“There are a couple of times when my assistant put in for a breakfast when I was on a plane, and they say I should have not claimed because I should have eaten that breakfast,” she said. “Those breakfasts are pretty awful. If you want ice-cold Camembert with broken crackers, have it.”

Right up there with “entitled to my entitlements”
That’s a bit harsh. The airline caterers have to work within the constraints imposed by the bean counters, so they are not solely to blame.
“Senate business is very broad,” said Conservative Sen. Nancy Ruth. “I’m a feminist activist, so my angle on Canadian life is to look at gender-based analysis……..”
Holy ^%**&^%%$ crap, what in gods name is running our country???
Here’s another by the “Liberal” pinhead with hair –
“I am always worried about the fact that Canadians are incredibly cynical about what goes on in Parliament and what goes on across our democratic institutions.”
Really? So censoring information is the answer obviously to the marxist drama substitute teacher.
BTW what the &^%R^%^%&*& is a “Democratic Institution” anyway? He’ll need to prove that one.
“There are a couple of times when my assistant put in for a breakfast when I was on a plane…”
Sounds like someone put in for reimbursement on a meal they never ordered or ate.
Seems to suggest the nabobs in the upper chamber took umbrage at the Harper appointments and decided to provide some dirt to the media upset at Duffy going off the reservation.
Its also noticed that the same laurentian elite went all out to oppose any measure to reform the upper chamber around the same time.
But because they pushed an agenda to attack one they now have to contend with the same scrutiny placed on their own dubious actions.
Maybe this may explain the muted reporting on Duffy now.
This also puts the issue of senate reform back into play with only two choices reform or abolish, status quo not an option.
Quotation by PMSH warning Senate
“don’t make this an election issue”
To be fair, airline food is pretty crappy.
“If you want ice-cold Camembert with broken crackers, have it.”
Planes do have microwave ovens. Camembert nukes up very nicely about 40 seconds. Just ask for it. As to the broken crackers, ask for an undamaged packet or two.
Claiming an expense on a meal not even ordered is fraud.
Ruth is a feminist activist openly lesbian Progressive senate appointee of Adrianne Clarkson. Clarkson herself being a CBC producer/broadcaster appointed to the Governor General role by Jean Chretien.
from wiki:
While Clarkson’s appointment as the Canadian vicereine was generally welcomed at first, she caused some controversy during her time serving as the Queen’s representative, mostly due to costs incurred in the operation of her office…
Time to move to a “negative” proof: if you are a senator, you have to prove you didn’t have your hand in the cookie jar.
Seriously, 120 of them under investigation? As the saying goes, that isn’t profiling, that is a description of the suspect.
Wasn’t Harper going to clean this crap up?
And people wonder why the Tea Party exists in the States, and the Reform party started here…
I can’t recall EVER agreeing with Mulcair on anything – until now.
Fire. Them. All.
Long past time we rid ourselves of these self-indulging, self-entitled, elitist parasites.
Have I made myself clear?
Who is running the country? Don’t worry it’s not our senators, they are running up expense accounts.
Some of them are making some useful contributions while they are at it, but on the whole the Senate is a good idea gone bad.
I read some of the comment at NP and here. Notwithstanding the personal moral failings of some Senators, I think many who beak off fail to understand the purpose of the Senate.
It truly is supposed to be a chamber of “sober second thought” to protect our nation from an elected gang of thugs (from any party). Any who have experience on H of C issues and worked with MPs understand that it is all politics all the time. MPs deal with dozens to hundreds of issues all day every day. Deep thought and/or the implications going forward with any given policy are rarely applied. It’s all about polling and winning and doing what the whip says, regardless of personal doubts or misgivings. As for Committee work at the MP level it is mostly a farce. It is all partisan all the time.
By contrast the Senate can call witnesses who actually have something of value to add to debate, as opposed to “ramming” a Bill through. In a way the Senate is a steward of the Westminster system. By and large most Senators have achieved more than most, don’t need the job or the money and are genuinely interested in a better Canada. Those who wish to destroy and defame the Institution based on the moral failings of a few are (in my opinion) reckless and dangerous.
Judging by the new and repeated barrage of slurs directed against Senator Wallin, I’m guessing the coppers have got nuthin’ that they think will stick in court…and let’s not forget the Commissioner of the RCMP is a Deputy Minister and answers to political Minister…thanks to jean Chretien.
To my eye our Senate only emphasises the criticism that the real difference between the political right and left is mostly bullshit rhetoric. Appointed, self-interested partisan hacks, the lot of them.
Abolish this disgrace.
Why do we have to pay for their food anyways. Seriously you have to eat every day. Why is that our responsibility to give you spoiled people something to eat. I’ll bet very few of us at SDA expect someone else to pay for our meals.

I have traveled on Transport Canada business in the past and if your dinner is beyond the daily allowance you pay for it out of your own pocket. I have stopped at Subway and brought a sub onto the no-frills flight before.
These senators are pigs at the trough. Makes one wonder if they’ve ever visited the official website.
http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?id=25049
Not only are the poor Senators forced to consume ice-cold Camembert with broken crackers, they don’t even have Grey Poupon on the plane!
It is not Federal civil service travel policy to make people eat airline or hotel dog shit.

This is just the Auditor General showboating, spending millions to recover thousands. The rules were loose and it is no crime to follow those rules. At the time, senate rules even allowed travel for partisan purposes.
Scar, from the Values & Ethics guide for the Public Service…
Integrity
Public servants shall serve the public interest by:
3.1 Acting at all times with integrity and in a manner that will bear the closest public scrutiny, an obligation that may not be fully satisfied by simply acting within the law.
These senators have stretched the letter of the law rather than obeying the spirit of it.
I have a XXXXing medium black coffee in a cardboard cup for breakfast that I PAY $1.75 for with my own money, I’d LOVE Ice-cold camembert with broken crackers for free you fat ****ing pigs.
Abolish the senate, cut my taxes and audit the MP’s.
I lost faith in the institution of the Senate when Mulroney stacked it to get his GST through. We have known for years that these crooks have been pillaging the system. We had one collecting his salary while living in Mexico a few years ago What took so long to audit this circus and why wasn’t this being done all along?
“In a way the Senate is a steward of the Westminster system.”
Very well said. I agree. Our parliament without the senate would be like a car without brakes.
The senate can and has served as a check on parliamentary power.
Senators need to be elected to further legitimize their power, not appointed as is the tradition or abolished as some would want.
The thing about the Senators is that they did not have to stretch the law, they created their law for expenses. Anyone questioning the appropriateness of a $10? breakfast is an ass and that includes the Auditor General.
It is doubtful that they have visited the site…

As much as my heart (and early Reform idealism) wants to agree with the idea of elected Senators…I just look at the cesspool to the south and conclude it better to stick with the problems we have.
“I lost faith in the institution of the Senate when Mulroney stacked it to get his GST through.”
Liberal senators were obstructing parliament. Proof that it was partisan obstruction and not ‘sober second thought’ is that Chretien later ran and was elected on the promise of repealing the GST and did not even try to repeal it or tinker with it in any way.
And no I do not like the GST. Albertan’s had never had a sales tax prior to the GST and now because of the GST, Prentice will probably feel there is less political fallout to be had from bringing us a new provincial sales tax to fund continued Public Union pandering.
Appointing senators have long been a Liberal Party of Canada plum to award their loyal foot soldiers, especially in places like Alberta where we rarely elect Liberal MPs. To appoint Liberal senators to occupy Alberta senate seats is to spit in the eyes of Albertans.
We should have the right to elect senators who Albertans think have the interest of Alberta at heart, not have satraps appointed who have been and will continue to be yes-men to a Party which most Albertans reject in general elections.
Horrible c*unts K99. Great suppurating odious horribly vicious c*unts. But you need to love them, see. Can’t have misogyny.
From the G&M article, as to who the Senator is: “But it’s easy to cast her as a figure of entitlement. She’s the daughter of Harry Jackman, who built up the Empire Life insurance business, and sister of former Ontario lieutenant-governor Hal Jackman. And part of her complaint yesterday was that the auditors don’t understand “what it’s like to fly around the world to get here to Ottawa.”
A Paul Martin appointee, another member of the eastern elite who all PM’s seem to be enamored of,instead of appointing real Canadians who have accomplished something and might actually have some sober thoughts.
It’s an exclusive club, from the Senate to the MP’s to the top civil servants, all of whom love to live it up on our dime.
We need a go**amned revolution, not another election.
I ate cold pizza this morning on my way to work to earn enough so my kids can have french toast, bacon’n’eggs and over priced cereal.
My taxes pay for Pam’s entire life. Can I expense my breakfast as well as hers? Both were cold and yuccky.
“This is just the Auditor General showboating, spending millions to recover thousands.”
An accountant examining accounts and holding people accountable.
This is the cost of disarming a partisan political attack with a grandiose show of accountability.
The Liberals demanded accountability and they’re getting it. They wouldn’t have demanded it if they didn’t plan to use it as an issue come election time. Worth every penny spent to do it in my opinion.
Where, I ask, is the $400 million stolen by the LPC under the Little Liar from Shawinigan’s watch. Let’s start with that accountability shall we?
“Why do we have to pay for their food anyways.”
There is a long running global practice for most travelling employees called a “Per Diem”. Most Canadian industries adhear to a “daily meal allowance” for travelling employees, and there’s no reason that our elected public officials should not be subject to the same.
It’s part of a wage package, accountable and fair.

There was a time in this country when politicians were selected on their accomplishments in life, after they had led a somewhat exemplary life. The kind of life that gave them status was rearing a family, paying a mortgage, staying out of jail, paying their way, you know the kind of life that most of us try to accomplish. Now the politicians are selected because they are so well educated with their political science degrees and humanitarian and women’s studies BA’s that they can tell us all how to live and because of this they are above the common milieu. It is time to hold a national referendum on where we are going with this country. It is time for elected senators, term limits, no appointments, elected SCOC judges on term limits, removal from the UN, cessation of foreign aid, and a host of other common sense rules to keep this country on the level. I’m looking at the next election and I wonder how many Canadians will fall for the BS that the Americans swallowed in the last two American elections.
God help us if they appoint “screechin’ Annie”…there’s an Albertan I’m grateful has gone home to roost.
Peter–if they don’t need the job or the money, then they should shog off. Cause we don’t need them AT ALL. They are an IMPOTENT chamber of “sober second thought”–their only recourse is delay–and this is a PERFECT illustration of their sense of entitlement. If, as you say, they don’t need the money, then why don’t they buy their own breakfasts, having spit on what the plebs eat? Indeed, why don’t they serve FOR FREE?
I got a little whiff of entitlements gone bad.
Actually, when I travel on business, my employer pays all my expenses, including meals. If I take a client golfing, he pays for my green fees as well as my guest(s). If I take a client and his wife to dinner, my employer pays for the whole evening. I may even take my wife along, which her meal would be included as well. I may even take my own staff for lunch because that might be the only time we get a chance to meet due to busy schedules. Boss pays for it. I use a company vehicle for personal use, which I pay tax on. Its still a lot less than if I had to purchase the vehicle myself. All of this is the norm in the private sector, and legal.
We expect our elected officials to fly economy class or even use air miles that requires them to have several connector flights. I can see it now, the defense minister sitting beside a family on a plane while talking to the Israeli prime minister about strategic plans against ISIS. All this because Joe welder thinks the business of government is no different than him going on vacation to Mexico.
I’m thinking that government business should have a degree of confidentiality until such time as it is introduced for public policy debate. I know we keep our business activities close to the vest.
However, if I or any of my coworkers commit fraud against the company, we would be fired with cause. No severance. Might even be criminal charges if warranted.
It would be interesting if your PM appointed someone like Kate to be a Senator.
This is all beginning to sound like the $16 orange juice deally at the London hotel. London is outrageously expensive and I guess compared to a Tim Horton’s double double in Lethbridge, a $16 orange juice in London seems ludicrous. However taken in the context of a London restaurant it is just another orange juice. Is this the point of the investigation, nit picking over a $10 dollar breakfast? I avoid airline junk food myself, however the byline of this thread needs to be, “They should all be elected.”
try grasping the concept of the “broken window” policy of policing. This concept is not just relevant to policing but also applies to all aspects of social life, never mind preventive maintenance in industry. Choke the sucker off when small and you will stop most of the “large”.
As well, they are producing expense accounts with out the back-up paperwork. Every small business owner knows it’s “no tickee, no laundry” when it comes to business expenses; CRA makes sure of that. And even then, expenses get disallowed. We need to send in some of the nastier-minded CRA auditors to review senate expenses. Particularly the auditors who are determined to disallow, no matter what the proof.
She’s an Ontario senator, hometown Toronto. How does she have to “fly around the world to get here to Ottawa”?
I am a compassionate person, and I would have no qualms okaying an expense item for breakfast if it was a double double and a cruller from Timmies. You know, like us regular folk do at airports.
I don’t believe this problem would be nearly so common if more people were chosen from say, Delisle, Sk, for example…
*recall Kate mentioning something similar to this.
I don’t really have a problem with those serving the country gaining this sort of good treatment, but the attitude of those raking in these entitlements and then having them say idiocies like, cold Camembert and crackers isn’t good enough, … tell that to the ex-military folks that are going without. While Canada spends less than so many other countries feel is necessary to protect their citizens.
It stinks then.
Perhaps geography is not her strong suit. But the good Senator would be tuckered out by flying West from Toronto to get to Ottawa, it’s a long ,long way.
Don’t forget the billions of dollars the senate saved us a few years ago:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2010/11/17/canadian-senate-kills-climate-change-bill/
smithers me boy, apples and oranges, you example does not compare to these fat pols porking out on tax dollars. I also used to travel a lot, and have expenses paid for. But to suggest that ruth needed to “meet” (have a private discussion) on the airplane is bullshit. If things are that important she would be on private transport and not public, and public is what is being discussed.
“what it’s like to fly around the world to get here to Ottawa.”
Don’t laugh, it happens. Senators get reimbursed for travel to and from Ottawa. It doesn’t need to be the cheapest or most direct route. Some senators have a two week stopover in Europe and still have the entire airfare reimbursed.
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/senators-choose-costly-plane-trips-over-free-train-162728472.html
Who eats cheese of any temperature with crackers for breakfast? I’m not going to defend the Senator but a little perspective is needed in this thread.
Living on the road under the constraints of an expense account is tough. Sure, Timmies for breakfast is an option for 6 bucks, but who pays for the cab to idle while you wait in line? Subway for lunch puts me over my allowance, as do most dinner entrees in chain restaurants – before I have a coffee, tea or tomato juice to drink. I try to stay in hotels that have continental breakfasts because I prefer just a bit of cereal, milk and a serving of yogurt for breakfast but the free breakfast is buried in the cost of the hotel. Is my hotel choice poorly made because there is a motel for 10 bucks cheaper but 20 dollars further from the airport?
If the Senator’s expense was found to be made falsely in lieu of actually eating a meal (and that mindset does exist…entitled to entitlements after all) then that deserves attention. If someone ate breakfast before getting into the back of an airplane because they didn’t care to eat airline junk (I’ve ate enough of it to know it’s junk) then that’s another.
Abolish the Senate for the right reasons, not the low hanging fruit. A better argument is needed, not this dogpile.
Mulcair was proud as a peacock slammin’Progressive lesbian Ruth Nancy’s Camenbert comment.
When it came to his own Progressive shenanigans-not so much.
