The response to this whole situation should have been the school principal writing a letter to the parent indicating that such a symbol was unacceptable to the school and if the child showed up at school with it again, he/she would be sent home. However school principals don’t want to take action on anything and like many people would prefer to shift the responsibility onto someone else (in this case social workers). Or if they wanted to be progressive this could have been a teaching moment (that’s teacher talk) to review the history of the symbol and its most recent use (Nazi and WWII) – however that would mean that teachers would actually have to find out information that is probably not included in the curriculum (which is beyond the skills for most teachers).
