Though I’ll be posting updates, I’m not going to liveblog what you can readily access online or on air, but the comments are open for your links, reaction and local reports. Just don’t go breaking any laws, though by the looks of things…

… Elections Canada has better things to do than track down surly beavers.
However, as traffic will be heavy tonight, PLEASE avoid tying up server resources with one-liners, chat, expletives, and whatnot.
Game on!
And in these waning hours, one final pitch from Gaia to the voters of southern Saskatchewan –

Only your vote can save the planet from global warming!
Update: Looks like Dizzy Lizzy picked a bad day to go carbon free.
My goodness, a couple of blog sites are getting slammed tonight. (Try not to hit refresh too often, ok?)
And in other breaking news – SDA still up, Elections Canada still down.
Lusers.
Methinks it looks like Karlheinz Schreiber picked a bad day to go midday cocktail free.
One we’ve all been waiting for – GARTH TURNER DEFEATED
Oh! – and to all my deluded Liberal blogging friends living east of Manitoba – I told you so.

Why is the CPC wasting so much time on Quebec when it is time to bring Atlantic Canada, Sask and Manitoba and keep Ontario on side?
Too much oney wasted on Quebec, honestly. Danny boy Williams is way out to lunch on his hatred of the CPC considering the benefits NL gets compared to everyone else, but if he can make em go the way of the CPC then the CPC would be in majority territory right now…
If you take a look at Harper’s record since becoming leader of the CPC, the seat count for the Conservatives has steadily risen, while the Libs’ has steadily fallen.
Like Paul Wells said: “Harper believes the longer he’s Prime Minister, the longer he’s Prime Minister.”
And he’s now got a strong enough minority (coupled with a near-bankrupt Liberal Party) that he can pretty much do what he wants.
Yowza. Strange days ahead, people — Stephen Harper may have just engineered the first minority government in Canadian history that can act like a majority government for an indefinite period of time.
Garth

The CPC failure was wasting too much time pandering to Quebec, you’d think Meech would have taught em.
“Oliver is clearly pissed.”
I’d suggest he hold his breath for the next 60 days and then file a live report from his crypt. I’ll bring garlic and a Federal Firearms Acquisition Certificate.

I think old Craig died two hour ago, but the tape loop up his ass is still rolling.
Very tight race in Mississauga-Erindale.
Liberal seat holder Omar Alghabra, who you may remember was serenaded with pro-Mohammedan shouts of joy when he won the party’s nomination back in 2005, is in a fight for his life.
He’s leading by 100 votes right now.
Jane Taber will have to learn a new yodel.
Press your nose to the window Danny Whine Williams, you’re on the outside looking in’
langman, Got that right!
langman, Got that right!
Rick Mercer providing punditry on the Ceeb. Sheeesh.
Oliver reminds me of one of those two old Muppets jeering from the balcony.
“Rick Mercer providing punditry on the Ceeb”
That’s like believing Count Chocula is a real Romanian Prince. If Wile E Coyote created a tv network to catch the roadrunner, it would be the CBC.
Well, bizarre how we’re getting there, but this is what I thought would happen. Gerard Kennedy winning seems to be the disappointment, but oh well.
This is the perfect result, folks. This will keep Mr. Dion on longer.

I just hurt myself
Hey, anyone know the independents? (3 according to CTV)
Apparently Arthur is losing, I figure Casey is 1, who are the others?
“Oliver reminds me of one of those two old Muppets jeering from the balcony.”
Statler and Waldorf had more insightful political philosophy. They also didn’t get eyelid tucks and hair dye jobs to mask the fact that they were born before the discovery of fire in the Nile River Valley.
Tonight on the CBC:
Everyone discusses the Conservatives “failure”.
Nobody talks about the Green “success”.
Rick Mercer calls for Harper’s resignation.
Keith Boag cries.
About par for the course…
Oliver is truely entertaining tonight. When the numbers were just starting to come in he went off that if Harper receives less seats than he started with there’ll be loud rumblings over his leadership. Lloyd had to playfully slap him down, “Getting a little ahead of ourselves aren’t we Craig?” Oliver sneered!
Susan Ormiston on the CBC talking about “twitters” and “tweats” on the internet re the election.
What the hell is that?
“Oliver sneered”
That’s his optimistic look. You should see him when he’s in a bad mood.
oh my word. ndp is leading in saskatoon-rosetown-biggar. i think i’m going to cry…
Echoing Hannibal’s and cal2’s remarks about CTV’s Craig Olivers extreme partisan remarks. It was making me so sick I had to jump over to The Peoples Television Network.
Time for this dud to retire. As Leo Amery said to Neville Chamberlain in the House Of Commons in May 1940: “You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”
I have some balm reading many comments here. Somewhat pithy though….. but certain people deserve it. This as I watch CTV.
There is silvery haired Bob Rae. Ah, says he, rubbing it in, Stephen Harper called the election because he wanted a majority. He hasn’t got it.
Never mind. Cameron Ross (Cons). went down in Sault Ste Marie by about only 1000 votes to long time unbeatable incumbent Tony Martin (NDP).
Cameron Ross must stand here again.
Now on to CBC. Someone moaning about the poor Canadian voter being put on to vote . Oh, are they not going to be asking why?
Ad Nauseum.
Carol Skelton stopped by the house tonight to say hi. Let’s just say that Kelly Block has a lot to learn about campaigning.
Oliver and Lloyd Robertson congratulate Goodale on winning his riding.
Goodale just on CTV says he had a tough fight as a result of the CPC and the Saskatchewan Party.
Not the “gov’t of Saskatchewan”? Oh, I forgot Ralph, it’s the CPC that picks fights with the provinces.
“Time for this dud to retire.”
I think CTV gets SR&ED tax credits for keeping him around as some type of sick social science experiment. That or he’s been waiting for Lloyd to hand him the anchor desk and is beginning to suspect that Lloyd may not have been straight with him all these years.
You can’t put one past ol Craiger forever.
Oliver and Lloyd Robertson congratulate Goodale on winning his riding.
CBCpravda now taking about proportional representation.
Pansbridge fawning over Trudeau, puke. I wish I could reach thru the screen and drag his nuts thru his nose
Maxime Bernier gets re-elected with 60+%, thus ensuring more pics of pneumatic Julie Couillard.
Wallyj:
That quote “I knew Danny Williams when he was an adult” was Marjory Lebreton. Best line of the evening.
Mohammedan Liberal Omar Alghabra losing by 8 votes with 30k votes counted. A recount is a certainty.
For a good laugh/puke, go over to Cherniak’s and read his mash note to Steffie Dion.

Good one Sounder and add Mike Duffy to that.
“losing by 8 votes with 30k votes counted”
Sounds like a job for Acorn — they could sign up each of the Toronto Argos to vote 75 times each and assure Omar a victory.
Well, my riding is now Tory blue, with the Liberal incumbent defeated… 🙂
Overall, it appears that, despite the bad luck and an MSM that tried its darndest to help the Leftist Opposition bash the Tories, the Tories have done better than in the last election, with the Liberals doing worse.
While it’s not a majority, I’d say that just doing better than last time speaks for itself and gives the Tories a stronger mandate to govern.
The Leftist Opposition can try to prevent governance all it wants, but how, then, will that intransigence play with ordinary Canadians, who want Parliament to work? (They should’ve elected a majority Conservative gov’t to prevent the deadlocking we’ve already seen, thanks to the radical Leftists, and that includes the Liberals, who are, seriously, leftist, not centrist!).
If the Leftists want to try to bully the gov’t, then they’ll be the ones forcing an election. If they don’t want to do this, then I suggest they be more cooperative and respect the fact that Canadians put the Tories back in power with a larger caucus. This means the Leftists will have to give a little more, be more flexible, more open-minded, tolerant…
Speaking of the elven one…..he can kiss my a55…Peter Kent, the man Jason artlessly tried to smear wins nicely in my riding of Thornhill. And yes Thornhill’s nextdoor riding is Marth Hall Findlay’s Willowdale.
The barbarians are at the 416 gate!!!
How badly did Jason’s little prtege get her butt kicked in Caledon by Dave Tilson……yup I want Jason as my political consultant for his record of success.
Potentate Dosanj losing in Vancouver South.
“For a good laugh/puke, go over to Cherniak’s and read his mash note to Steffie Dion.”
No thanks, Matt – my digestion is iffy enough as it is.
Lotsa strategic voting here in my riding, with my liberal neighbours going big-L and voting against Peggy Nash and for Gerard Kennedy in the (vain) hope of defeating Harper. Counting lawn signs Peggy had the lead, but principled voting isn’t the rule ’round these parts.
Cherniak:
The Conservatives smeared us; The NDP outspent us.
Leadership You Can Count On!
I’m happy with the election insofar as the libs are dead (broke, with a leadership convention to pay for to replace Dion or run again with Dion – either way, they’re toast.)
That said, Harper cost himself the majority. He should never have said a word on crime or culture. All he had to do was cruse and he would have picked up 15 or so seats in QC and taken his majority.
Just checked on Cheniak’s little bird, Debbie Finch……
Dave Tilson 53.1 % or 21,075
Debbie Finch 19% or 7,551
almost beaten by the Green Candidate
Ard Van Leewen 17.3 7,082
So his protege almost loses to the party that had the main plank of his leader…..you can’t write this stuff…..
Oh, and the Libs can’t even count themselves as a regional party, never mind a national party.
They only got a handful of seats outside of Montreal, Toronto and the east coast.
5 seats west of ontario (and 7 or 8 west of Toronto.)
Already you know the headline on the Toronto Star tomorrow morning…
“HARPER DENIED HIS MAJORITY”
The story isn’t, whatever happened to the once-great Liberal Party?32 seat differential goes to 70!!!… this with MSM attacks al throughout the election.
And if anyone notices, on all the networks (and I’m switching between them) no one is talking about the carbon tax and it’s massive rejection by Canadians.
Don’t know of anyone else has noticed the omission by the networks. I find it interesting.
Congratulations CPC! BTW next time try running for government instead of opposition, you might be surprised at what happens. PMSH is the best Prime Minister we Canadians have had in a very long time and for him to be re-elected with a minority despite and unelectable opposition leader tells me that the Conservative Party needs re-jig its thinking. I didn’t need to hear why I didn’t want to vote for the other guys I needed to hear why I wanted to vote for you. No I don’t think you had to run around with the taxpayers wallet hanging out but you could have given a much clearer picture of where you would take this nation.
No Harper should not have spent so much time pandering to Quebec (or trying to piss them off, but you have to admit the whole arts thing was way overblown and misrepresented by our MSM).
Rather he should have focussed on the Atlantic and the Prairies. That would have been enough for majority.
Quebec will never be satisfied by a national party for any length of time.
Warwick:
This is the best result for the Conservative Party, without question.
Majority forces Dion out automatically. High enough seat count that all three parties have to gang up if they wish to defeat Harper. No one’s going to dare do it, especially the Liberals, so this is a de facto majority. It’s not, but it is.
“Hoot, Hoot”
