Relations between Ukraine and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) started in 1995. Ukraine is as of January 2008 a candidate to join the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP). On December 3, 2008 NATO decided it will work out an Annual National Programme of providing assistance to Ukraine to implement reforms required to accede the alliance without referring to MAP. Plans for Ukrainian membership to NATO were shelved by Ukraine following the 2010 Ukrainian presidential election in which Viktor Yanukovych was elected President. President Yanukovych opted to keep Ukraine a non-aligned state.
It’s a wonder that Yanukovych would pull Ukraine off the fast track to joining NATO, eh?

If you could see Ukraine in contrast to the relative success of Poland as an example, you’d appreciate the huge potential given their vast resources that Ukrainians aspire to by being more closely aligned with the EU and the West. Disagree with the EU all you want, but it’s far better that than living under the oligarchs and the mafia. Ukrainians have finally had enough with Yanukovych and pro-Moscow alignment, and Putin knows it. With the West leaderless, his Plan B is to militarily retake portions with least resistance; better that than nothing.

Let’s be honest here, Russia taking Crimea back isn’t shocking especially considering it was Russian territory for a few hundred years. Kruschev “gave” Ukraine Crimea in a meaningless gift, one that has bitten the Russians in the ass after the break-up of the USSR. Crimea is mostly Russian and of huge strategic importance to Russia. Frankly, if Ukraine loses Crimea and some Eastern border cities but gains real independence from Russia it is a small price to pay.
And on that note, would Canada let Quebec keep its entirety if they ever separated from Canada or would we look to reclaim that portion that used to be part of the North West Territories? And would we stand by if the Quebecois tried to oppress the anglo minority? Well, yeah, we already have, but I hope you get my point.

If Russia occupies Ukraine, NATO member Turkey could deny Russian warships transit privileges between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. What good is a Crimean naval base if the Black Sea is all it can access? As well, it would be a test of the Turkish government to see if they would act against Russia. Who needs fair weather friends?
