More than two years ago, an activist lawyer in Ottawa made some grave accusations about how Canadian soldiers treated Afghan detainees. At the time, I noted with some cynicism that this lawyer was employing a classic ‘bait and switch’ strategy: making sensational stabs at Canadian soldiers in order to bring attention to his real grievance, which was the detainee transfer agreement. I was right.
Here’s what the Board of Inquiry found:
7. The members of this Board can state without reservation that the conduct of Canadian Forces personnel when dealing with detainees in the Afghanistan theatre of operations has been consistently above reproach. Indeed, Board members were able to conclude that the professionalism of members of the Canadian Forces in dealing with Afghanistan citizens is such that the Canadian public can have complete confidence in the manner their military representatives carry out operations in general, and in particular the manner in which they handle detainees.
Amir Attaran owes the men and women of the Canadian Forces an apology. I’m not holding my breath.
The kicker is that the ‘bait and switch’ worked.

Perhaps Mr. Attaran would prefer the tender mercies of the Taliban?
Or perhaps his home country, the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The grits ran out of domestic criminals to hug, so they are turning to the real and imaginary criminals from abroad. If there are no real criminals, they will invent the imaginary ones. I am alluding to the exaggerated number of deaths of ‘innocent [insert any grievance group]’.
Good Job Damian, somebody’s got to be the Watch Dog.
You must be a re-incarnated Doberman Pincher ?
,
Did you know that Mr. Attaran is a close personal friend of Michael Ignatieff? When Mikey ran for the Liberal leadership and during the last election CTV and CBC constantly broght this so called “expert” blowhard on to blast the government.
Then, on the same issues the Liberals and ignatieff just parroted Mr. Attaran.
The typical media/Liberal/Liberal backroomer relay gotcha race we see all the time in this backwater country of so called “media /Liberal elites.
Mr. Attaran is like Ignatieff – he paints utopia in theory and criticizes those who have to make decisions in the real world.

How does a UN mandate apply to Canadian forces fighting in Afganistan, taking prisoners on behalf of the Afgan govt and giving said prisoners to the Afgan authorities? Who else should they give them too? If the situation was reversed,we would expect the prisoners to be handed over to Canadian authorities.Canada is an unpaid hired gun of the govt of Afganistan. These prisoners have never left Afgan soil and Canada has no intention of making Afganistan a territory of Canada.
Hmmm… a muzzie activist protesting the CF, who are trying to protect other muslims. Who saw that coming?
Pity we’re no longer selective about the type of immigrant we accept in this country; this clown could kindly return to the 3rd world squat from whence he came, if Canada is unpalatable to him.

Let’s see, Amir Attaran said it was “inexcusable” that the Military Police Complaints Commission didn’t investigate Canada’s treatment of detainees, and yet said “I doubt very much that (the military) should investigate internally. Now, after a public probe into the treatment of detainees, and he’s questioning *it’s* effectiveness.
Clearly, he just wants Canada’s policy to reflect his own goals, which have nothing to do with security or fair play, and considers it a self-evident outrage that it doesn’t.
The detainee agreement that put the POW’s under the control of the Afghan gov’t was a liberal deal. At the time there was an uproar over the treatment of detainees at the Abu Garaib prison by the American. The liberals played to their base by maligning the Americans and their ‘atrocities’. So they did a new deal and then the media forgot about this niggling little fact as they pursued their endless ‘conservatives are so bad ‘ agenda. Don’t expect any apologies or retractions, you may as well hope for the promised ponies from Obama.
Does anyone have an e-mail address where we could comment on or to this “Attraran gentleman” in a more personal manner?
Attaran was and remains a very nasty piece of pond scum.
His fondness for our enemies is but thinly hidden behind his holier than thou high & mighty god of human rights.
Go after the UN Human Rights Council the cubans, arabs, the taliban the other real human rights abusers Mr. Attaran . . or just STFU.
You are boring.
Attaran is like Ignaytieff – an ivory tower associate professor university mouthpiece who pads his resume by writing opinion pieces and then bragging about being published.
He is a faculty member so does not have to make a living in the real world – just collects money from the taxpayer to be a Liberal/special interest shill.

Did you see the moron’s letter in the Globe and Mail today? How he defends Galloway, a known supporter of terrorists?

scum. In a just world he would now be sued into pauper status.
As for the iggy angle – perhaps mikey can say they were just visiting.
Big flock up at the Iranian Embassy in Ottawa today. It seems that everyone there was voicing their opinions on the election in Iran. CBC radio interviewed several Iranian-Canadian protesters who were singing the praises or condemning the pseudo-democracy there. Needless to say, most interviewed by the Canuckistan Bulltweeting Committee were “Proud to be Iranian” living in Canader and voting in Iran.
I loved it when multicultural only meant more food at folkfests. Lately, the immigrants coming to these shores identify more with their homeland than embracing a new one. The Poles, Italians, Ukrainians, Irish, Scots, Finns and others of the last generation all kept their heritage (and recipes) but Canada was their new home and they were willing and did fight and die for it. now it is more of “What can Canada do for me” than anything else.
End of rant, thank you and TGIF, y’all.
Poor Amir seems to have moved on to bigger and better things. The cbc dragged him out Wed nite on a ‘documentary’ about Canada “exporting” MURDER in the form of asbestos to India.he was just as despicable on this new file!
It’s disgusting that the only honorable role in this country besides a “stay-at-home-Mom” is being used as bait.
We are at war. Is it any wonder we have Jihadists in suits while there buddies fight by blowing up innocents. Good cop bad cop. We pay for our own cultural extinction. This Kaffirs paying Jizra for the Islamist cause. The Terrorist scum must be laughing hysterically.
The problem is we bend back words so much as a culture, we forget evil is never sleeping, nor our enemies. Who would rob us of freedom.
It makes perfect sense by those we are fighting to cast aspersions against our soldiers using our money. To demoralize our military & use up our resources. God Bless our Troops.
this dude needs a serious bytch slapping.
this is the downside of the notorious Canadian desire to please everyone.
This is the downside of tolerating enemy agitators and fifth columnists in your country.
And allowing apologists and know nothings to protect them.
“this is the downside of the notorious Canadian desire to please everyone.”
Well said.
amir needs to go back to iran. then he needs to get himself to afganistan where he can fight with his friends the taliban and get his tiny head blown off.
He contributes to medical debates too. Loves euthanasia and I believe is softening up the docs to agree.
