Nothing says destruction of capital like pumping carbon dioxide 400 kilometers and then forcing it into the earth.
“Alberta specifically is a really great confluence of all the right factors coming together to give Canada a chance to lead in this ecosystem,” said Cameron Halliday, co-founder of Cambridge, Mass.-based Mantel Capture.
Mantel is not disclosing the cost of the project at this time. It is receiving support from Alberta Innovates, a provincial Crown corporation.

Maybe at least get some added value out of this idiotic scheme by using the byproduct in the manufacturing of fizzy drinks.
Or supplying greenhouses, that grow food we usually cannot up here/this time of year..
Serious question, can you actually burn the methane in from the oil sands to heat a greenhouse and then use the CO2 produced as extra plant food? I know that in Ontario greenhouse operators will burn natural gas to heat their buildings and blow the CO2 into the houses as extra plant food. COuld a similar system be developed for Alberta?
Natural gas is between 85% and 95% methane, so yes but I think it’s much more economical to burn the nat gas in the greenhouse to generate CO2 than to transport CO2 only from the oil sands. And I’m not certain that’s what you’re asking.
Here’s a decent generator unit:
https://www.vevor.ca/co2-generator-c_10210/vevor-co2-burner
It’s covered in the CSA B149 Gas Code book at 7.3.3 but really the major concern is a maximum of 5000ppm CO2 and 35ppm CO at start-up.
Big Marble Greenhouse (72 acres under glass) in Medicine Hat AB uses hydronic heating, and I don’t know if they use CO2 generators but I hope so.
They grow a quality product for about 11 months a year.
They have heating units run off natgas or propane to generate both the heat, and the extra CO2, and yet the government wasn’t giving them any credits for the use of the CO2 in the greenhouse. There is no point using the C02 only, if you also need to heat them.
How long until we are all working in 7 Elevens in China? Death Wish VI The Dominion of Canada.
You wish. The 7-11 will be staffed by a touch screen kiosk.
With a slight East-Indian accent.
Biggest scam going. I actually have more respect for people who are triple-masked than I do for people engaged in this retarded endeavor.
You see a tiny sliver of hope that Premier Smith “gets it”, then you see taxpayers being forced to waste money on this quite possibly stupidest thing in the history of stupid. Then your return to you quite correct that this shithole is finished, and hope it ends sooner rather than later.
She seems to “get it” but has she been “got to”?
I remember when she had her radio talk show, she was all into the windmills and solar panels schtick, has she really learned about the reality, done any introspection and private research, not aligned with the governmental order?
I have my doubts, but still better than Knothead Nensharia and the N D Pee would be..
They could give the money to poor people to burn in their fireplaces for heat.
Ecosystem is misspelled.
It is “echosystem” as in echo chamber.
This is Canada’s most critical productive industry being preyed upon by parasitic rent seekers to assuage the pathologies of a globally dwindling cohort of Jacobin climate hysterics while the majority of the planet continually wipes out any potential effects by many orders of magnitude. Green theocracy at its finest. Canada’s forests and cereal crops (excluding Corn) will happily take all the CO2 we can possibly produce, responding with better growth rates.
Governments all rush to subsidize any proposal, no matter how viable or not…or just stupid. If it can’t get funded through the markets, it won’t work. Investment companies are better than governments at evaluating the viability of projects. They ask will it return the capital and governments ask if it will generate votes and virtue. Loan guarantees may dupe the masses, but the cash will get grifted away regardless. These big schemes are just grant proposals.
I recently ran across an article that boasted that some carbon-capture project in AB had captured and pumped some 28,000 tonnes of CO2 underground in the last 25 years. I did some calculations and found that to sequester even one-quarter of the CO2 in the atmosphere above Canada would take thousands of years at that rate. That would, in theory, get the CO2 here down from 400 ppm to around 300.
Whoopee. In thousands of years.
But, of course, the atmosphere does not stay here. It is always moving. The air we breathe today was polluted in China a few days ago, and they are pumping about 30 times as much CO2 into it as we do, and they don’t care. Nothing we can do will make even the tiniest difference. Nothing.
Science and math matter, but it is obvious that politicians are using neither. It’s all ideology that achieves absolutely nothing other than to get rid of an awful lot of taxpayer dollars.
I suspect there is little reason to expect the sequestered CO2 to remain underground.
You wonder why Alberta and not its home state of Massachusetts?
“Mantel is not disclosing the cost of the project at this time. It is receiving support from Alberta Innovates, a provincial Crown corporation.”
Because even Democratic Americans aren’t that f*cking stupid.
The ones in Massachusetts are; but I doubt there’s an easily accessible source of sufficient CO2 to corral, since they don’t drill for oil or gas. A Crown Corporation – so that means the Elbows Up folks are subsidizing a US corporation, oui?
I used to think IDIOCRACY was just a funny movie. Who knew it is reality.
It’s actually a documentary, Wayne
Danielle Smith is a gullible person. She blew up Wild Rose on the eve of a victory based on the word of sleazy Jim Prentice.
She droned on about electric vehicles and crypto on her radio show.
Now she loves Net Zero and carbon sequestration.
Pathetic.
