Tax Cut Revolt

CBC viewers respond to the Goodale Carrot dangled yesterday;

“Dear Mr. Martin and Mr. Goodale! I must say as a member of the middle class (or so I’m told ) that for a measly 2% income tax, one percent of which won’t take effect until 2010, let me turn my other cheek so that you can slap it as well.”

And they’re just warming up.

And about that surplus – “Either” 13.4 “Or” 8.2 – the media seems confused.

Federal unions representing more than 300,000 public servants are in court today for their unprecedented lawsuit against the government to repay the $30 billion it siphoned from workers’ pension plans to pay down the deficit.
The trial, which is expected to last up to four weeks, will open with wrangling over the relevancy of the piles of internal documents the unions want tabled as evidence. The motion over how nearly 100 documents will be used as evidence could take several days to argue. The rest of the trial is expected to be put off until the spring.
The dispute, which goes back to the days of then-finance minister Paul Martin’s drive to wipe out the deficit, is already being billed as a landmark case that could be one of the most significant in Canadian history.
It’s the biggest lawsuit the government has faced from its own workers, rivalled only by the historic pay equity case six years ago that cost taxpayers $3.6 billion, largely in back pay to thousands of the government’s lowest-paid female workers.
The trial will shine the spotlight on the behind-the-scene machinations and negotiations of senior officials at Treasury Board and the powerful Finance Department who were at loggerheads over just who owned the exploding pension surplus — the government, its employees or both. The law governing the workers’ pension plan is silent on who owns any surplus.
Documents indicated that despite objections of Treasury Board, the government argued the money belonged to the taxpayers and it passed legislation in October 1999 that allowed the government to claim the surplus, which was used to offset the deficit.
“We are trying to reinstate the $30 billion the government confiscated. They took it, they grabbed the money and it went to government coffers and what they ultimately used it for is a big question mark,” said Jose Aggrey, president of Canadian Association of Professional Employees. >>>

  2. And those are CBC viewers. Yikes.
Something the polls aren’t guaging and that is depth of support. There are a lot of angry fiscal conservatives out there willing to walk through five feet of snow to vote the Libs out.
The average Lib voter right now will have to hold their nose to vote for their party in the best of conditions. Do you think they will make an effort to get out of their comfy couches in those snazy coffee shops and put down thier lattes when its so cold on their little tootsies?

  3. I am shocked that the CBC website would allow such abuse against their beloved liberals! Hey, submitted my own comment but it will likely not be posted, they will be trolling for some positive stuff now.
Dr. Wright, I really believe that Ontario is starting to come around but with the media and biased polls it’s not getting out. I think that this is on purpose to frighten the opposition from calling an election but they don’t believe this crap either. Harper must get who and what the Conservatives really are out there and dispel so many of the lies. He had better hone his speaking and debating skills sharper yet, this will likely make or sink him.
I have no doubt that a Conservative voter would vote no matter what the conditions and that the liberals are the lazy bunch. Keep our fingers crossed for bitter cold on voting day right across the country, that would make it an even colder day for the liberals the next morning.

  4. Who cares what the polls say – from reading the letters on, of all things, the CBC site, I’d say the Liberals are in a lot of trouble.

  5. In regards to the liberals bribing canadians with billions in tax breaks..
Six months ago Finance Minister Goodale said we would have a 500 million surplus,
now all of a sudden he has 13 billion !!!
    The numbers don’t add up…
I’ll say it again….we need someone other than a liberal to have a good hard look at the books !!!!!!!!A.S.A.P
This lot of Liberal theives in Ottawa
    has got to go….

  6. In the book by Adrian Woolridge and John Micklethwait, The Witchdoctors: Making Sense of the Management Gurus, the 2 Economist newsweekly editors quote a famous dictum, then rife within corporate America as the downsizing buzzsaw wound to full intensity under the watchful eye of corporate sophists (management consultants):
BOHCA – Bend Over Here (it) Comes Again.
    They said, not me.

  7. BOHCA indeed! In Canader you have to provide your own KY and pay GST on it too.
I’m looking forward to this election to see how gullable and fickle the Canadian voter still is.

  8. Can somebody please explain to how someone can not like tax cuts? Calgary Grit says he dosn’t like them and people that responded to his post tended to agree.
The Liberal’s have of course long since blown any credibility so anything they put forward is immediately suspect.
Having said that if your living paycheck to paycheck and can get to keep more of it how is that bad.
    Exasperated.

  9. I had a long online chat with an Ontario teacher last night. They were shocked to learn of the relationships between the Liberals and the CBC. They were shocked to learn of the relationships between the print media and the Liberals. They were shocked to learn of the relationships betweent the Liberals and the management at the UN that allowed Oil for Food to take place. They were shocked that there was even a suggestion that Gomery was being handled. How do I learn more, they asked. Right here at SDA I said. A great place to start. And tell all your teacher friends, and your family members. Tell them how the Liberals said they were going to ignore a non-confidence vote. And the finale, was laying out why PQ will likely proceed and succeed with a referendum because the Liberals used our money to rig their last attempt.
We must get as many people to the blogs as we can. I am evangelizing the blogosphere as much as possible. In my view, it’s the country’s only hope.

  10. Does anyone here know if the companies listed below have any political/financial contacts with the Liberal party? Seems to me like way too much money to spend on a computer system to run what should have been a simple database. So where did the money go?
With a known $2 Billion spent on the duck-gun registry, it has the potential to make Ad$cam look like pocket change.

    NEWS RELEASE
November 15, 2005 For Immediate Release
$527 MILLION WASTED ON GUN REGISTRY COMPUTER CONTRACTS
Will it take the Auditor General or a Gomery to find out why it cost so much?
Ottawa Today, Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville and Conservative Firearms Critic, released a 14-page document listing more than $527 million in computer contracts issued by the Canada Firearms Centre since 1997. The 133 contracts and contract amendments were issued to five companies. How can the gun registry computer systems possibly cost more than half a billion dollars? asked Breitkreuz. The size of these numbers never ceases to amaze me. After all, it cost only $8 million to register 40 million cows and that registry actually works.
The documents (see link below) obtained through an Access to Information Act request show the following:
SHL & EDS Systemhouse: 13 contracts totaling
EDS Canada Inc: 62 contracts totaling
BDP Business Data Services: 20 contracts totaling
CGI Information Systems: 29 contracts totaling
TEAM CENTRA (CGI & BDP): 5 contracts totaling
    $ 39.2 MILLION
    $150.5 MILLION
    $ 17.4 MILLION
    $ 2.0 MILLION
    $318.2 MILLION
This isnt all the computer contracts, but these are the biggest players in the gun registration scheme, said Breitkreuz. Major sub-contractors on the project include Bell, NexInnovations, Aliant, and Compaq, but we dont know the total value of their contracts yet.
This has the potential to be an even bigger scandal than Adscam. We hope the Auditor General will answer many of our fiscal questions when she tables the financial update of the firearms fiasco in February. Failing that, Im afraid its going to take another public enquiry to get to the bottom of this mess, concluded Breitkreuz.

  11. Jim:
Much as I’d like to see the Liebrals punted asap, this AG report coming out in the middle of a Feb. election campaign would be fine with me. And yes, I’d be really interested to see how our money was disbursed throughout these companies.

  12. Can anyone out there provide me with a starting point for research on possible connections between Bell & the Liberal Crime Family, or Ernscliffe? I’ve seen something similar implied on this site before, but would like to know a bit more.
Kate – I love your blog. It’s too bad you can’t hijack the internet and make it every Canadian’s home page somehow.
p.s. – I’m sending this from work & the email is invalid, but I’m not a Liberal plant.

  13. Mad mike:
    Hate to burst your bubble.
If Parliament isn’t sitting the AG cannot table her report, election or not.

  14. Oops, consider my bubble well and truly burst. Sigh. Maybe we can wish for a premature “leak” from an outraged citizen.

  15. Also Mad Mike, the election campaign length can be manipulated at will by Dithers. There’s no way he’d let that report come out at such an inopportune time.
Ah yes, bribery, blackmail and corruption from the Mafia-bastard Liebral thieves! How low can this pack of sleeze-buckets sink in their desperation to control and steal our money??

  16. How much is the surplus?
However much you want it to be.
Lean Left do you? Well lemme tella about our 4.6 Billion dollar NDP budget.
Lean right you say? Well we believe in tax cuts don’t you know.
In favor of public health care? Well don’t vote for those crazy conservatives they want to privatize.
In favor of private health care? Well did you hear we (the Quebec wing of the Liberal party) just resolved to have private insurance for health?
We’re the Liberal party, everything you want us to be!

  17. With this kind of intricate financial analysis (see article link below) and all kinds of catch phrases like the mini-budget will “fatten your wallet immediately (!)” it’s almost as if the Globe and Mail receive advanced copy of the budget to get the propaganda machine nicely lubed up as fast as humanly possible… friggin “liberal” thought-control media… I wish they would at least PRETEND to not be such blood-sucking leeches http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/

  18. Another reason for extra Liberal surplus

A lot of wondering or confusion going on about where all this extra surplus in Ralph Goodale’s budget came from. Could be an easy answer to that, just find stories like this:
Public service unions began a court battle on Tuesday to force the f…

  19. A serendipitous figure; $30,000,000,000 CAD hooted by the Librano$ as a tax cut is the same $30,000,000,000 CAD looted from the civil servants’ pension plans by the Librano$; all taken by Chretien to pay Martin. It’s All In The Familia. Money-laundering by the Librano$ on a massive scale unforeseen in Canada or any other country. Staggering. Canada bought and sold for a mess of pottage by the Liberal Party of Canada.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
OTTAWA – The $30-billion tax cut and spending spree package has an expected shelf life of just seven more days. That makes it almost dead on political arrival, so don’t spend your promised tax refund just yet. (National Post) >>>

  20. Well, PMPM and the Lie-beral’s have given the Trudeau salute to the miidle class once again. The Auditor General’s report on the Gun Registry just might find it’s way to daylight, in spite of The Librano’s efforts, before election day.

  21. The Liberals have no problem lying (sorry, repackaging) to us about themselves and the opposition. This party does nothing unless their political survival is in question. It makes me wonder what skeletons they don’t want to come out of their closets. The Liberals represent the political arm of the Canadian establishment, that drains us of our money, our resolve and ultimately, of our will for change. It will take an extraordinary act to change this. They have the nerve to talk about majority rules – last time I looked at least 60% of those who voted went for another party. Let them have their post-Christmas election and their minority. Who cares. The opposition must get together, coalition or otherwise, defeat them on confidence; then tell GG they have confidence of House, then govern!! Otherwise one-quarter of voters will decide who runs this country, from top to bottom. There is an old saying that in the USA, on election day, everyone from President to dog catcher is elected. Canada is the same, except the PM decides everything. We must end this de-facto dictatorship. Canadians, including Messrs Harper, Layton and Duceppe, must act with courage. Our long-term survival as a nation demands nothing less.

  22. Posted a comment on CBC website but I know it wont see the light of day. As we approach the comming election can I remind western voters that “For evil to succeed, it only requires that Good men do nothing.” If you truly value this country and your future in it get out and support, financially and physically, the party of your choice. The Liberals have stolen the right to govern this country, WE allowed it to happen, WE failed to “Take up the Torch”, WE must take it back and never allow it to happen again.

  23. If hardcore liberals are questioning their master – wow. This is not the liberals to win but the conservatives to lose. I’ve been saying this till I’m blue in the face. For the conservatives to win there must be something to vote for not just against. They should have pulled a Mike Harris and put forth a blue book a year ago, then hammer five simple points. Harris’s points were simple and easy to understand and he never wavered from them. That got him respect and in the upcoming election it would doubly be apparant when measured against Liberal flipflopping. His two majorities disprove that Ontario would automatically go against a conservative platform. To wait this long and then put out policies bit by bit only fuels the charge of a hidden agenda. Putting out a policy during a short election is not long enough for the electorate to properly take it in. After a year of debating Harris’s blue book the electorate finally came to understand it and not fear it for there was time to counter the criticisms. What is Harper waiting for ????

  24. I’ve read their website too and reams of other material. But voters wont’t – they must be spoonfed. Liberals have handed Harper all he needs with their “economic statement.” Remember when their economic platform in 04 election was called unrealistic (even though we know now it was accurate)? Well they have the numbers, unless Libs can convince voters their numbers are lies only when Conservatives use them. BTW I love the quotes from Martin v.v Iraq War. Kate, can you confirm if North Bay Nugget quote of 30 Apr 03 is accurate – “I really think Canada should get over to Iraq as quickly as possible.”

  25. People with intelligence, common sense and decency know the Liberal pigs must die!!
then we roast and eat them women and children first.

  28. Its nice to know that our government can still afford to provide its retired employees with a defined benefit pension plan while there’s been significant growth in the private sector which provide defined contribution pension plans and RRSP plans or only RRSP plans because of the ever increasing payout costs associated with a traditional defined benefit pension plan.
Unlike defined contribution plans where the plans are dependent on the employees ability to save & and bear some of the investment risk, government employees are still guaranteed a nice secure retirement income with cost of living adjustments and of course without any investment risk to them.
Yeah, its nice to know how hard the unions are now working to get back that $30 billion, paid by taxpayers in the first place and who can now look forward to paying more for lawyers.
So what ever happened to that phasing out of their current pension plan to a pension plan that might more resemble one that the majority of Canadian taxpayers are covered under?

  29. “If you truly value this country and your future in it get out and support, financially and physically, the party of your choice”
Antenor, I no longer value Canada. I mourn Canada, dead these last 37 years. And yes, I got out. I might return one day, to a Republic of Alberta.

  30. LC, telling the electorate to go to the conservative website is not an answer. The average voter will not go. After Harris brought out his blue book ( a year before the election )he went on every radio talk show that would take him and constantly pounded his 5 simple points. By engaging the public directly he could confront any criticisms head on. Its hard to counter the leftwing media criticisms so go around them directly to the public. I have yet to hear Harper on any talk show. If they came up with a plan of ethics why not commercials explaining the plan ? The conservative platform must be brought to the public, presented and then constantly represented until the electorate begins to understand it otherwise the conservatives will lose.
