That Sinking Feeling

The bad news just keeps popping up for the Canadian economy.

General Motors Co. on Friday will eliminate the third shift at its assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont., cutting about 700 jobs inside the plant, plus another 300 to 500 workers at parts companies that supply the facility, according to Unifor, the labour union representing the workers.

Update: Those workers can just transition to building Korean EV batteries, apparently. An “agreement” has been reached.

It says the the countries plan to co-operate on advancing a Korean automotive industrial footprint in Canada and to create domestic electric vehicle manufacturing opportunities.

  1. Stop fretting. Former Canadian politician Brad Wall has his elbows out for another 3 years at least … waiting out Trump! Those jobs will all come back after the BadOrangeMan is gone.

    1. LOL!

I was going to say. If you wanted a useful perspective on Carney’s speech, look no further.

    2. it was bad enough when Wall’s personality cult just attracted boomers & progressive centrists. Now that he is cosplaying as a cowboy while his son has become a country music star, he has become even more insufferable

For the record I love everything about Colter, not throwing any shade his direction.

        1. Yeah, Kenji.
I love young, old soul, Colter,
A good Swift Current boy, who is a true cowboy poet, and even a real cow puncher.
A few years ago, Rogan invited Colter to his show, but Colter declined, because he was too busy rounding up the cattle.
Colter also has a fine line in one of his cowboy songs…
“Go about your earthly mission, and don’t trust no politician.”
I wonder how his dad, Brad, felt hearing that.
I ramble. Get some Colter tunes!

  2. Just spoke to someone in Oshawa that supposedly knows the real story. It’s toast, GM is moving it all out in phases. The locals are in talks to bring in a company that builds military vehicles but that would be years away.

    1. Maybe the day after Uncle Sam bombs their tank factories disguised as sparky car factories to the ground.

But by then there won’t be a Canada anyway.

  3. This must be part of Melanie Joli’s auto ‘strategy’ that Doug Ford was lauding the other day.

      1. Perhaps he just needs to pick up a crack habit…though he’d never rock an Adidas tracksuit to Queen’s Park.

  4. They’re going to hold on to the green scam right to the bottom.
At least Trump calls it what it is, antics or not .
Carney , Ford , and so many others are just going thru the motions . After all they had years to build a stronger country instead they tore it down.
And don’t want to take responsibility for it.
Those are the antics that pi– me off.
    Wastes of skin.
    To put it nicely .
Bet Carney and Ford would let China bail them out .
How long has it been and Carney hasn’t done a damn thing, why? To busy fighting Trump because he doesn’t play along with the usual globalist trough feeders that like people that don’t mind being in a herd.

  5. It makes sense now: Canada makes EV’s while the US is saddled with an obsolete industry.

    1. But of course! And now you won’t need your Canadian oil anymore because you will drive green-mobiles!
…so you can sell all of your heavy sour to China, which is what they need to make the bunker oil for their blue water navy.
Win-Win-Win for Canada! You guys are so very clever.

      1. u j, do you realize your sarcasm COULD BE accurate some day?
because l certainly think so given the LIEberals are busy ‘boxing us in’ regarding trade partners

          1. Steve, what makes you think we want to solve the west coast port/pipeline build out at this time (I’m guessing that you are speaking of the intended one that goes through Washington)?

If it’s about the BC one, well, that’s Canada’s business.

          2. Steve- don’t forget that the Global Warming Climate Catastrophe folks insist that the arctic is already ice-free in their models, so just have a stream of barges heading north on the MacKenzie River. What could possibly go wrong, it’s based on (pseudo) science!

    2. LOL……. I hate to say this and give the dumb f—s any ideas but they could employer half the country redoing the grid.

  6. meanwhile tranna sun headline has carnage leading in the polls and poilievre has his work cut out
do they only poll peepull who dont need to work?

  7. Things aren’t getting any better. Unless there is a valid reason other than Bombardier is a Lieberal pet project, this will get Carnage’s attention.

  8. Again, these are real people facing a very uncertain future.
All of these other countries can get a trade deal done. Maybe not textbook perfect like some expect, but its a deal. Now many innocent people are scared of what a future holds. A future that the Greatest Economist Ever (TM) couldn’t give two figs about because everyone was slapping him on the back at the cocktail party in Davos.

I am sure they will take great comfort in knowing that Jacques the Quebec dairy farmer is enjoying his 6 months in Florida at his luxury condominium.

    1. That’s something quite a few are well aware of. As I stated in a previous thread, I don’t begrudge the Canadian people freedom to live with a modicum of security, prosperity, and, well, freedom. I would even applaud it, as everyone should have at least a shot at those things. Nothing is ever textbook perfect, and nobody gets everything they want, but perhaps we could both settle on what we both need (and therein lies the problem: there are those who don’t care about what the people need, as they don’t see them as people, just numbers).

But my people have to come first and foremost, and my country has been hollowed out by the very people who are hollowing out yours — so of course I want to see them challenged at the very least. And if your people want to protect the ravagers, well, it is what it is.
Funny that, someone such as myself who is willing to absolutely, cold-heartedly destroy you (not wanting to, but willing, there IS a difference!) for the sake of my own appears to take the lives of your ordinary people into more consideration than your ‘patriots’. A grand irony, truly.
