Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Why does everybody keep apologizing? What happened to people’s pride and principles?
If shoplifting is grand and inventory control is obscene, then the next logical step is to disband police, Mi6, and the military.
And no more taxes, since collecting them is obscene as well under the same standard. Oops!
Actually the next logical step would be to abandon the shops. Of course this would end the shoplifting but chalk that up as an unintended consequence.
I’m shocked!

Shoplifting is simply freelance socialism so of course it’s progressive.
My gender is Old Fart and my pronouns are grump and grumpy.

A couple of years ago, I was told by a security guard who had worked at local branches of two the biggest names in Canadian retail. Both had adopted policies of no longer allowing security guards to apprehend shoplifters and hold them for the police. They seemed more afraid of some bystander video of this being placed on social media, from which they’d be criticized.
Other security guards have told me of the thousands of dollars of merchandise that would be stolen some days, even before this policy was introduced. To compensate for the money lost through ongoing high levels of theft, many stores are trying to get shoppers to bag and scan, to do the work of the store’s check-out clerk for free ! Or it’s really a personality test to see who suffers from low esteem.
Besides becoming a less pleasant place to shop, stores that allow such rates of criminal activity, actually make their property a more dangerous place for their customers and their staff. Appeasement for bad behaviour only begets bolder criminals, crime overlords.
If retailer management figures the business is too big to fail. That there is no need look after the integrity of their business, their customers and the large amounts of operating capital required to stay in business. Well, make sure you include that on your resume´when trying to find future employment.
As for the CEO/CFO types, for capitalism and the free enterprise system to function and thrive. “Taking care of business” requires paying attention to the fundamentals. Playing surrender monkey has not worked so well for the oil/natural gas industry in Canada, but they can and do change their name and shift present and future capital investment outside the economy. It’s not the same for retail.
If Jeff Bezos/Amazon end up the only retailer remaining here, China’s CCP will make him a buyout offer. One he can’t afford to refuse.
If the Executive Suite acts to a 3rd world standard, eventually the entire economy and government adopt the same low standards of expectation. And no, don’t ask what would SNC-Lavalin do in this situation, don’t go there.
The ” C Suite” is taking care of business: They get their large salaries, bonuses and entitlements. That is their business.
The fact that the consumer or customer is paying a premium of 5-10% to cover soft loses is not their problem. Besides, jury awards will hurt the bottom line (or insurance costs for covering lawsuits).
Not like the “C Suite” is ever in the store or facing customers.
Theft, the true ‘self-service’.
