Actually, Vietnam is a historically unique example. The US military won that war; then the US surrendered for hard to fathom reasons.
Things like that are very few and very far between.
Militarily, US troops were in command of every battlefield they contested; ie they won each fight.
The US won in Vietnam – militarily. Politically, they surrendered, and threw away all the lives given for that military victory.
Cuba was almost a war (it would have been a short one, assuming the USSR stayed out if it, which was not a given).
The invasion was planned and the first wave (Cuban nationalists) engaged. The US got cold feet (politically) and left them to die.
Iraq 1: Won, but for political reasons, stopped short of full invasion and taking Sadam prisoner. Hence the need fro Iraq 2.
In almost every case, the loss was political, not military.
