A NY Sun article on Pajamas Media. A heads up to readers – I’m looking seriously at signing up with Roger’s group and taking some ads. With the increase of traffic, the hosting fees are starting to creep up. I’ve never had a tip jar, because until now the monthly fees cost me less than a case of beer.
Thoughts? Which would you prefer?

Advertising.
Advertising but perferably for pornography
hey, homeless man, how are you logging in?
whatever works for you, Kate, I was actually looking for a tip jar this morning…
I have no problem with ads… I’ll even click on a few now and again to help keep your rates up.
I agree that Tip Jars are not particularly effective… I always say to myself, “Hey, I should toss a bit in there” and promise to do it ‘later’ and guess what? ‘Later’ never becomes ‘now’.
Have you thought of applying for a Liberal ad contract? Think of it, you could roast the Libranos with your blog while collecting money from them for doing it. When Harper manages in the next election to again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, you will be well positioned with tons of Liberal ad money to launch your own bid for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Advertising in moderation as well as Tip Jar for some of those great posts that get us readers all excited. No one says it has to be an entire side of 5 ads or anything. A couple ads and a tip jar. That’s my suggestion (if Mentally Challenged’s idea doesn’t work).

A slight correction …Think of it, you could roast the Libranos with your blog while collecting money from them for doing it. Them is us so effectively it’s a Tip Jar. Go ahead Kate. You could advertise the Libranos movie..
Prime Ditherer..”Within 10 years I’m taking the family legit.”
Give up beer.
It’s your blog. Do what works for you. Thanks for asking.
Is there the option of getting a sponsorship (it’s only a bad word if liberals are involved) from conservative organizations? Doesn’t require click through ads or anything like that…
Ads are fine. I have some Google ones on my site but they don’t generate much income. I have already signed up with Pajama Media so we will see what it generates.
Thanks for the Animalsalanche last night/today
Advertising — your page alreadys loads very quickly. And even Google ads provide more revenue that one might think.
I am surprised that there aren’t grants available for this kind of thing yet (and I glad as well). That’ll come when some left wing university project requires it.
Go with the ads, or whatever free market device you can use. Have the tip jar handy for when you dance real nice. Shake it baby, shake it.
“yeah baby, yeeaagghhh!” Austin Powers.
Whatever works…….we could even start a save the dead gopher fund if ya want, stand on the street corner and collect tips…..ya’ll better be female if ya try to pick me up though… 😉
You’ll probably think this is totally off the wall, but what about benefit auctions on eBay? Readers can volunteer what they don’t mind getting rid of anyway, and you get the proceeds. It also avoids the inevitable perception with paid advertising that you’re not entirely independant. Just a thought….
Do it the way of nike. Slavelabour!
Chain some foreigners to your computer and kick back and DRINK!! yeeeeeehawwwwwwww
On the “raise the bridge or lower the water” theme, would the cost side be worth considering?
Kate, do you have high-speed DSL or cable internet access in Deslisle which, I understand, is only 41 kn s/w of Saskatoon? If so, is self-hosting an option?
I do that on a spare PC, with about 3-5,000 (real, non-bot) pageviews per month. Even with search engine bots, hardly arouses the PC from its slumbers.

There’s also this, for further flavour:

Good idea, Eric, except that option would definately raise the costs – my current dialup connection is less than half the cost of hispeed.
Bummer. You mean that you don’t have your own telephone company in Deslisle, like we do in Aylmer?
Our telco, Amtelecom, offers local phone service (affiated with Bell for LD), cable TV (standard & digital), dialup and cable high speed internet (5 megs downstream, 512 upstream). It’s an income trust. And only 3 blocks away so that it’s real easy to walk over and grab some throats if anything goes wrong. It’s the last private telco in Ontario.
Oh well, it was a thought.
More, since tip/advertising/pledge options probably detract from the site.
Meatriarchy uses http://canadianwebhosting.com. They have a variety of low-cost hosting plans. Meatriarchy loads fairly quickly, using WordPress, and the counter at the bottom indicates 21,566 visits since Jan 22/05.
Just a thought.
I’m getting that in 8 days.
Go with the advertising – Most of the other blogs I visit have advertising and you know you provide a service and should get paid but as someone else said “later never becomes now” with the Tip jars.
I suggest paying more and more personally, out of your own pocket, followed by bankruptcy, eviction, and a promising new career selling pencils. Just a suggestion.
Thanks…
