my career path was very different, one of a most rare breed.
mainframe computer operator.
given those babies cost millions, well, not a lot of them around.
it took a knack, finesse and instinct. all of which l had and came out quick enough.
l did tricks no one else even thought of, we bought a 4-up memory module from Queens U when they upgraded. there was a ‘parity check in those days.
if the parity error occurred in the 4 up module the whole thing was switched off and the reboot done.
but later l realized, what if the specific single module could be isolated?
ok, *electronically* ie manually switch the 4 up module back on, then,
go to the console, and *logically* ie via ‘software’ switch the 3 remaining good modules back on!! yeee haa!!! we’se now got another 300K main memory thanks to kritter’s system smarts !!! the caveat however, IF a reboot was then still necessary, the procedure had to be repeated until the engineer gave the ‘all clear’ on the initial hardware error.

see what l mean? there were only hundreds of us in the entire province and l was one of them. now? pffft, 100s in the same city on the same leftist bandwagon. go ahead LOSERS.
