  6. Conservatives give more to charity than liberals do. This topic has come up before, but I appreciated this Washington Post article’s theory that liberals think “political” activity for their pet causes makes up for actual (e.g.: Salvation-Army-actual) work on behalf of the underprivileged.

  13. As the hot political potato of Obama and his 20 some year relationship with the Rev. Wright continues to steam along I read this morning that Obama will be on that tabloid type tv program “The View” today. It is being reported that he will state on that program that -had the Rev Wright not retired and admitted that some of his statements had deeply offended people and were inappropriate blah blah blah…. I would have left that church.
    The Rev Wright retired long before this issue was ever brought up in the campaign. Sorry Mr Obama but this just doesn’t pass the BS test. If that is the case then why did you invite the Rev to join your campaign as an advisor? No – I’m not buying what you’re selling. I know bullsh_t when I hear it and this is bullsh_t at its best.

  14. Brad Wall has done it again. First he brings down a budget that gives large tax breaks to farmers on the EDUCATION taxes on land. Even with commodity prices such as wheat being the highest price we have ever seen. He then canceled money earmarked for St Mary’s school in Saskatoon. Lastly he canceled the Government commitment of 8 million for an inner city library-medical clinic-dental clinic. All along the good people of Saskatoon continue to pay the highest EDUCATION TAXES in the Country. Brad Wall knows that the DEPARTMENT of EDUCATION funds students here in Saskatoon with less money than they fund Regina Students. We here in Saskatoon are GETTING RIPPED OFF by his government. I volunteered my time to help Brad and his government get elected and this is the payback. No thanks. Brad Wall will be a one term man if he keeps this up.

  20. DJ – Brad is doing the prudent fiscal management thing. Build the infrastructure so we can sustain the growth. More people working in more new business means more new tax revenue which means more money for the very things you want. Realocate now rather than lose out later. we never had that with the former elitist government we had for the last 14 years. They squandered years of development for nothing productive in return. The former government increased my education tax by 35% when they amalgomated the rural school divisions and then cut services and programs to boot. Where did the extra money go?

  22. I think it is important that we are seeing more and more of a critical reaction to Islam and Islamism from the West than ever before.
    Each time, it will be met with rage and anger, death threats and actual violence, deaths and attempts of repression within the Islamic community, but, that rage and anger is lessening as the West continues its criticism and refusal to submit.
    We’ve seen the pol8itical cartoons and their aftermath of violence, Theo Van Gogh’s murder, other violence, but, as the criticism – in films, in political cartoons, in verbal analysis, continues, Islam is starting to realize that it can’t operate in a self-defined cocoon. Other people exist; and other people think differently.
    It’s important to keep it up. Now, what is happening, is two things. The political infrastructure of Islam, which is tribalism, is starting to crack; what we are now seeing more and more, is internal tribal warfare for control. The population is too large for this, and tribalism will collapse.
    But, the West has to keep insisting on democracy, the rule of law, and human rights – or, those nations can’t participate in the global economy.
    Next, because the West is confronting and questioning the basic axioms of Islam – an astonishing experience for a Muslim who would never do that in his own life – we are seeing that Muslims are also questioning and confronting their basic axioms. That’s a first time experience, and it will increase.
    The focal points are – democracy in the ME, and above all, rejecting multicultural relativism in the West. Islamic axioms must be opened, questioned, debated, by the Muslims in the West. Otherwise, the West runs the danger of establishing isolated sects of fundamentalist Islam in the West, vicious and violent because they are decontextualized and not subject to ‘cooling’ by local realities. The West has to keep questioning, rejecting cultural relativism, insisting on ‘no special treatment’, on integration, on the rule of law, on equality..etc.

    Cons and independents (like me) call politicians on their lies and bull, and the soothing balm of lines like: ‘hey, calm down, show patience, it’ll come’, or ‘look, they’re just setting the stage for when they can really do their thing’.
    That’s straight-out bull.
    Whether the fact that federal spending is up 17% over 3 Con budgets, or that $19 billion a year in tax dollars are still being shoveled out in corporate welfare ever year, the fact is the Cons are governing very much like Libranos. It’s one reason why the Libs aren’t hitting the red-button. And that’s why the Cons are called on it.
    Belittling supporters whose general understanding has been betrayed is good for those foot dragging civil servants who punch the clock (and the clown) on our dime, wasting years and marking time to a fully indexed pension. All without need for results, only absolute devotion to and enamour for, process.
    Yup. Be patient man. And enjoy cutting cheques to the butt-dragging politico sophists. Better yet, cut a cheque to the party, or maybe host a fundraiser for them.
    You’ll get a warm thanks, and some of the same lines you just fed above.

    As for your comments about the dental/medical clinic/grocery store/housing project in Saskatoon? While I’m sure that it is good optics to commit some money to building something like that, I would point out that it doesn’t make sense for the government to build dental or medical clinics when some hospitals don’t have enough money to stay open 24/7.

    I can get the dancer to reverse its anti-clockwise motion (to me) and apparently move clockwise by focusing on the foot where it meets the ground and imagining that the motion is clockwise and it changes for a bit.

  34. On that “Right Brain, Left Brain” thing I saw the dancer going both directions. It actually changed direction at times. It started out clockwise and then went anti-clockwise. Does that mean I use my whole brain? Many who know me would disagree with that conclusion. Maybe its just the Aussies messing with both sides of our brains.

    The UN Human Rights Council adopted Thursday the resolution — proposed by Islamic countries — on a 21-10 vote over the opposition of Europe and Canada.

    But the Saudi delegation told the council ‘ it is regrettable that there are false translations and interpretations of the freedom of expression.’

    Thanks for the idea, I think I’ll call it Reform 2. And honestly, it’ll come. It is an inevitability, given the lack of response to a sincere, and stongly held ideology of smaller government, personal responsibility, and freedom.
    Politicians are sleaze. Period.
    The only exception I take to your comment is that of being a ‘reactionary’. I understand myself to be consistent, holding political and theophilosophical beliefs that are ‘supported’ by those who espouse them to get elected, and do little when in office.
    If they can’t be honest about their limits up front, the politicians are no better than a used car salesman, or a lightweight who has more ambition than talent – and thus runs to politics.
    That is why I am critical of the political process, of politicians, and the apologists who help negotiate their role down for them.

    As are disaffected conservatives who lament use of targeted tax reduction (versus broad base reform), 800+ patronage appointments in 3 years, a lack of implementing Gomery recommendations, untendered sole source contracts from Finance, un-elected party bagmen appointed to the Senate, Accountability Act gaps left intentionally, and now $480 million in taxpayer cash shovelled out to a private firm – along with some shiny satellites.
    I’ll just sit here and be petulant, for I actually believed that the Cons had a plan for something other than creating a communications plan.
    All hail status quo man. You got your wish.
