Conservative.ca “riddled with childish shots”

The Politic has good advice and it’s long overdue;

…you’re not in the opposition anymore, time to drop the childish taunting (and poor design) and act like the government.

Here’s some more.
There exists a persistent misconception inside political/media circles that the political interweb is the domain of “tech savvy twenty-somethings”. The Conservative’s website has, in all likelihood, been influenced by this ridiculous assumption and that means it’s time to fire some of the high-priced help. If your web people haven’t even a remedial understanding of their audience demographic, they have no business being involved in your communications strategy.
Here is your demographic. Start talking to them instead of non-existent college kids.
But hey – but what do I know about web based communication? I’m just a commercial artist, living in backwoods Saskatchewan.

  1. “But hey – but what do I know? I’m just a commercial artist, living in backwoods Saskatchewan.”
You forgot xenophobic. Although I can’t figure out why someone would be afraid of xenon… is it a greenhouse gas or something? 😉
But back on topic, I agree. The Conservative website should be about educating people in what it means to be a Conservative and about the accomplishments of the party and their vision. I realize a lot of that is likely being held back for an election but I’m sure they can do something positive.

  2. It’s true – the belief all bloggers are kids. Here is what I posted awhile ago and it’s also true – that we are the ones with money
At 71 I am not a younger reader but I also get most of my news from Blogs. I find there are some very well informed and knowledgeable people on the blogs and I can get usually get far more accurate information and from different sources. I am tired of getting personal opinion, uninformed & outright distortion of facts, personal political views, lazy, inaccurate and many times non existence research from so called and well known “Media Personalities” consisting of columnists, newscasters, pundits, Ottawa correspondents, correspondents on assignment etc. presented to me as NEWS and INFORMED COMMENT as well as “political forums, town halls, pundits” and so on where the people, questions and answers are preordained for their political bias and slant. I feel a number of people in the media attempt to play the public as uniformed fools and suckers that can be influenced by their spin, which unfortunately in many cases is true.

  3. You are right on there. The federal conservative website reads like a british tabloid… I kept waiting for the smiley face pop ups.

  4. They blew it…
I fully expect them to remedy it
CPC is not run by a bunch of dummies…
However not everything works out well

  5. Just as a matter of curiosity, what was the most likely reason for the drop in May/08 for BOTH blogs?

  6. daninvan…good weather and boring politics. We can thank Dion for his silly Shaft…that got things stirred up.
The CPC web is cartoonish. The gov.ca site is an excellent source of pictures and info that you won’t find on the CPC web or the media.
Good points,Kate, and as you’ve mentioned previously a few ‘MP’s’ check in here so we can hope to see some change….that is they consider the advice of a backwoods artist who rides…and breeds dogs.

  7. The picture with what looks like gunshot holes surrounding Dion is still on the CPC website http://www.conservative.ca/ filed under Press => Other Stories => A Dion Tax Trick Score Card July 15 2008.
I guess it’ll be up for a while since the kids have probably gone home to their parents for the weekend.
The hip-hop mockery of Dion and Iggy is still filed under “Press” => “Just the facts” => May 21.
The entire site is riddled with amateur-hour teeny-tripe. Have they no better way to invest the donations from their supporters?
What an embarrassment to think this is the website of the party that is governing the country.
Time for a communications shake-up at HQ, I’d say.

  8. Definately an eye-opener Darcey. I’ve got a hobby website that in two of the last 12 months has gotten over double the unique visitors than both the CPC and Libs combined!

  9. The Liberal Party of Canada and the Conservative Party of Canada are acting like spoiled snotty brats. The never ending non-scandles and bitch slapping is embarrassing to me.
Here’s a piece of advice for the powers that be, no one will vote in the next election if you don’t grow up and put your adult undies on. Enough of the childish tit for tat already.

  10. I noticed that what seems to give the Liberal site a bit of substance is that they are able to link to all the negative headlines about the Conservatives. Well, since the MSM is not prone to publish positive headlines about the Conservatives — even when the news might be a bit positive — the Conservatives don’t have a lot of leverage here. Maybe they should link to selected Blogging Tories headlines — actually, that would be good for all my Liberal friends who would not otherwise check out Blogging Tories — but who make a point of going to the Conservative site to complain.

  11. My mistake — upon taking a closer look, I see Liberals are not providing actual links to headlines. They are posting their own daily rants about the conservatives (written up like articles). Well, that would be easy. I do think the Conservatives have a golden opportunity to present the conservative side of many issues and provide a bit of background by doing something similar on their website. They just need to hire a couple of writers. They could easily beef of the content using this technique. I would be pleased to provide my many thoughtful letters to the editors of various newspapers as a starting point.

  12. Well said Richard the mainstream media stoppped becoming “news” a long time ago.
Bloggers are a great source but sometimes looking for a balanced opinion is the real skill.
Looking for news on blogs is like being goldilocks. Not too much left, not too much right, somewhere in the middle is just right.

  13. Well said Kate! I hope someone from the Conservative Party with some amount of brains and influence reads your post. Imagine how novel it would be to have a party web site that was mentally simulating, and that assumed the viewing audience was intelligent.
By the way, isn’t it time for another one of those surveys of yours?

  14. I couldn’t give a rats ass about “balance”.
Who said that “balancing between the fire and the firetrucks destroys the house.”
Ok, I just made it up: but I want the truth , balance is for guys on the fence.

  15. Molarmauler, I’ll ignore your first comment, childish, about xenon haters.
But I agree with you about the site in question. UI rarely go there; but I would go there more if it had INFORMATION

  17. LindaL @5.34 yes, and actually explain what a conservative political viewpoint of the world really is, rather than just be partisan. Many people I talk to just don’t have any conception of right wing political philosophy, having been indoctrinated by the liberal establishment for just sooo long.

  18. I see your point Richfisher but I would expect a balance of both views to give me a better idea what is true.
If somebody just listens to Rush on the right or Rhandi Rhodes on left they are poorly mislead.

  19. CPC member, 64 y.o. engineer involved in many offshore hydro projects.
I’ve never been to CPC website and, from what I read here, I almost certainly never will.
What are you doing with my donations?

  20. felis, the decaying corporate manager and scratchy amateur musician, hits the big 6-0 before this current global-warming-shortened summer ends. Most days I’m grateful to have got this far, considering how many friends and acquaintances have not. Some days, like earlier this week when cbcPravda lived up to its “all-Khadr-all-the-time-reputation”, I think I’ve lived too long.
Bad website or not, who else can you vote for and still maintain even a faint hope for this country?

  21. ‘the front page is riddled with childish shots and games aimed at the Liberals, and particular Stephane Dion’.
Now tell me in good conscience, does anybody need to make shots at the French citizen Dion. Is he not sort of like perpetual motion machine of silliness?
That is not to take away anything from criticism of the conservatives. They seem to be on a kind of autopilot that nobody really clear about, if it is going anywhere.
They better get hold of themselves and state their ideas. To keep them close to their body is not going to help them, how ever the “strategists” think.
Not being a conservative kind of character, ‘have to think that they need to clear out the mud.’
Will vote for conservatives regardless, since the alternative is not acceptable.
They just need to get some balls as it were and go for it.
To get elected for no reason does not qualify. You may not like it, though it is a major and valid point in a large scheme of things.
So state your case and hammer on.

  22. Of course, if the CPC paid any heed to the ‘net s. 13 of the CHRA would be toast.
But they don’t and so they have a goofy website and fewer visits than Garth Turner.
Each night I suspect Steve gets down on his knees and thanks a merciful God the the Liberals were dumb enough to elect M. Dion, because without this gift, the poor CPC would be polling in the teens. Largely because they are terrified to tell the truth about such things as the CHRC and global warming.
Lead, you dumb f**ks. Don’t kowtow to the polls or to the nasty media, just tell the story you actually believe.

  23. “I’m just a western separatist, with an axe to grind and a serious hate on for the Conservative Party of Canada. I find twelve billion dollar tax cuts to be particularly unpalatable, especially when implemented ahead of schedule, and prefer instead to try my luck with fifteen billion dollar Liberal tax hikes. I am, effectively, a Liberal.”

    Fixed it for you.

  24. “…you’re not in the opposition anymore, time to drop the childish taunting (and poor design) and act like the government.”
Makes sense, as SDA’ers appear happy to do the childish taunting for the CPC–and for free, no less!

  25. Aw bless, I just love that you SDA’ers think you’re the Conservatives’ core constituents, when in fact, you’re just one of several voting blocs (and the only one whose votes the Tories has already locked up).
That’s the problem with the Unite-the-Right strategy: the CPC no longer really needs to address your concerns because, really, where else are you (and your votes) gonna go?

  26. “childish taunting (and poor design)”
“But hey – but what do I know about web based communication?”
Um, your site features a dead prairie rodent as its mascot, is effectively a single long white page that scrolls on forever, and offers content that’s almost exclusively characterized by sarcastic headlines and glib commentary that beat the same dead horses ad nauseum.
But hey, there’s no doubt that you know your audience, and you give them what they want.

  27. EQ: “…commentary that beat[s] the same dead horses ad nauseum.”
This sounds like a description of our major media outlets, the main reason for this blog and others…

  28. EQ: “Um, your site”
…while you may have some valid points, you missed the whole gist of what is being discussed.
SDA is not posing as some major political party that wants to lead a nation of 33 million.
As well, the satire here helps as the old saying goes, ‘laugh to keep from crying’.
    “single long white page”.
Umm, how many topics do you cover per day, per week? Forget about per month or per year.
    “glib commentary”
Umm, how many governmental institutions, newspapers/TV reports and website posts have you exposed as error and caused a traceable change as a direct result?
But hey, there’s no doubt, proof is in the pudding there sugar.
    😉

  29. 47 male Professional Engineer
I read SDA as my primary news source as I had given up on the MSM a couple of years ago.
    Cheers!

  30. PAUL, THE CPC IS RUN BY A BUNCH OF LIBERALS. CONSERVATIVES ARE SUCH A SMALL MINORITY AS TO BE AN ENDANGERED SPECIES.

  31. I really hate the guy on prozak on the homepage,
Their press releases are totally lacking. Time after time I go there looking for info and there might be a summary if anything about a major media story, they need to get things like that running before an election.
Is there links to the blogging tories or even MP’s with blogs?
    Here’s the short budget.
    http://www.conservative.ca/EN/2972/
When the Reform party built Canada’s first national party website it was in part to bypass the “traditional media”=MSM.
    Now it seems,…..
PS when SDA gets to 10,000,000 hits does the lucky IP get 100 carbon credits?
