30 Replies to “Hopefully a Replacement for Google”

  1. I was in the US this week and there are a ton of ads on tv for this.
Gotta say that letting Microsoft make decisions for me is not high on my list of things to do. I get pissed enough when XP decides it is going to shut down my computer and Install Updates NOW!!!! I don’t need Microsoft deciding which sites are best for me to look at when I do a simple search.

  2. I did some comparison searches and Google is still better. I will check from time to time, but both of those companies is evil. At least now they have each other to hate more than the proletariat.

  3. I really like it, switched within an hour. I’ve always stayed away from google, mostly because of their politically correct aspect. But on the other hand, maybe it’s subconscious and I’m just thinking of “The Bing” on The Sopranos.

  4. God danm it, that yellow ochre and pumpkin orange image is burning my eyeballs out, and it is a horrible affront to the flag of the United States of America. Whomever was running the color correction on that image should lay off the coke. Captain, could you possibly remove that image from your main entry and provide a link to it, instead?

  5. I like Bing, but like Momar google still yields results I am used to. I do check a couple of alternative searches a day.
The Bing images are better, the news stories less so.

  6. There was a radio program with Chef Malcolm giving roadkill recipes to-day. He mentioned a recipe for gophers and I thought this would be the place for it. Tried both of them but couldn’t find it.

  7. Nice to see they’re not embarrassed to show the flag – but we see a totally different page in Canada.

  8. It seems like the “flag” page is only on the US english version, all the other country sites (as well as the spanish US site) have a different page.

  9. I used to love Google. Recently, not so much – too comercialized which is a bit ironic for a leftist outfit. Bing is clean and gives me a good selection of options. It has a much better interface feel to it. I think Google should be scared. Bing just might be for real.

  10. Bing switches automatically to it’s mobile edition when accessing it via an iPhone and It won’t let you go the the full blown site. I hate that. Staying with google for now.

  11. google insults d-day veterans
I entered that and it came back fast.
“Bing is your friend” may be the new phrase.

  12. I can’t understand why there are so many Google haters. It’s so quick, it’s virtually instantaneous It almost always gives me what I want in the first two or three listings. And I like the clean look of its home page; I don’t need to be bothered with a lot of pictures.
And I think “filling his pants” is a bit over the top. Let’s see now – you’re the CEO of the dominant company in search, and the biggest software company in the world launches a competitor with a massively expensive ad campaign. So the natural thing to do is – what? Go for a ride on your yacht? That’s the kind of executive leadership that’s ruined so many companies in the last few years. I think Brin is doing exactly the right thing – not waiting until Bing establishes a solid foothold before reacting. His own participation demonstrates his commitment, and I’m sure that flows down the chain of command. And getting his top people to work on his most dominant product – what exactly would you do, Captain? Put a bunch of second raters in charge, and not show a shred of interest? I’m sure that’s a recipe for guaranteed success.

  13. M$ can go to hell… directly to hell… do not pass go.. do not collect 200.00 dollars…

  14. To each his own, I am an Alta Vista Guy and have been for years.
BTW all seach engines give pretty much the same set of results on the same keywords.
I would use BING second, then Yahoo and then just quit searching, never Google because Google’s green politics and overloaded and over played ads that infect every blog and site on the Internet just annoy me.

  15. The big hate I have for google is trying to find a restaurant. I get a kazillion pages that say no reviews. I know where it is. On about page 3 I find the actual restaurant’s site with the menu. I have menu in the search descriptor so I dinna ken why they can’t find it. The other big hate is when I specify a city and get sites in Ontario or the US. I am not driving 2,000 km to buy gravel. I don’t know if bing will be better but it is worth a shot.

  16. I agree with KevinB’s first statement. I’m a right-winger and I think google does a fine search job. I’m not worried if it doesn’t show the US flag or whatever. Sometimes I think we get so wrapped up in this kind of thing, I feel it’s good to step back, take a breath, and realize there are far worse things in the world than what a search engine homepage does or doesn’t show or support.

  17. Like RFC, I switched over from Google to Bing on the D-Day anniversary. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Bing acknowledging Flag Day today.
My problem with Google is not that it won’t celebrate the flag, it’s that it will celebrate anything BUT the US. I have no problems with pages that choose to be lazy and not change their formats around for every occasion. However, once you do, I’m going to use that to gauge what you value, and what you don’t. Today, Google had NOTHING. Google values the US so little, that even when there was nothing else to honor, it still ignored the occasion. So, now I will ignore Google.

  18. Tough call. Google is evil and full of commies but MS puts out crap full of viruses and crashes all the time.
A pox on both their houses. I’m buying a Mac next time anyway.
I’ll hold out for the Ayn Rand search engine which automatically deletes pages put out by leftards and sends them a nasty virus… lol.

  19. I’m with you Jason, but I’ll use Linux. And Alta Vista is my search engine of choose. If its from microsoft it doesn’t go on my computer.

  20. Microsoft did this to the Wordperfect folks some time ago. They even clobbered the owners of the name ‘Internet Explorer’ with a phalanx of lawyers.
or it could be that ‘bing’ is just very expensive ‘bling’.
    time will tell.
as far as popups etc with any given op. system/browser/search engine combo, well there are tools around that bop them and a lot of it’s free. just go with a known product.

  21. “To each his own, I am an Alta Vista Guy and have been for years.”
Illiquid Assets I’m lukewarm since they lowered themselves to letting yahoo do the work and they cropped a whole bunch of options like finding music.
But google sends my blog most of my hits, if they go I go. LOL

  22. To me, using Google is kind of like buying Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, etc. Why subsidize the enemy? By boycotting these leftist freakshows, I get the same satisfaction that liberals must get from recycling or slapping new taxes on us to “save the planet”.

  23. Tried Bing, don’t like it. News headline search “not available in your area”. What’s that all about?

  24. I like Yahoo. Have never used Google except in one area that they own for all intents and purposes, e. g., e-book translations. And like Mike, I detest Google’s flamboyant display of liberal hypocrisy. Don’t forget, they hammered “W” over privacy issues while the Bush administration was trying to implement terrorist security measures while at the same time Google provided the Red Chinese access to that customer base with no strings. Google can kiss my rock-ribbed Republican behind.
