Not surprisingly, to the left, violent crime, and what should be done to deal with it, boils down to statistics. Well, let me tell them something! Victims of violent crime are NOT statistics. Crime affects individuals — something that MSM, lawyers and criminologists seem to completely ignore.
Canada gets on average 500 murders a year. If, just for the sake of argument, that number magically dropped to one next year, but that ONE was a loved one… someone close to you, isn’t that going to affect you more than the 500 murders the year previous did? They don’t seem to get that.
And MSM pushes reporting on violent crime statistics always with a don’t-worry-be-happy underlying message and that there’s no need to get tougher on crime … of course, implicitly attacking the Harper agenda as they do. Again, given their arguments, should sentencing then be determined by the level of a given violent crime??? If, as I stated above, Canada only had one single murder each year, does that mean that the person convicted should get a sentence corresponding and “proportionate” (one of the lefts favourite terms) to the national murder rate? I don’t care per se about the amount of violent crime and specifically if it goes up or down. I want the perpetrators who commit those crimes locked up, REGARDLESS of how many they number! Protection of law-abiding citizens from these thugs is what’s paramount.
That’s what it’s all about then, Shaken. They’re putting out bogus stats to erode support for the Conservatives.
Is there any movement more desperate for power in the democracies of the world than the LPC bolstered by the MSM and the Pollsters who always have a poll to push forward on every concocted issue.

Listing statistics for violent crime for cities is another fools game. “Violent crime in Toronto is down…” I often hear. What does that mean exactly? Toronto is a city — like virtually all others — made up of communities so your chances of being a victim of violent crime depends on where you live, no? So it’s rather stupid for MSM to tell millions of people in this city that they are safe. Of course, those doing the reporting, as well as defense lawyers and criminologists who aid them in their spin, don’t live in the most dangerous parts. So it’s easy for them to say things are fine.

The city of Toronto has about double the crime rate of the surrounding regions. Durham, York, Peel and Halton are some of the lowest crime areas anywhere in Canada, and are responsible for the GTA’s overall low crime average.

Always wanted to check out the criminal court at Eglinton and Warden as everytime I drive by it looks like a junior Caribana scene. The only white faces in the hallways were the lawyers talking to their clients with several cornrowed men being led to various rooms by police officers. Several muslims there but as Islam is the religion of peace they must be there in a consulting role of some sort.
Various statistical sources seem to state our prisons are filled with native indians and blacks yet the Star’s pie chart rejects those figures. Since I have zero trust in the RedStar doubt they are right.

the proximity to reserves , or being an urban reserve like Regina is the major factor in crime rates. they dont like to say it .
Canada has the highest rural crime rate of any industrial country and its all because reserves are usually counted in the rural stats.

I’m surprised by that because of the PC nature of politics in Toronto, both from the municipal and provincial levels of government and the unaccountable, politically correct beauracrats who administer it on a daily basis….remember “holiday tree”?
In the 1980s, the Toronto Police Force (oops, Toronto Police Service it now is….I forgot) had the “Asian Crime Squad”, which was its actual name and, in fact, described as such in all the news at the time. That part of the police dept. dealt primarily with organized crime in the Vietnamese community. I can’t remember exactly when it was disbanded but a lot of time has passed since. So I’m surprised that “African Canadian Youth Justice Court” exists. Then again, considering the way our justice system works and who it works for, there’s really no true meaning or understanding in their use of the term from a victim’s standpoint.
The solution is to ban SUVs.
Didn’t Stats Canada get caught fudging Crime Statistics, they weren’t reporting crimes involving knives and pipes etc as “Violent Crimes” ergo it made it appear that violent crime was on the decrease.
I wonder what crimes they left out of their current assessment of “Violent Crime”? I suspect it’s car jackings, it’s rampant in Halifax. Why bother buying a car when you can steal one daily and get caught get realeased and steal another one to drive home. It’s not like they ever get sent to jail, I mean dah it’s only a car and it’s only costing consumers’ millions in lost insurance claims.

When Toronto doesn’t even show up on the “most violent city in the country” stats, you know something is horribly wrong with the information gathering techniques. I agree with jp @ 6:02, the surrounding law abiding areas offset tranna’s not-so-very-law abiding areas.
maybe with some really creative statistics gathering, factoring in the surrounding neighbourhoods that have little or no gun violence/gang warfare…well by simple extrapolation tranna the good would end up with a negative crime rate. not only is there 0 but less than 0 crime in tranna. Victoria is very very dangerous however. Stay away from Vancouver Island
