“No one’s immune,” said one staffer, who called the mood “extremely grim.

Maybe lying to the public and cheerleading all things left and all politicians left of Rae and Obama is not paying off. Could it be that the public is waking up to the fact that wasting any money on a paper to be lied to is not a good investment. Could it be that the public in these economic times are starting to realize that their priorities are feeding their families and not caring a damn who or what lindsay lowbrow is boinking tonight.
They had it coming.
Whats the use in a free press if they all belong to the same club which the MSM becomes more daily?
Any way the guy is wrong. Only those talented or ready to back their opinions with facts are safe. As well those who are relevent to the 21st century, not the 20th. Indeed these individuals will make a pile from just having honest opinions with the talent to write what people are thinking in good prose.
The shock is most of them never went to a Journalist school. Nor are card carring water bearers for Neo-Marxism
Hah! This one’s easy!! ALL the staff at ‘People’ on general principle, and ALL the staff at ‘Fortune and Money’ ’cause they obviously should have seen this coming…;)
I hear that the National Post isn’t doing too well either.
I’m willing to discuss a deal where all they have to deliver are the TV guide and the grocery store fliers for maybe $5 a month.
It’s about Time…
Gee, I can’t believe nobody threw that out already. Truth is that Time, Newsweek and to a slighty lesser extent,MacLean’s, have all strayed from being weekly news magazines to op-eds with ads. I certainly wonder what they are teaching in journalism school these days.
abcd….don’t forget the comics and x-words!
Canwest Global just announced a workforce reduction of 530 people across Canada, including 300+ on the broadcast side, to begin in January…
Iberia, if the Post can’t make it in the marketplace it fails. I buy it because it discusses and represents all points of view.
How’s CAW doing for you these days. Step forward to the cliff, a little closer please. Funny how the non-union car companies seem to be weathering the storm.
Did anyone read some of the comments on the link?
OUCH!!!
Where are all the liberal supporters in defense of Time?
Oh wait, I forgot, Obama won. Sheep don’t need to be reminded who to vote for. Time now needs a bailout ’till 2012.
Psst! Obama…Payback “Time”.
I saw today that CHEK-TV (part of CanWest Global network) laid off another 19 employees. No surprise – I can’t recall the last time I watched ’em.
Here’s what CanWest Global’s doing in Kelowna:
“CHBC draws more than 60,000 viewers to its 5 p.m. newscast. Even though the 50-year-old station is one of the few TV outlets making money, CanWest‘s stock price has plummeted to less than a dollar.
CHBC appears to be a victim of a larger corporate downturn” http://www.kelownadailycourier.ca/stories_local.php?id=147204
Iberia snarks: “I hear that the National Post isn’t doing too well either.”
Yes, snarky puss. The National Post is not immune from the general decline in the MSM That’s because I keep seeing things like this in there: http://phantomsoapbox.blogspot.com/2008/11/i-may-have-to-barf-or-break-something-i.html
That’s my comment on Noah Richler’s “Our Obama Will Be Native”, wherein he contends Canada can never be redeemed from our present shameful state until we have an Indian prime minister. Merely electing a black guy ain’t going to get it done, he says.
Is this Richler piece the kind of thing a Canadian is going to pay money to read? I think not, hence the increasing level of pain Izzy Asper is feeling in his wallet area.
Looks good on the lot of them. Faster please.
Hey, I’m no fan of MSM. They certainly have become organs of the left.
But that just suggests that readership will go down. Their problems are because of ad revenues dropping. My take on why ad revenues are down is because they can’t show linkage between their ads and making money on the part of the corporate buyers.
Craigslist, eBay, Google adsense, are all internet companies that are having a direct impact on ad revenues.
Craigslist and eBay have supplanted classified ads where newspapers make their largest profits. Google adsense shows direct linkage between adds and specific customer behavior such as signing up on your site.
Companies are flocking to internet forms of advertising. P&G is expecting to move more than 60% of it’s $2b advertising to the net over the the internet in the next 5 years. Or so a P&Ger told me.
So, are they dying because they write such drivel, or are they dying because more effective ad mechanisms are springing up around them.
As mush as I’m enjoying watching their demise, I don’t think it’s because of their lousy reporting – as stinky as it is.
Just my view
