“By the long shot this is the most ice we’ve had on Lake Superior in 20 years,” said Jay Austin, Associate Professor at the Large Lakes Observatory in Duluth, Minnesota.
During a typical winter, 30 to 40 percent of the Great Lakes are covered by ice, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson. But this winter, 80 to 90 percent are covered in ice.
That ice coverage, specifically on Lake Superior, is raising concerns.
“With all of this ice, all the sunlight that hits the surface of the lake is going to get bounced back out into space, so it’s going to take longer to get warmer this spring and summer,” Austin said. “The lake is going to just start warming this year when it will start cooling off for next year.”

The link makes mention of the albedo effect of so much ice cover. As the coverage of reflective white ice increases, so does the amount of solar heat that gets bounced back out into space, and the longer it takes for the lakes to thaw. That’s why the glacial maxima tend to last as long as they do. Remember we are still in an Ice Age; we just happen to be in an interglacial period, and that interglacial period has about run its expected course. In other words, a new glacial advance is imminent, at least on the geological time scale.
We may yet find it necessary to strew powdered coal or carbon black on frozen lakes to hasten Spring breakup, and avert another glacial advance, which would be truly catastrophic for our civilization, as opposed to a few degrees of warming.
They need more ice fishing shacks to protect and heat the ice.
We need an Ice Fishing shack tax on all Californian’s NOW to promote the ice melt on the Great Lakes!

Ok, my theory (and it’s as good as any Client Scientist out there) is that the sun energy reflected off the ice and back into space actually makes a bank shot off a polar vortex and then ends up heating the C02 over Lake Michigan and Lake Ontario thus leaving them largely unfrozen.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Mann am I good!

It’s not clear, but if statistics means anything, it means the estimation of the whole from partial information [and rules for validity in that process] And that process is described in scientific papers.
