The City of Toronto …

has issued “A Discussion of Public Policy Revenue Tools” in which it proposes nine new types of taxes including: a new tax on tobacco; a new tax on alcohol; a new tax on parking; a new tax on billboards; a new home-buying tax; a new tax on vehicle registration; a new driver’s license tax, a new road toll; and a new tax on entertainment tickets like movies, theatre, and concerts. The Mayor has also suggested a new garbage collection tax.

There’s a petition at the Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation.
A reader advises it could be a hot day of testimony at the Public Accounts Committee pension and insurance hearings. Webcast here, beginning at 3:30 Eastern.

  2. Just an FYI – they’re pushing through the ‘public consultations’ on these new taxes as quickly as possible. The first one is tomorrow night from 7-9pm at the Harbourfront Centre. The next one is in Etobicoke on May 15, followed by North York on the 17th and Scarborough on the 23rd at the Civic Centre. Call to register yourself at 416-338-0338.

  4. Toronto voted for Mayor Miller’s taxes – he should raise them as quickly as possible. Torontonians LOVE paying tax so their taxes should at least be doubled in the short term and rise at twice the rate of inflation thereafter.

    Carbon offsetting is one of the more popular ways to be green these days, especially for companies. And why not, you don’t actually have to change your lifestyle, you just buy away the guilt of emitting CO2. Not that carbon offset programs are bad, they’re not. But it’s important to figure out which ones are doing better than others.

  7. I think Ontario has the worst-run cities in Canada. When I moved to Toronto from Ottawa a few years ago I thought it would be a better run city but it wasn’t, it was just bigger.
    One of the most pressing needs in this province is a new municipal act that encourages party-like politics at the municipal level. As it stands it’s next to impossible to tell what one is voting for, hence all these loonie-left councillors that never ever seem to get voted out of office.

Over the previous year she had been snatched from her family, gone hungry in a concentration camp and been beaten for speaking her native Polish.     Only years later would she discover the full truth: that she was among some 250 children seized from their families as part of a Nazi attempt to improve the Aryan gene pool in pursuit of a mad dream of racial purity. In a letter written after World War II she said that she knew nothing about snatching children for racial purposes; all she had wanted was to adopt a war orphan. An illness had left her barren, and her husband, a German army officer, was stationed hundreds of miles away, in Paris. She was desperately lonely. More than 60 years later, the story emerges in part from a rare collection of documents held by the International Tracing Service, or ITS, a unit of the International Committee of the Red Cross, in the German town of Bad Arolsen.
    ‘Racially desirable’
    In files to which The Associated Press has been given access in the past seven months are orders from Heinrich Himmler, Adolf Hitler’s SS chief, to find children with “eindeutschungsfaehigskeit” — the potential to be Germanized. Other documents tell part of the children’s stories. One of those children was Alodia Witaszek, aka Alice Wittke. Luise Dahl had written to more than a dozen orphanages listed in the phone book before a response came asking for personal data about herself and her husband, Wilhelm — health, income, relationship to the Nazi party.
    The letter came from an association in Munich with an innocuous-sounding name, Lebensborn, roughly meaning Fountain of Life. But this was no ordinary adoption agency. Founded by Himmler in 1938, it started out running birthing homes where racially acceptable, mostly unwed mothers could bear their children for adoption by Nazi families. An estimated 20,000 were born in German Lebensborn homes — roughly half of them anonymously — and another 12,000 or so were born to mostly non-German mothers and Nazi fathers in Norway.
    After World War II broke out, Lebensborn took on an even more sinister role — it became an adoption agency for hundreds of “racially desirable” toddlers and young children seized from their families in Poland and other occupied territories and forcibly Germanized. “I believe it is correct if we gather up particularly racially acceptable small children from Polish families and place them in special, not too large children’s care centers and homes,” reads an order in ITS files which Himmler sent to SS leaders in 1941.

The usual blathering. Canada is acting as an agent of American imperialism. Canada is facilitating the bloody occupation of Iraq. Canada is “in a network of disclosed and undisclosed centres of physical and mental torture, like Guantanamo Bay in illegally occupied Cuban territory.” Not only are we told to stop participating in the pacification of Afghanistan, but “Canada must – immediately, and at the minimum – open its doors to Iraqis and Afghans attempting to flee the horror being inflicted on their homelands.”
    Canada does not need any external enemies; we clearly have all we can handle at home.

What I’m wondering vis a vis all of these extra taxes, I guess the result of Rosedale Socialist David Miller’s not even being able to manage the financial resources Toronto already has, is how will anyone OTHER THAN A ROSEDALE SOCIALIST, the very rich, or the social-benefits parasites be able to afford to live in Toronto?
    Good stewardship means that once you’ve paid for and maintained what already exists, there’s still some left over for rainy days–and that those who are good stewards ARE REWARDED for being responsible and accountable.
    Moonbat Mayor Miller rewards only the ne’er do wells and parasites, meaning “cash for life” to those who’ve shown no initiative whatsoever and who pay no taxes, while bleeding the hardworking Toronto taxpayers to death.
    Or, to use another analogy, Miller’s cutting down the tree with the branch these parasites are sitting on. No tree? No branch. It’s that simple, so how come he doesn’t seem to get it?

Not only did Toronto set a record for the number of people running for council..they also had somebody with not only council experience…but budget experience as well….to chose from for mayor. They voted in the same sadsack group of self serving professional politicians that had already started Toronto on the downward spiral.
    Voter turnout was horrendous even though there were quality people to pick from in virtually every ward. They returned the same people who sold out for positions under Miller…voted themselves pay increases…fought for longer terms……
    The people had a choice. The people have spoken. Now they will pay for it.

    Egg producer wins court case
    Local egg producer Shawn Carmichael will have to face a new hearing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) over his egg grading station, after a federal court recently overturned a decision cancelling that station’s registration.
    The court ruled the CFIA did not follow proper procedure, but it also pointed to questionable conduct on Carmichael’s part.
    In the decision delivered in Montreal, Deputy Judge Maurice Lagacé concluded “there could be a reasonable apprehension of bias in the impartial observer” regarding the conduct of the CFIA director who cancelled Carmichael’s registration.
    The judge also ruled there was “a denial of procedural fairness” because the CFIA denied Carmichael an oral hearing and did not re-inspect his farm.
    But the judge also concedes that Carmichael sold eggs while under suspension, referring to this as conduct that could see him punished.
    The judge ordered the CFIA to hold a new hearing before a different director.
    CFIA staff were not sure Friday about the timing of a new hearing, or whether the agency plans to appeal the federal court ruling.
    Carmichael, 36, said he feels “very vindicated” by the ruling.
    “We knew that they (CFIA) were breaking the law,” said Carmichael.
    The Shanly-area farmer pleaded guilty to five charges relating to production of eggs without quota last October, following a raid at his farm the previous March that led to a standoff between police and Carmichael, backed by members of the Leeds and Grenville Landowners Association….-
