sure his doctor is wielding a scalpel, not a machete.

  2. Well, I kind of like old J. P. – and I’m sorry that he wasn’t able to come up with the extra 1% when he (and we) needed it most.

  3. …and I’m sorry that he wasn’t able to come up with the extra 1% when he (and we) needed it most.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out that good fences make good neighbours. An independent Quebec nation would be poorer than the province of Quebec within Canada but it could survive on its own. That nation would be able to establish normal trading relations with Canada and the USA.
I think Alberta and Quebec would get along somewhat nicely if they were in different countries.

  4. Jacques Parizeau will forever be etched in my memory for his odd statement.
“According to International Law, a country’s borders are inviolete.” Quebec is not a country and never was. Canada is a sovereign state and La Belle Province is Canadian Territory.
The dismemberment of Czechoslovakia is a different matter.
If Quebec leaves Canada….where would they go????

  5. Same thing in the movie “Jesus of Montreal” – 3rd worldish treatment at, I think, Fleury hospital (maybe Hotel Dieu) and then off to The Jewish General for decent treatment. The JGH segment was the only part of the movie in English.

  6. I pointed out the same thing to a coworker yesterday on the bus trip from work.

  7. Did Parizeau have concerns that the other hospitals put language first and more important than skill and competence in their staff/
And if he did why shouldn’t I have concerns that we may be missing out on a lot of excellent people because of some artificial requirement that language is of the utmost importance?

  8. Parizeau is a hypocrite. I saw him in a Montreal coffee shop about two months ago, reading a newspaper. Le Devoir? La Presse? Le Figaro? Nope -the Globe and Mail. Despite his anglo-bashing, he seems to prefer anglo newspapers as well as anglo hospitals.

  9. I hate to quote Pierre E Trudeau but he was right on this one ,
    he once said,
…le quebecois a un grand manque de rigueure…
since rigor in English has a slightly different meaning ( and since French is my first language ) let me explain what trudeau meant,
quebecers do things in a sloppy way. ( it is pretty much a cultural thing )
Now you know why Parizeau did not chose a French quebecois hospital…

  10. Much as I can’t stand his politics, condescension and hypocrisy, I do have a grudging admiration for the old p#!@k. One of my goals in life is to speak French as well as Jacques Parizeau speaks English. Hell, as it comes to that I’d like to speak English as well as Jacques Parizeau speaks English.

  11. And, as one Quebecois comedian put it, what most Quebeckers really want is a free and independent Quebec within a strong united Canada.

  12. Perhaps his regular doctor is more in touch with that particular hospital. Perhaps like El Al, the security is also very competent.

  13. Bonhomme Parizeau was not slated to speak here on behalf of “(IHL)”? Guess he doesn’t speak Jewish.

An Israeli team from the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya, recently beat out 44 universities to take first place in the 2010 edition of the Jean-Pictet Competition on international humanitarian law.
The week-long international competition, held between March 20-27 in Quebec, Canada, matched up teams from universities around the world to test their knowledge in the field of international humanitarian law (IHL) – commonly referred to as the laws of war.

  14. Sad news. Hope he recovers. I hope someone can carry his torch forward. I’d hate to think Ol’ Black Jack Perezeau was our last hope to get this frealoading commie province off ROC’s back.

  15. sasquatch:
The “Quebec’s borders are inviolate” meme arose when the aboroginals in Quebec’s north started saying if Quebec was going to separate from Canada, they were going to separate from Quebec (and take all the hydro power with them!). Parizeau and Lucien Booboo went through various phases of apoplexy trying to quash this idea, without success.
    Friend of USA:
quebecers do things in a sloppy way.
Ask any civil engineer trained in Ontario (heck, anywhere outside of Quebec, for that matter), and they’ll all joke that Quebec’s civil engineers all studied at the “Institute of ‘That’s Close Enough’,eh?”.

  16. I have french in my heritage, and I have NO desire to learn to speak it,
h!ll, I don’t even want to learn how to throw down a rifle

  17. Good thing the Docs aren’t taking an Apartheid stress week for the trauma encountered in that chilling outpouring of hatred. Don’t they have a union to inform them of their rights?

  18. Not that it changes much, but it wasn’t Parizeau’s decision to go to the Jewish General, it was the Urgence Santé’s (Montreal’s ambulance service) choice. He had no say in the matter.

  19. While he is there Parizeau can check out the signs at the Jewish Hospital to see if they conform to the Bilingual Laws or whether they should shut down the Hospital for violation of any laws.

  20. During my youth I was treated twice at the Jewish General and recently spoke of it with high regard to a buddy. To the wonderful staff there I say just hold your noses and send him along.
