   Chinada has a huge trade deficit with China because our governments are full of traitors.

         1. Yeah Kate I agree, but the crap is so pervasive, it’s hard to find what you need, if you plan to avoid it. I try, but at times there is no other choice. I’m of the type that would cut off my nose to spite my face if it pissed me off, I would literally spend money to not buy Chinese crap, but at times it ain’t possible. Hopefully we are at last, finally waking up from our collective stupidity of trading with the Chicoms.

            1. Agreed, GerryK. And not everything states country of origin. I see a lot of labels that state “Imported for” or “Imported by” or “Made in Canada with domestic and imported ingredients.”

               Alas, trading with the Chicoms is here to stay, unfortunately. Costco had skids of face masks and Walmart had boxes and boxes of them. All made in China, naturally.

            NO! Not if there are NO other choices. They have the market cornered on many things. I’ve been referring to “cheep Chinese junk” for at least a decade, because everything I buy that’s made there is exactly that.

            What about alternatives? There were none. I checked with everything I had to purchase, and there were no alternatives.

            If it’s something you can’t do without, then you are forced to buy it. It’s NOT the fault of the victims of the scam that they have no other choice!

5. Ontario Kate, first off there are many people can only afford cheap crap, second it’s crap because the business people squeeze the price. This model guarantees that there will always be a market, and it is the walmart effect of importing. Chinese are quite capable of producing quality products, I know because I saw their domestic goods. Also I’v read several article by people who lived over there, and they concur with that sentiment. And then there is my friend who goes to asia , on a regular basis, and he says the same as I do. I find those with the strongest opinions on various topics, are quite often those with the least knowledge on said topic. But yes, if we quit buying made in China, we will quit perpetuating that business model, and empowering China financially.

   1. Fair enough, NME. Change has to begin somewhere so I refuse to purchase anything made in China.

My husband used to travel to Japan frequently on business, and his observation, confirmed by Japanese friends, is that many Chinese people travel to Japan to shop, and not just chasing Western luxury goods (or perhaps luxury goods manufactured in Europe by the Chinese). They look to buy products manufactured in China for the Japanese market, which are though to be superior to products manufactured for their domestic market.

      1. Tamsin, your comment brings to mind a couple of memories from my childhood. The first is of a trinket box in my grandmother’s house. Stamped on the bottom was “Made in Occupied Japan.” I was too young to understand what that meant. The second recollection is of a cartoon in a magazine (The New Yorker?) where two American ladies are shopping and one of them, looking at the bottom of an item states, “Made in the U.S.A. Ugh!” Country of origin means different things to different people, I guess.

      Your simplistic thinking ignores the reality. You can not boycott products you need for which there are no competitors. We are being forced to buy junk, because that’s all that’s available, as I’ve written above.
