  1. dangerous stuff Kate.
    your mocking CBC Pravda directly.
your blog could fall to the bottom of their page.
they are almost gleeful this morning to have a Tory in the gunsights (whoops– no guns in Liberano land)
their top story. which is odd , usually have a sympathetic view of the Khadrs as their top story.

  2. After martin’s R + D money announcement for universities this morning, one of the media asked why the neg military ad still running in Quebec? He said it NEVER aired in Quebec!
    In Canada.
I did not make this up.

  3. Dithers’ responded to a question about the military ad by basically saying it is a recruiting ad as “we’ve said in the past we want to build the forces by 5000…’.
    In Canada.
I couldn’t make this stuff up.

  4. tories out manuevered them . they dumped the candidate already.going for a no taint campaign.
an example to the NDP -Svend
an example to the Libs- pick a cad , any cad.

  5. Also at PMPM’s news conference today he implied the ad was simply to point out the deficiencies in Harper’s policy, that spreading them out across many cities was bad policy. He dragged in the need for critical mass and said that was what the ad was about.
I see critical mass in his statements but it isn’t comprised of anything but poo.

  6. “they dumped the candidate already.going for a no taint campaign.
an example to the NDP -Svend”
I hope not. Svend works hard for one of Hot Cross Hedy Fry’s chosen identity groups.
His identification with this group could help pull her claws outs out of Vancouver Centre.
And if worse comes to worst and he is sent back to Ottawa , he makes for a very entertaining buffoon.
I don’t think there is a person in Canada that would say Hot Cross has ever made them smile.

  7. Not ‘attack’ ads if they’re true, Martin says
Liberal leader also says he had no intention of insulting armed forces
    Jan. 12, 2006. 08:47 AM
    CANADIAN PRESS
Prime Minister Paul Martin says a controversial series of TV commercials unleashed by the Liberals this week can’t be called attack ads if they’re true.
The Liberal leader told CTV’s Canada AM that he viewed all of the ads, including one ad pulled from the party’s website that suggests Canadian cities would be subject to military occupation under a Conservative government. Martin says the ad was lifted because he didn’t think it was very good.
Martin was asked why, if he said he didn’t want to resort to “drive-by smears,” his campaign was turning its guns on Stephen Harper and the Tories.
“I think if you’re in public life, you’ve got to be prepared to stand behind what you have said,” Martin said in reference to comments Harper made 10 years ago calling Canada a northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term.
“That’s not an attack ad. That is: You have a set of values; I have a set of values. Let’s debate.”
Martin said an ad that outraged present and former military personnel was not meant to target soldiers.
    ……..
The ad was pulled from the Liberal party’s English website but still appeared Wednesday afternoon on the party’s French website.
“I have increased soldiers’ pay; I have a huge admiration for the soldiers,” Martin said. “Take a look at what we’re attacking. There’s support for the soldiers.”
He said Harper’s plan to establish a permanent military presence in major Canadian cities as a ready aid in emergencies would dilute the Forces and create an administrative and logistical nightmare.
“It’s not me,” Martin said. The chief of defence staff, Gen. Rick “Hillier’s the one who said `I want to have a Canada Command; I want to be able to really have top-flight soldiers in top-flight positions with top-flight equipment.’
“You can’t do that if it’s spread out all across the country.”
The comments were the most extensive analysis Martin has offered on Liberal defence policy in the entire campaign so far. >>>

  8. When first asked about this Martin began to say this really wasnt an issue. The reporter cut in and said they have been deluged by e-mails infuriated at the military bashing. Does anyone know for sure this ad ran in Quebec. PM stated a number of times this ad did not run anywhere -the reporter should have checked this out in advance and contradicted him if untrue. Guess the internet doesnt count. If this was just a difference between setting up a concentrated unit ready to go in a natural disaster vs spreading out too thin, what does the poem Flanders Fields have to do with this. The Liberals dont care about the military vote, soldiers dont vote Liberal but boy did they underestimate the support the military has with the regular populace.

  9. maybe its time for another contest Kate ??
Like your “what kind of Conservative are you” one you did, but this is now it could be the best take on those ads
as the 40 below Conservative guy from last round . . . My take,
    Soldiers
    In the streets.
    Of our cities. In Toronto.
    With shovels.
    Waiting for a snow flurry.
    In Canada !!
We are not making this up.

The first segment of video. Media scrum after the R + D money announcement
Dithers was pretty much owned by the media about the negetive military ad.
    Timeline:
1:10 – Dithers “The ad was pulled because the ad was pulled”
2:45 – reporter in french “explain to me in which way the words ‘soldiers with guns in our cities’ is linked to the deconcentration of our military forces in Canada as you suggested this morning at CTV?”
6:40 – reporter in english “You defended all of the ads and personally approved them. The fundamental message about the mititary is included in the french language Quebec ads that are airing right now. Why is it ok for Quebec but not for Canada to hear those ads?”
6:58 – Dithers responds ” That ad did not appear in Quebec. Period. That ad did not appear…it appeared…it appeared no where”
So I suppose the internet does not exist? or is the ad ‘notwithstanding’ because it technically isn’t being aired on T.V.?

  11. Still runing in Quebec. Amazing! I wonder how long it will take some clever commentator in Quebec to remember that the Liberals are the party that actually did send armed troops into the streets of Quebec in 1970.

  12. I enjoyed reading that the reporter used the word “fundamentally” in his question at 6:40.
    Here.
    In Canada.
    I’m not making this up.

  13. Paulie, the day not over yet……
Maybe we need someone in Quebec to call into CBC CTV or CPAC and tell us if in fact this ad is running there????
There is nothing that you can say now Paulie….
You have scared the shit out of a lot of people.

  14. The CBC website has a better ‘quote’ on what I heard at the news conference.
‘The ad was intended to criticize the Conservatives’ policy because it would spread soldiers too far apart across the country, Martin said.
“We want to have a critical mass,” Martin said. “That would allow large numbers of soldiers to respond to natural disasters at home or to security crises abroad.”‘

  15. Let me make this clear, IF PAUL MARTIN WAS AROUND WHEN WITH DIEF THE CHEIF, TOMMY DOUGLAS & LESTER B. PEARSON WERE, They would have thrown him down the steps & out of the building at parl. hill. & his old man would have kicked him right in the ass a few times.
That’s the kind of Canada they built
    Iam not making this up

  16. Kate,
Let me be very, very clear when I say I believe that fundementally we need a liberal ad parady contest.
Pleeeeeaase, with a big bowl of Conservative majority ice cream and a cherry on top!

  17. As I usually do after reading your Round Table columns, I checked out the other bloggers to see if anything of importance was being said. You have to hand it to Glyn, that lonely Alberta Lieberal (besides Screeching Annie). He yammers on about the Stratigic Defence Initiative (SDI) and how “having U.S. nukes on Canadian soil is something I would never want to see.” He has obviously never studied Canadian history otherwise he would have known that Canada did have nukes here on Canadian soil for a long time. These American nukes were on our fighter interceptors and Bomarc missles.
Glyn, if you can’t find your junior high history books then Google it, eh.
Oh yes, Another couple of bang-on columns. Keep up the great work Kate.

  18. Steven Harper is a soup nazi.
He wants to take away your soup.
    For two weeks.
    No soup for you.
    In our cities.
    In Canada.
I did not make that up.

  19. Did I hear correctly on CTV news net this morning that Martin claims property rights in the constitution would result in CHILD LABOUR? Media rep from CTV following Harper actually broke out in laughter about it.

  20. Stephen Harper actually announced that he wants to increase frickin’ sharks with laser beams on their heads in our cities.
    Canadian cities.
Frickin’ sharks with frickin’ laser beams.
    On their frickin’ heads.
    In our cities.
    In Canada.
We did not make this up.

  21. Paul Martin tell us that Stephen Harper’s
promise to protect property rights will
lead to the violation of child labour laws.
So,under a Conservative government parents all
across Canada will tell their children
“Pick up your toys, clean up your room,
    Stephen Harper says so!”
    I’m not making this up

  22. To Colin’s post.
I have been trying to let people know that internet publishing is still considered publishing. The Liberal.ca website is hosted by Magma Communications, Ltd., a subsidiary of Primus Communications.
ISP’s aren’t free. Hence, the Libs statement that they never paid to air the ad (John Duffy on Mike Duffy’s infamous Countdown episode), Now they are stating they never ‘aired’ the ad (via Angry in GWN’s post on a letter from McLellan’s campaign office to a young Tory).
They just keep backpeddling and backpeddling….
    on a tandem bicycle….
    like circus clowns….
with Tammy Faye Bakker makeup jobs….
    In Canada…
    We didn’t make this up….

    Author: The Ads by GWN
I recieved this email today from Calev R., an Edmonton Centre resident who sent an email to Anne McLellan complaining about the atrocious ads.
He sent me their answer and it is below in its entirety.
Please note that they say the PM did not approve the ads when today the PM admitted that he approved the ad!
    ————-
    Dear Calev.
Thank you for writing to Anne’s campaign and for your comments about recent ads that have appeared on the Liberal site.
Please be assured that Anne does not support negative campaign ads and has always run positive campaigns based on her record and accomplishments.
The national campaigns of both the Liberal and Conservative parties have produced what some would consider to be negative campaign adds. The
Liberal ad related to military presence in Canadian cities was never approved by the Prime Minister and was never aired on Television. While it did appear briefly on the Liberal website, the ad was pulled because it did not effectively convey the message intended.
What it was supposed to highlight was the fact that Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party have made statements that they would like to
disperse Canada’s military presence further by providing a stronger military presence
in urban cities. This flies in the face of the military’s own plans to rationalize their operations.
Anne regrets that some people were offended by these Ads. Anne has tremendous respect for the significant contributions that members of Canada’s Armed Forces make to Canada.
Thank you for conveying your concerns to Anne. >>

  28. Heres a backhanded CBC Pravda headline.
ENERGY PRICE DECLINES REDUCE CANADAS TRADE SURPLUS.
Energy is Canadas Trade surplus.meanwhile in the business section –Oil prices carry TSX to new highs.
though I do like Martins name, Liberal and Idiot all with in eyeball distance in the voting section.

  29. I think this is a thinly veiled attempt to tell Quebecers that if they were to separate PM Harper would respond with troops. That is why it remained on the french Liberal site.
Who is he appealing to with this? Separatists? Drive votes right into BQ hands. Federalists? How exactly would Martin respond? Flailing wildly hoping something will stick. Not thinking through anything.
Shame on him and the Liberals.

  30. “Paul Martin tell us that Stephen Harper’s
promise to protect property rights will

Apparently the media is openly laughing at the suggestion.
    Did he really say this?
The new campaign moniker for the Liberal campaign:
“I am having a political Chernobyl election breakdown.”
NwC cock up during the debate. (Key clause which allowed the Liberal Charter to be patriated.)
Goon squads in the cities ad.(Ad hominem attack on the professional military) Then claims ad didn’t run; but it is running/ran in Quebec.
Property rights will lead to violation of child labour laws. (Where is the logical connector in this argument?)
Never mind grasping at straws, this looks like a shaky grasp at putting logic to work for you.
What is with all the incessant non sequitors?

  31. usually its the Tories that eat their own. now the Libs will.
any bets to the timing of when the Libs toast PMPM. bets start from EDay. but you can bet -11 days if you want.

  32. Dear Paul Martin,
As a staunch defender for the philosophy of Liberalism I have 2 words for you.
    SHUT UP
    Yours sincerely,

  33. My entry for Liberal Ad,
Harper doesn’t have a moustache now.
But he hasn’t told us if will grow a moustache in the future.
Hitler had a moustache. He was bent on world domination.
Is Harper bent on world domination?
    We just don’t know.
The Liberal party will create a moustache registry to keep Canadians safe from world domineering people.
    With moustaches.
    In Canada.

  34. Stephen Harper wants to give tax credits for parents to access day care.
He also wants to enshrine property rights in the Constitution.
Does Stephen Harper want to bribe parents to send their children to labour camps?
We don’t know. He just won’t say.
    Camps guarded by soldiers.
    With guns.

    In Canada!

  36. The Edmonton SUN is quoting Anne McLelland today as saying Paul Martin didn’t approve of the Military attack ad. CTV.ca is quoting Paul Martin as saying he approved all 12 ads. Which of these two top guns, Paul or Anne ,are we to believe?

  37. “I actually DID approve those adds,…. just before I did NOT approve those adds.”
    Or
“It all depends on what your definition of “did” is.”

Liberal Ads: From Tragedy To Farce
The infamous “soldiers with guns in our streets” Liberal attack ad is attracting both outrage and derision.
The first reaction is to be expected whenever attack ads are aired. Usually, the greater the outrage expressed by the target, the more likely the ads have touched on an uncomfortable truth or weakness.
Usually. But not in this case, where the target has turned out not to be Stephen Harper but our servicemen, who rightly take great offence at the suggestion that they would willingly turn their guns on the people they serve.
Perhaps the bright boys and girls in the Toronto ad agency that cooked up this ad have never actually known any servicemen, or learned anything about the military except fashionably progressive anti-military cliches about baby killers and armed goons in Iraq and Vietnam.. Nothing else could explain how otherwise well-trained advertising people could have come up with such an offensive message and let it go as far as it did.
The second reaction will probably prove much more deadly to these ads, and to the Liberals’ hopes on which they were pinned, than all the denunciations by the military lobby and Tory MPs combined.
The style and tone of the ads, especially the “soldiers with guns” ad, lent themselves to easy parody, from the choppy incomplete sentences with pregnant pauses in between to the ominous martial snare drum and timpani rolls, right down to the killer “We did not make this up” line (which suggests that maybe, just maybe, the whole thing is, to quote Susan Murray, bullshit.)
The sting has been taken out of the whole negative ad campaign because of the fast and wide spread of parodies in the press and online. Get people mad or scared and they might listen. Get people laughing at you and you’ve lost them.
It couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Liberals: it’s buried Red Book V under a pile of one-liners.
And that, quite frankly, is beyond parody.
