Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Haha. Great intro!
Just heard on the radio that Christian Paradis has asked the riding associations and candidates to be on the alert for a possible election call for the third week of June. In this scenario the Liberals would bring down the government over EI reform and the ballooning deficit.
Hard to believe as the Liberals have only pledged to have 10 people nominated as candidates for the end of June, according to Jean Lapierre the political commentator and ex-Transport Minister.
I have an idea for the Conservatives. The day before the Liberals vote for non-confidence introduce a spending austerity bill that cuts all MP and Senators pay by 10% including expense accounts and cut all salaried civil service pay by 5%. All salaries will remain frozen until there is a surplus in federal government revenues. That should provide some motivation on controlling spending. Now the kicker, also remove the $1.95 funding of political parties and the tax deduction for political parties. Watch the opposition squirm on that bill just before an election….
The Libs must be squirming.Their EI reform talk and budget complaints are not getting the usual press support. I am quite surprised at the number of media talking heads that have remembered the push by the Libs for the big spending budget in December.
querty…I am with you…I am quite looking forward to a huge strategical gotcha from the CPC.
With Count Iggy and that POS Kinsella as the two big brains behind the Liberal party, I say that Harper is in a gunfight with unarmed civilians. Iggy has not been a politician long enough to be very good at the game and Kinsella is an open book of self-inflicted damage.
Should be fun.
You realize that this analogy makes Obama’s deficit the Doomsday Machine.

What I find unacceptable is that we are being bullied into defecits based on our southern neighbour’s idiotic domestic policy agenda.
15 Billion for GM? On what planet is that a good deal for taxpayers? This is just the start I estimate that GM will take 30 Billion total from Canadian taxpayers over the next two years and will still not be profitable. The USA will be in for North of 150 Billion by then.
The automakers products.. they will either be crap or price pointed out of the market, also we will have a HD-DVD vs Blue Ray style market fight between alternative fuels and electric vehicles (Hydrogen/NatGas/PHEV/EV) which will require the manufacturers to make a bet, there will be losers on this bet and they will have to re-tool yet agian to catch up.
There will not be a mixed vehicle fleet for obvious logistical reasons.
So does Canada grow a pair and stand own by taking advantage of the market holes left by the policies of the US and expand our trading base by reallocating resource flows away from the US?
If your buddy jumps of the cliff onto the rocks, do you jump after him, or do you head back and take his car and move into his house?
That is the path out, tying ourselves to economic policy mistakes south of the border is like taking a bullet for a terminal patient.
Hilarious!
Though not quite as hilarious as the prospect of an expensive election in which no party will offer voters any alternative to a massive deficit…
Why can’t our ballots include “NONE OF THE ABOVE” as a choice?
Why is it the Liberals seem alarmed by a mere temporary deficit in Canada, but they aren’t apparently alarmed by the fact that America is already pretty much bankrupt (by Obama’s own admission- “We’re out of money now”) and now, in a way, partly owned by the likes of Red China? And that Obama is hellbent on making things worse?
Besides, hey, the Liberals totally badly wanted and ferociously DEMANDED the deficit, remember? It’s astonishing that they’d do a complete 180 and condemn the deficit, but, hey, what do we expect of the hypocritical Liberals?
And Ignatieff even demanded a SECOND “stimulus” budget! Why aren’t we all talking about that when Iggy points at Flaherty? Flaherty originally didn’t want to do all this! He only did it to kill the coalition of the neocommunists and keep ’em from overthrowing the duly elected government and then doing what Obama’s doing!
If the “coalition” had succeeded, I betcha the deficit would be about double what it is now.
And the EI demands they’re making would kill incentive to work, would kill jobs via automatic EI deductions increases, and would deepen the recession and worsen the deficit, too.
The Liberals and their neocommunist comrades on the other side actually make the Conservatives look quite conservative!
Yes, we hate the deficit, my fellow right-wingers, but what if the Conservatives had risked being usurped? How much, much worse would things be if the neocommunists were in power?
And don’t forget that it’s only a temporary return to big, fat deficits. Once the recovery is underway and the perceived imperative for Keynesian nonsense gone, you know, we’ll have a lot of leeway to make further cuts to wasteful spending and entitlement programs and so on. It wasn’t politically easy to cut stuff when we had a surplus, remember?
I believe there’s a silver lining here. The People will again see the insanity of spending too much and will be more apt to accept deficit-and-debt-fighting cuts like in the Nineties. And as long as Conservatives are in power, the cuts will tend to be the right kind, as opposed to the wrong (Liberal) kind.
That’s why the Conservatives need a healthy majority. We’ll be way better off with a stronger Conservative government which can’t be blackmailed by any stupid “coalitions” again!
To prevent neocommunist blackmail, we must get that majority. So keep working to get it; don’t give up so bloody easily!
One of the big reasons for the deficit is democracy. Ontario has the votes and the failing auto industry. Unfortunately too many Ontarians think bailing out 10,000 of their fat lazy over compensated auto workers is more important than the hundreds of thousands of workers all over Canada losing their jobs.

“Too much democracy” – the number one reason that socialists run out of money.*
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Remember the coalition?
A mere six months ago, Layton pulled together the weak-minded opposition on the premise that $34 billion has to be spend … not tomorrow, but right now.
Six months later, add $13 billion to bail out dying car manufacturers (which no political party in Canada opposed despite taxpayers being against it) and Canada now is close to $50 billion in the glue.
Who the hell is looking after our money?
“Who the hell is looking after our money?”
As someone once told me, there are only two kinds of money in this world: my money and your money.
My money is sacrosanct and not to be fiddled with; your money is entirely up for grabs.
Maybe voters in the east and the Yukon think that they can strip the west of all revenues and have another NEP party. Western Premiers should make it clear that that would NOT be an option. The price of oil is climbing and Icky and his gang know that – Icky is not popular out west so he would not even want M.P.s from the west…the Ontario voters would be right up the bankruptcy creek if they found themselves with Icky and Mcsquinty running the coffers. Icky wants Quebec M.P.s and he is already in bed with the Blocheads and the Dippers so my opinion is that the Puffins/the Dippers and the Blocheads would fire up a ‘new’ coalition gov’t should the Conservatives not win a majority. This result would cut the country in half – the west would go out on their own and Canada would become two or three new nations. This would be good for the west but not so good for the east… except NFLD and I doubt that NFLD would be willing to participate in a coalition arrangement with high oil prices..we would have all the brain power and all the $$, the east would have more people though…we do live in interesting times.
Compare the temporary Canadian deficit to the far, far worse situation in America.
In fact, Pravda did. No, not the TorStar “Pravda”… the real Pravda, y’know, Darth Vladimir’s mouthpiece…

Look at what Obama has done- brought ridicule upon America for its “descent into Marxism”… by Russia!
I don’t know if Pravda’s said anything about Canada, but, hey, we’re better off with the Harper Conservatives than our American brothers and sisters are with the Obama Regime.
I think the Russkies are gleeful with what their agents have done to America over the past, oh, almost a century now. The tone is apparent in the article. The smugness…
It looks to me like the Russians, who are always jealous of America, got what they wanted, ie. to see America screwed up, so that Russia wouldn’t look so bad anymore in comparison.
Proud to Be a Britsh Columbian. The WCI Cap and Trade plan is looking mighty good for Gordon “the only one the ballot” Campbell to help with the tax problem. (NDP will never govern BC again unless they suddenly stop being socialists or my entire generation dies off or moves away, so we are stuck with the BC Liberals which are Socialism Lite).
Hey Gordo hows that Carbon Tax working out for ya?

Never Mind.
Perhaps this has something to do with it?
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2009/05/22/bc-welfare-cases-up.html
Naw… If we spend more on welfare it will help the economy, Obama says so!
There’s isn’t going to be a summer election because only one party, the Conservatives, actually want one. The Liberals would have us there right now if they thought they could win.
They can’t and they know it. Instead Ignatieff bitches about the deficit and has zero credibility on the issue (spend! spend! spend!), with no credible alternative course of action to offer. He has been leader of the party for almost six months and just now they are putting together a platform.
I can see it now – better education in our cities. Their EI proposals are ridiculous; they’re not going to force an election over “temporary” measures (like income tax?).
I love the idea of campaiging against the $1.95 removal during the election. It’s a new policy anyway and, should a miracle happen and Ignatieff convince Jack and Gilles to play along, he will split the vote in two, and reasonably argue that the opposition is using this money to force unwanted $300 million elections on Canadians.
Ignatieff is stuck with his coalition bedfellows and IMO doesn’t have the necessary political instincts to take on Stephen Harper who can rightly point to a high C$ as evidence that Canada is seen as an economic safe harbour.
Nope, no election yet.
Sentinel:
It was not the Russian people who wanted to see America in this glue.
It was the Communist Party, which ran the Soviet Union.
And the American people are too self-satisified with themselves to understand where they are being led to.
Still, the US allows mid-term elections and that’s when the trend can be reversed. I have all the confidence that America will not want to repeat the disaster of the Soviet Union.
There are voices crying out now. In Russia, anybody that spoke out in the early part of the revolution was killed.
The marxists can try the same here, but they will be unable to get away with it.
Look at the smear campaign against Rush Limbaugh when he warned, back in December, that the UAW would take control of the car manufacturers.
Say, wasn’t it the …LIBERALS!!!!… who have been saying Harper should be spending …MOREMOREMORE!!!… on stimulus?
I was just wondering. I seem to remember Iggy saying something about “MOREMOREMORE damn the deficit full speed ahead!”
set you free, the UAW didn’t take control of GM and Chrysler. Barry -gave- it to them. After -stealing- it from the bond holders and share holders. At gunpoint, I might add.
So while the UAW are certainly guilty of receiving stolen goods, it must be said they didn’t pull the stick-up themselves.
“Dammit, Jim, I’m a [fill in the blank], not a leader!”
New Star Trek sucks, 9-fingered, WW2 hero Scotty rocks.
The name of the game is “Bailout” and it has been successfully played out time and time again. Chrysler was first bought out in the US in 1975. Read The Creature From Jekyll Island. All money that exists in North America today was created out of thin air as a result of government debt to the US Federal Reserve. Without a national debt, there is no money in circulation. Banks collect interest from money that they did not earn but simply created from nothing. Observe Ron Paul who wants to return to a national gold standard for world currency instead of the counterfeit fiat monetary system in use today that has failed time and time again throughout recent history. Why does our money say “This note is legal tender” when it used to say “Will pay to the bearer upon demand”? Read the book.
Phantomn:
Semantics. Obviously Obama had to reward his support base in creating the workers paradise of the USSA.
The fact remains the UAW has 55% ownership stake in Chrysler and 17% of Government Motors, in which the US government is the biggest shareholder (state ownership of means of production).
It may well be that’s because the previous ownership short-changed their pension funds, but they ended up with ownership.
The big losers are the bondholders and the taxpayers on both sides of the border.
I thought from the Headline, that it was going to be about iRuby and her lanlord problem.

Note Ron Paul wants a audit of Fort Knox.
There may be no gold. The Eu Bankers may have the gold and is why there has not been the required audits. Checkmate by EU on gold standard. Now silver that is another possibility.
This is almost as good as Iggy’s EI proposal of 9 weeks work to collect pogey for the next 40.
Personally, I think Iggy should make it 9 1/2 weeks, then it can mirror the steamy film of the same name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9%C2%BD_Weeks
Finances cast as erotic sado masochism.
Yep, taking ‘care of your money’.
At least with 9 1/2 weeks qualification this would mirror the taxpayer looking like a ‘cheap trick’.

In the past 2 weeks I have reread The Fountainhead, and I am working my way through reading Atlas Shrugged for the 3rd or 4th time.
I see no Howard Roarke or John Galt on the horizon to save us from the looters, though.
Iggy appears to be the mirror image of a man who takes pictures of Nazi symbols in wee lads bathrooms, hum maybe the stuck on stupid is rubbing off. In Iggy’s early days he showed promise but since then he’s issued one edict after another from on GTA HIGH to the PM and then he publicly pretends he did no such thing. He either suffers from short term memory loss or his PR advisor is an arsehole of the highest magnitude.
The Nat Post cartoon this week was good:
Iggy saying to Flaherty: “I said spend, spend, spend; not spend, spend, spend, spend”.
Who is this Iggy? The only Iggy I know was a carton Charactor (1950’s) in little Lulu…
That Iggy had the IQ of a turkey…….
Sentinel:
While in general I agree with you, I think your characterization of Keynesian policy as “nonsense” is off the mark.
Far too few people truly understand what Keynes preached – during good times, government should build up surpluses, and during bad times, run deficits. Electrical engineers will add inductors and capacitors to circuits to prevent oscillation or overshoot when step functions are applied. One could think of government acting in this fashion – when a step function like the bankruptcy of two major auto firms is applied to the economy, the government keeps the money (current) flowing.
The problem is people like Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe only apply the second half of Keynes’ prescription. They love to run deficits, but when good times appear, they’re never ready to pay down debt (and heaven forbid, actually build up a war chest like Alberta’s Heritage Fund).
I would love to see us back in the black, and I hope the economy recovers next year so the deficits can be cut. I agree that a stronger Tory majority would allow this to happen sooner rather than later. Let’s hope that occurs!
Nah, KevinB, Keynes was a fraud from beginning to end. The free market rewards the productive because it is based on voluntary trade between individuals for mutual benefit / profit. Government redistribution of wealth always involves a layer of unproductive bureaucracy and often allocates resources to less productive people, which drags the economy and the standard of living down.
Governments should not be running a surplus or a deficit. They should obtain what they need to carry out their proper function of protecting individual rights through police, military and courts.
The Lieberals and NDP got the budget they demanded in November, for them to critsize it now is HIPOCRACY at is best! On the other hand, PMSH and crew should have told iggy to #uck off. By giving in to their demands makes PMSH a puppet. One that can be blamed if it doesn’t work. This was a piss poor political move. the correct move would have been to “stay the course” and challenge the Lieberals to call an election!
The Lieberals, and NDP can’t afford an election, push them to the limit!!!!!
Who is this Iggy? The only Iggy I know was a carton Charactor (1950’s) in little Lulu…
That Iggy had the IQ of a turkey……. posted by A hole – so does the one that this post is mentioning…I call him Icky…’stinky’, ‘pig pen’ (from Linus)..just as good.
The sad part is we really don’t have a conservative party in Canada anymore.
JCL
jcl, correct. it’s a good thing the number starts with a b and not a t and it is fifty not nine hundred and ninety-nine bbbbbbbb or tttttttt. quick print more. i should change my nick name to the last conservative.
